Issues of race, gender, and ethnicity will always be an ongoing problem in America. “The Other” describes someone or a people group who are alienated from the center of society; he/she/they are on the margins of society. Two readings that relate to the topic of “The Other” are From Vindication of the Rights of Woman by Wollstonecraft and the story “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave”. From Vindication of the Rights of Woman is about gender roles and the story “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave” is about slavery. Both gender and slavery fall in to the category of “The Other”. These two texts are very different. There are two differences between From Vindication of the Rights of Woman and The first difference between From Vindication of the Rights of Woman and the story “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave” is why the people were discriminated against. In From Vindication of the Rights of Woman there was the issue of gender inequality. Gender inequality is unequal rights or treatment because of the gender of a person. In this case gender inequality applies to women. In “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave” there was the issue of slavery. Slavery was a very unnecessary act of punishing African Americans because of their skin color. The second difference between From Vindication of the Rights of Woman and the “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave” is how the people were treated for being “different”. In From Vindication of the Rights of Woman it does not say that women were being physically harmed because they were considered to be inferior to men. It was more of a mental punishment. The writings of Frederick Douglass and Captain Canot both discuss the institution of slavery. However, each piece of writing was written for a different purpose. Frederick Douglass’s writing was written to show how inhumane slavery was, and how wrong it was. Whereas Captain Canot’s writing basically bragged about how “humane” he treated the slaves on his ship. However, both men made some of the same points with similar evidence.
In sum, all of these key arguments exist in “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” because of the institution of slavery and its resulting lack of freedom that was used to defend it. This text’s arguments could all be gathered together under the common element of inequality and how it affected the practical, social, and even spiritual lives of the slaves.

The concept of the Other is dominant in Frederick Douglass’s text “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro”, for it determines the main conflict and illuminates the issue of intolerance and even blasphemy regarding the attitude of white Americans towards Negroes. The text was written as a speech to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and delivered at Rochester’s Corinthian Hall on July 5, 1852. It was a remarkable articulation of the Black people voice living in the United States of America at that point of time because Black people were going through too much humiliation on physical and moral levels (Andrews, 1991, p.46).
Woolf, an author, discusses many of the injustices that she had personally faced due to the fact that she was a woman. In one example, Woolf was walking on the grass in order to get to a place more quickly, as the sidewalk would have taken longer. She was then told to return to the path because only men and scholars were allowed to be on the grass, or turf as she referred to it as. She was then forced to take the sidewalk just because of her gender. Later, she was then forced to exit a university library because you had to be a male attending the college, been in accompaniment with a male who is attending the college, or had a “letter of introduction”.
The Narrative of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass is written to have people place their feet in the shoes of Frederick Douglass and try to understand the experience he went through as a slave. Douglass writes this piece of literature with strong wording to get his point across. He is not trying to point out the unpleasant parts of history, but to make people face the truth. He wants readers to realize that slavery is brutalizing and dehumanizing, that a slave is able to become a man, and that some slaves, like himself, have intellectual ability. These points are commonly presented through the words of Douglass because of his diction.
Both readings are about African American Men who are being discriminated against. Frederick Douglass was born 1817 and died 1895. His story is about his journey as a slave in Maryland. When Douglass was put into slavery, he was with a mistress who had never owned a slave before, so it was all very new to her. Mrs. Hugh Auld helped teach Douglass how to read and write, but her husband found out and told her that she should not, for it was dangerous and unlawful (125). Although Mrs. Hugh Auld stopped teaching Douglass, he knew enough to start his own education and eventually that lead him to freedom. Through all of Douglass?s teachings, he realized that slavery had a negative effect on him. Although his education was obviously good for him, he had his doubts. Before he was naive to all that was going on around him and what he was involved in. The first topic found in these books is the difference in the roles of women and men slaves. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl gives us the women 's point of view, their lifestyle and their slave duties and roles. On the other hand, The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass shows us the male side of slavery; the duties and role of men slaves and their way of living their situation. Both books state clearly the roles of both men and women slaves. We can easily observe the fact that slaves’ roles were based on their gender, and the different duties they had based on these roles. The concept of “otherness” is a common idea throughout the world that describes how majority and minority identities are created. It is the “quality of being different or unusual” (“Otherness”). “Others”, during the early abolitionist period, were those that did not meet the European norm: white, male, and Christian. In conclusion, women were considered property and slave holders treated them as they pleased. We come to understand that there was no law that gave protection to female slaves. Harriet Jacob’s narrative shows the true face of how slaveholders treated young female slave. The female slaves were sexually exploited which damaged them physically and psychologically. Furthermore it details how the slave holder violated the most sacred commandment of nature by corrupting the self respect and virtue of the female slave. Harriet Jacob writes this narrative not to ask for pity or to be sympathized but rather to show the white people to be aware of how female slaves constantly faced sexual exploitation which damaged their body and soul.
In Mary Wollstonecraft’s essay “A Vindication of the Rights of Women” she. constantly compares men and women. Her comparisons range from their physical nature. to their intelligence, and even down to the education that each person receives. Wollstonecraft states, “In the government of the physical world it is observable that the female in point of strength is, in general, inferior to the male.
