The Vietnam war was a conflict between southern Vietnam and the U.S. vs. the
people of northern Vietnam. The conflict in Vietnam was sparked by a desire to combine the two separate countries that were separated by this imaginary line. When north Vietnam showed its perfidiousness nature towards southern Vietnam many tensions arose. North Vietnam thought it was their usufruct to control south Vietnam as they desired. This and many other tensions combined lead to the Vietnam war. The Vietnam war, although many lives were lost, turned out to be a vital step to extinguishing the communist rule in Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh, the Communist leader in north Vietnam, wanted to make Vietnam all
communist. However, the people in southern Vietnam did not want to become communist. Ho Chi Minh sent adversaries to inform the southern Vietnamese of the communist way. The Viet Cong was a group of south Vietnamese who wanted to become Communist. The southern Vietnamese army fought against the Viet Cong in South Korea. The U.S. Started to send supplies to help the army of south Vietnam. All was well until northern Vietnam started to send troops to aid the Viet Cong. When the conflict escalated the Americans had to intervene in an attempt to keep the Communist power subsided.

resulting in 3 million casualties, 58,000 of those being American soldiers.
By 1962, the U.S. Military sent 9,000 troops to fight the war alongside southern Vietnam. From 1956 to 1975 2.5 million Americans served in Vietnam. 1/3 of those troops were drafted and the others volunteered. There were 11,000 women serving as nurses and other non-combative roles. Although the civil rights movement just ended 12.5% of the troops were African Americans. The average age of the American soldier was 21. One in every 10 American soldiers was killed or wounded in Vietnam. 1,700 American soldiers have never been found, still to this day (1). The Vietnam war was a costly war but was fought because the underlying view of communism must be
terminated. The U.S. pulled the troops out in 1973. The war was still going on in south Vietnam. The U.S. knew south Vietnam couldn't win it alone but denied to send more troops. The Communist troops of north Vietnam kept invading the south. The south could no longer take the heat and was forced to withdraw. Northern Vietnam was able to take over the south and win the war. North Vietnam killed nearly 5 million people in south Vietnam who they believed were resisting during the war (2). The aftermath of the Vietnam war created the largest flood of refugees since WWII. Northern Vietnam combined to form one country, Vietnam, which happened to be communist, to the U.S.'s dismay. The U.S. tried to help south Vietnam and push out the Communist government in north Vietnam, they did not succeed. Through 8 years of warfare, the U.S. could not endure any longer and was forced to pull out (3). The U.S.'s fight against communism would be postponed to a later date. There are still questions why the U.S. entered the war and if it was justifiable. Those questions only arose because we did not succeed in winning the Vietnam war. The Vietnam war was a war that most people say we should not have taken place in. However, for the soldiers who fought in the war we will always pay you the correct homage you deserve. This prolonged war that the U.S. fought in was named the Vietnam war, however, some experts refer to it as the war we should not have been apart of.

North Vietnam came under the control of the Vietnamese Communists who had opposed France and aimed for a unified Vietnam under Communist rule. Vietnamese who had collaborated with the French controlled the South. For this reason the United States became involved in Vietnam because it believed that if all of the country fell under a Communist government, Communism would spread throughout Southeast Asia and further. This belief is known as the domino theory. The decision to enter Vietnam reflected Americas idea of its global role - the U.S. could not recoil from world leadership.
It consisted of North Vietnam trying to make South Vietnam a communist government. The United States later joined this conflict because of the stress North Vietnam was putting on South Vietnam to become a government that America did not want. The main reason why America joined was because of a theory called the Domino Effect. America and Russia were going through what has been dubbed the Cold War. The Domino Effect is the theory that communism will spread from one country to another.
The Vietnam War was a war over communism that started in 1950, when Ho Chi Minh, the national leader of Vietnam, introduced a communist government into North Vietnam. In 1954 it was decided to split the country at the 17th parallel, and was ruled under opposing governments, Bao Dai leading the south and Ho Chi Mihn the north. North Vietnam went to war with South Vietnam with the north being supported by Russia and China, as they were also Communist countries, and the south being supported by Britain and the USA.
It is understandable that some Americans strongly opposed the United States getting involved in the Vietnam War. It had not been a long time since the end of World War II and simply put, most Americans were tired of fighting. Mark Atwood Lawrence is one of the people who opposed our involvement in the Vietnam War. In his essay, “Vietnam: A Mistake of Western Alliance”, Lawrence argues that the Vietnam War was unnecessary and that it went against our democratic policies, but that there were a lot of things that influenced our involvement.
The speech that I chose to analyze and critique is from John Forbes Kerry “Vietnam Veterans Against the War” to the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. In this speech he did not represent himself, he represented the group of 1000 veterans that feels the same way he does about the war.
