The story of Vincent Phelps, who is in his late forties, begins on a day not so different from any other on a foggy and hazy November in the city of New York. He supposed it could have happened anytime to any retired detective. He realize most of his days were smothered in routine; safe, predictable routine that felt so much like a life. In consequence, he disposed to reserve all sentiments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to him. After boasting this way of his endurance, he came to the admission that it has a limit. He wanted no more disruptive excursions with favored glances into the human heart. Of course, a good portion of those days are uneventful and tedious, after he was resigned from the New York Police Department …show more content…
He knew about those rumors. Not to mention that he's the only one who knows about this phenomena for the past four years. "Yes, Mr. Phelps," Detective Byron said. "You might as well call me out. I don't want to hear anymore, Detective Byron. There's too many from new species to top-secret experiments even the Soviets won't dare to try. I guess I'm not in the mood today, if you want to ask me how I feel." “I believe it out of the question, Mr. Phelps! It makes me sick.” the detective cried. “They've been talking about it for four years. There are unexplained rumors about animals of all species having the ability to communicate, even speak plain English. Some species are standing on two legs instead of all fours. They're about the size of human beings like us. Like something out of a B-movie. What is this world coming to? At least answer me truthfully.” "With all due respect, Detective Byron," Vincent Phelps said. "I'm exceedingly confident in the capabilities of these rumors." Detective Byron’s shoulders visibly sag, he lets out a long frustrated breath. "Sometimes this phenomena can be spectacularly surreal," Detective Byron said. "I would never suggest that this would take long to find out about it. So many theories! So many stories! It has to end sooner or

At the beginning of the story, the Narrator has been playing Detective in a city of his imagining for years. Unlike the real town he lives in, the Narrator’s city is a sprawling metropolis, where everyone in his real life has a secret role. His parents, for example, “...were well-meaning but unimaginative people, and I was polite to them”, and his brother, Mark, “...was the district attorney, my nemesis” (p. 52). These roles have significance, in

Every few years, Hollywood releases a new Planet of the Ape movie, which is always a blockbuster hit. Moviegoers flock to see these movies of how apes rise together and how they are actually more intelligent than meets the eye. Most people do not know the premise behind these movies of how smart and closely related apes are to humans. This is because people probably have never taken a physical anthropology class and have not done research on apes –our closet kins. Known for his immense studies in the fields of apes and monkeys, his long term research in the behavior of chimpanzees and mountain gorillas, and his experience in the forests with the apes, the co-director of the Jane Goodall Research Center and writer of our textbook, primatologist

Language is commonly held to be the province of humans, but other inhabitants of earth possess their own forms of communication. Birds, dolphins, and whales are some of those that have a language. Primates also use vocal communication with each other. Their utterances have varied uses and volumes, with each primate’s voice being distinct just as human voices are. These unique calls have given researchers insight into the social workings of primate groups. The very fact that primates have a language offers insight into the evolution of language and calls into question what the term human truly means.
Mysteries have always held great fascination for the human mind, not least because of the aura that surrounds them and the realm of the Unknown into which they delve. Coupled with the human propensity of being particularly curious about aspects which elude the average mind, the layer of intrigue that glosses over such puzzles makes for a heady combination of the literary and the popular. In the canon of detective fiction worldwide, no detective has tickled the curious reader’s imagination and held it in thrall as much as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. The 221-B, Baker Street, London ‘amateur’ detective combines a rare blend of intellectual prowess and sharp wit to crack a series of baffling riddles.

Sidney Blackpool was mentioned to be a top-notch detective and certainly the man for the job. Victor offers Blackpool a two-week, luxury vacation, and is free to do investigating as he pleases.
