Greek organizations are debatably the most undervalued and misconceived aspect of college campuses. Most people don’t see the benefits that fraternities and sororities bring to college campuses and their communities. Some see these organizations as large beneficial clubs and others see them as potential problems. Many of the allegations put forth by individuals that discredit the benefits and good deeds done by Greek organizations are weak justifications for their removal from college campuses. Greek organizations provide campus communities with academically responsible students, philanthropic activities and increase community involvement.
The state that was chosen for this project is Delaware. Delaware is a small state located in the Mid-Atlantic. Delaware is usually referred to as the first state, because it was the first state to sign the constitution. Delaware can also be called the Blue Hen State because the blue hen is the official bird of Delaware, and because of the blue hens that Delaware soldiers carried around during the revolutionary war. Delaware even has a third nickname, the Diamond state, because Thomas Jefferson said it was a “jewel.”
Around the age of five, I was introduced to my first college campus experience. I went to a close cousins graduation ceremony, and she showed me around the school. From that day forward I always knew that I wanted to achieve academic success. I have already started taking great strides toward reaching my goals, and I am a strong believer that Rutgers will be a great stepping stone in helping me move forward. I choose Rutgers University because it possesses a myriad of things that a student who is interested in a vast campus, diversity, and campus involvement such as myself can use to my advantage. I will be going in as a criminal justice student. I know Rutgers has a very high rated criminal justice program that will make me a competitive candidate post graduation. The academic excellence Rutgers University possesses will not only aid me while in school, but long after I graduate.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
Greek Life, or the presence of fraternities and sororities, exists in many colleges and universities. According to Michael Grandillo in an Encyclopedia article, “there are more than 5,500 chapters on 800 campuses throughout the United States and Canada.” Although Greek Life is so common, participation in such organizations can be a controversial topic, particularly when critics suggest that hazing can be detrimental to students' health and college careers. For those who do not know much about Greek Life, or the process that one goes through to become affiliated with this system, there is first a week called “rush week,” where fraternities and sororities host parties in attempt to cajole students into joining their organizations. If members of a fraternity or sorority like a particular student, they will vote to give that student a “bid,” which gives that student the opportunity to pledge their organization. If the student accepts the bid, his pledge process will begin, which generally lasts between six to ten weeks. Assuming the student sticks it through, he will be admitted into organization and will be rewarded with the benefits of membership for the remainder of his life. Despite the fact that some Greek organizations engage in intense hazing practices that may result in reduced grades for pledges, it is beneficial for students to participate in Greek Life because organizations force students to create strong bonds among one another while learning important lessons, they prepare students for their future careers, and they provide students with great networking opportunities.
Sororities and fraternities are becoming more influential on college campuses and among the professional world. Over 730 schools across the United States have the Greek life system and there are several different fraternities and sororities on each college campus. Many Americans have extremely different opinions about Greek life as a whole. Although many say it is all about partying, there are many pros and cons to joining Greek life. Greek life can be a very good experience in college, it is whatever people make it.
There are over nine million Greek members nationally, that is why many freshmen have this question on their mind when they go to college, “Should I rush a fraternity or a sorority, and what are the benefits?” (Fraternity Advisor) Greek organizations are very popular on college campuses, they are organizations that are identified by Greek letters, and typically support a certain organization that helps better the campus and community. Fraternities are for men and sororities are for women, once a student has rushed and been accepted into the particular organization they will then have to pay dues which will go towards the fees, operating costs, and their social functions. Even though Greek organizations appear to have a bad reputation, colleges
The history of fraternity and sorority was invented years ago due to the limitation of regulations on student’s activities and clubs. They are mainly known for their work and service within the community and campus. But the questionable act of sorority and fraternity impact on student’s education and life is the main concern. The commitment and dedication of members within sorority and fraternity overtakes majority of student’s life. In the journal, “The Effects of Fraternity/Sorority Membership on College Experiences and Outcomes,” authors Asel, Pascerella and Seifret, provides the explanation of a Greek’s life experience and the outcome of it. Studies has showed that the number of students spend more hours per week participating in extracurricular
What makes me like most others seeking acceptance into your program is a strong desire to help others, excellent grades and evidence of my interest through experience. What separates me from other applicants is my independence, self-confidence and my sense of adventure, all qualities I have developed through my experiences as a Division 1 collegiate athlete. Volleyball has taught me how to simultaneously be a leader and a teammate. It has taught me how to achieve, with grace, both success and defeat. It forced me to understand the difficult journey of recovery from injury. And, on a more mental level, being a member of a college athletic team challenged my ability to manage my time and work with professors to accommodate missed material. As a freshman, going to college out of state was an act of faith and courage, but one that I do not regret. All of these experiences have given me confidence that I can act and think independently...
My experience so far at William Penn University has been a roller coaster ride. It has had its ups and downs similar to any other new experience to a person. As a freshman it takes some adjusting to get used to the style, especially when I have had the support from my parents for a long time. I have had moments here that I have enjoyed, and other ones that I would rather not have to deal with. It has been a full 7 weeks, but it definitely has been an experience I will need in the future and it is better to learn it now than later on down the road.