The French were forced out of Vietnam and Vietnam was divided between communists and anti-communists. The communist regime controlled North Vietnam. Those that supported the French and were against communism controlled South Vietnam. Then trained Communist supporters from the North, the Vietcong, started coming to the South. America decided that they wanted to stop the spread of communism by stopping communism in Vietnam. The United States believed in the Domino Theory. The Domino Theory is the theory that communism will continue to spread around the world unless it is stopped. America sent soldiers over to Vietnam to help the South fight against the North. Then American ships were supposedly attacked of the coast of Vietnam. This is when the United States officially entered the war.
North and South Vietnam were at war, the North side promoting communism (with the help from the Soviet Union) and the South side was not. Wanting to contain communism, America got involved (as well the United Nations) and help South Vietnam fight back. This war took a toll on everyone involved economically and politically. For millions have died, and millions of dollars were used to aid this war. At some point people started to realize that the war in Vietnam was pointless. Even Americans were starting to see America involvement as a waste of valuable resources and lives. By 1975, U.S. pulled out of Vietnam, and with no support from America, South Vietnam was defeated by the North. This allowed Vietnam to reunify and become a communist
The reasons for the Vietnam War took place long before the war even began. For years, the Vietnamese had been under French colonial rule. But, when Communist revolutionary Ho Chi Minh came back to Vietnam, he established a group called the Viet Minh, the goal of which was to remove all French occupation from Vietnam. So, the fighting started, and Ho Chi Minh tried to get the US to support them. But, being true to their policies of containment, the US started supporting France. The United States' thoughts about Communism's potential growth can be summed up in one basic idea: the Domino Theory. This theory stated that if one country in a region fell to Communism, the surrounding countries would soon follow. Because of this, the US committed to keeping the North Vietnamese contained once the French withdrew from Vietnam. But, the thing that really pushed the US into sending troops into Vietnam was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. On August 2nd and 4th, 1964, the North Vietnamese fired upon two US ships in the Gulf of Tonkin. Following this, Congress approved the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution on August 7, 1964, which gave the president authority to send military troops into Vietnam without declaring war. So, President Johnson sent troops into Vietnam, which had already erupted into civil war, to aid the South Vietnamese.
The conflict in Vietnam for the United States started when President Dwight D. Eisenhower went along with the domino theory and sent in military advisors in South Vietnam to stop the communist movement from taking place in South Vietnam. The Vietnam conflict was between the communist’s and the United States. North Vietnam was led by Ho Chi Minh, and Ho Chi Minh led the Viet Cong, a guerilla group to help spread communism. The United States were supporters of the South Vietnam because they wanted them to maintain their government rather than falling to the domino theory of communism. After Eisenhower’s term ended, John F. Kennedy became president and took control of the situation in Vietnam.
Throughout history various countries have tried to govern Vietnam. In the beginning, when Vietnam was unstable countries like Japan, China, and France tried to dominate, but being that Vietnam was a communist country, the United States wanted to stop the spreading of communism around the world. Furthermore, the US then helped Vietnam overcome this obstacle of countries trying to control them and lead Vietnam to be free but over the years the US proposed to Vietnam that if they wanted to become a capitalist country which, unfortunately they declined and because of this the Vietnam War began. In the first stages of the war Americans were care free but after a few unexplainable things, they became more aware of the war. Various
“The Vietnam war was a costly and very long conflict that eroded the communist regime of North Vietnam and its allies against the South Vietnam and its ally, us the United States of America (Unknown Source).” The Vietnam War began on the eve of 1959, causing a struggle between two of our major national forces. These two forces were attempting to unify the country the both love, Vietnam.
1.The main idea of the Domino Theory was countries who were on the tip of communism were going to go downhill. The presidential policies in Vietnam was the leader Ho Chi Minh who was a communist leader ran the country and he ruled the North part of Vietnam. On the other side, leaders who were against communism ruled South Vietnam. The presidential policies created a divide between North and South Vietnam.
The Vietnam war was, like many other wars, a bloody and brutal fight. Vietnam used to be a territory of France until 1954 when they surrendered because they outnumbered in a battle. The Geneva Conference was then held to discuss the end of the war and due to that, North and South vietnam were split up because of the different leaders. China, the Soviet Union, and other communist countries were supportive of the North while the United States and anti-communist allies were supportive of the South. The leader for the North side was communist Ho Chi Minh and the South was ruled by anti-communist Ngo Dinh Diem. Ngo Dinh Diem starts off as prime minister in 1954 but eventually becomes president in 1955. The United States and others wanted to avoid the
The event was a conflict to the Americans because they wanted Vietnam to not be a communist country. They decided to help South Vietnam, angering North Vietnam, thus creating a war between the two sides.
