Video Game Effects
Around sixty-seven percent of U.S. households play video games and average almost eight hours of weekly playing time. The video game industry has grown tremendously over the past decade. Thanks to new technological advances, millions of people play video games on their phones, tablets, computers, and gaming consoles. Most of the people who play video games are adults, but younger children and teenagers are being introduced to gaming. The effects that video games have on children and teenagers can be both good and bad.
Video games have some negative effects. One way video games can have a negative impact on children and teenagers is health. There are several health risks involved in gaming such as obesity and epilepsy. Children and teenagers can sometimes get carried away with playing games that they do not have time to exercise. Parents should limit gameplay or buy games that involve fun exercising activities such as a Wii. Epileptic people are also at risk since the changes in colors on the video game screen can lead to a seizure. Addiction can also be a problem with video game players. Some children and teens spend countless hours sitting in front of a television or computer screen. People who are addicted to video games have a hard time quitting them just like any other addiction. Squire mentions that “Games can be compelling for players, and any compelling behavior can become addictive.” Children and teens can become more irritable, tired, and lazy due to addiction. This can effect one’s attention span greatly which, in turn, could cause learning problems.
A common argument against video games is that they cause violence. Many studies have been done and data collected, but experts are divided over wheth...

...ed (Granic). Sociability is very important for children and teenagers which is why gaming is an easy solution. The child or teenager does not have to leave the house. Granic notes “more than 70 percent of gamers play with a friend and millions of people worldwide participate in massive virtual worlds through video games such as ‘Farmville’ and ‘World of Warcraft’”.
Although there is some negative effects from video game playing, there is several positive factors to go along. Video games can strengthen mental and physical skills, but when they are played excessively, they are harmful. Violent video games may cause children and teens to be more aggressive, but they also help spark early learning and creativity. Overall, balancing the potential risks and rewards of video games is important before making a decision whether or not to let a child or teenager play them.

Proceeding my perusal of articles and research, written by authors with scientific credentials or otherwise, I have concluded that video games are no more to blame for the ebullition found in today’s society than any other possible cause. However, the incessant brouhaha as well as the negative notoriety surrounding media and video games refuses to cease or let up. These claims—for or against video games—are ultimately subjective and inconclusive and very little can be confidently derived from them. Granted, the violence found in our youth is growing rapidly, and there must be external reasons for that, but using video games as a scapegoat will not rectify anything.
Many People have put their attention directly on the influence violent video games have on the bad behavior of children. People believe videogames intensify aggression in children, while others say it can be a safe getaway for a child to express his aggression. Many opinions on this issue are stated still today, and they remain divided amongst the people who claim videogames to be a cause of aggression and those who claim otherwise. A child’s behavior can not be determined by violent video games, but instead is caused by a variety of environmental and domestic factors. It is easy to blame video games on violence, instead of looking at factors such as economic status, familial issues, and exposure to other entities such as television and media. This paper will bring forward the opinions of those who believe in no relationship between violent video games and bad behavior with one counter argument expressing the opinion of those who believe there is a relationship.

Another reason that video games are bad for children is because it can cause injuries towards the person physically as well as mentally. It can cause auditory hallucinations, enuresis, encopresis, wrist pain, neck pain, elbow pain, tenosynovitis, hand arm vibration syndrome, repetitive strain injuries, peripheral neuropathy, and even obesity (NCBI. US. National Library of Medicine). Tests have shown that as you get older the more video games you play the less ability you have to multitask while playing games. As well as not being able to multitask, video games distract players from the sensation of pain, so in theory a child could have a severe injury and not even know about it which could cause the...
“Contrary to the claims that violent video games are linked to aggressive assaults and homicides, no evidence was found to suggest that this medium was a major (or minor) contributing cause of violence in the United States.” (Markey, 290)
Many kids like Tommy, who spend most of their childhood and adolescences emerged in imaginary lands rather than dealing with the real world at hand, become socially anxious and have low self-esteem later in life. Instead of thriving with a career and family, they relapse back to the same virtual interaction they had as a child. They float through life barely able to support themselves or result to living with their parents. Adulthood seems to them a mere task they must complete in order to continue their gaming. Excessive videogame play for children and adolescents cause social anxiety, depression, and aggression because more time is spent alone engrossed in dynamic storylines and complex situations than outside building face-to-face relationships and other healthy social skills that better prepare them for their future.
While many different case studies have been done all over the world, scientists have yet to prove that there is a direct correlation between violent video games and child aggression. Since the start of this quarter, this has been an issue that I have been doing extensive research on. Despite looking into several scholarly sources, I was surprised to see that many of my findings were pretty consistent with one another. For the mort part, what I found through my research was a bunch of statistics from case studies and the interpretation of those statistics from renowned scientists. In many cases, statistics and studies showed slight indications that violent video games have an effect on c...
I have been playing video games for as long as I remember. I started by playing the original Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System with my older brother and sister. I’ve stayed up way past my bedtime in elementary school playing Pokemon on my Gameboy. I continue to play video games even today, from the Wii to the Xbox and even on my computer. Being this avid and long-time gamer, I became curious about the effects that video games have on people like me. And so, I did some research
There have been so many experiments and studies to try and figure out if video games have a negative or positive effect on our children. A growing body of research is linking violent video game play to aggressive cognitive, attitudes and behaviors (D.A. Gentile, 2004). The 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of Video games can obviously be dangerous for our children, causing aggression, bad performances in school and obesity. Although we cant blame all of these problems on the use of video games, there have been many studies to prove so.... ...
This report offers information on the influences of video games on children and how it will affect their behavior and mental health. Video games are not considered as a serious addiction amongst teenagers and adults, often being compared to severe cases of addiction, such as drug abuse or alcohol abuse that may result in the appearance of a decrease in the severity of the addiction. However, video game addiction is a serious matter and has unhealthy consequences for an individual 's life and their health; spending too much time playing video games can take a great toll on one 's physical and mental well-being. Continuing unhealthy patterns of video game activity for prolonged periods of time can result in mental health issues, physical health problems, and a decline in a social life.
Many people believe that video games change people and mislead them to do bad things, such as drugs and alcohol, but it is the opposite. Gaming prevents people from such acts and actually helps to keep them away from the substances. Lots of people, mainly parents, believe that video games harm people so they try to keep their children away from them. In reality, video games make your life better. Video games can provide many benefits to your lifestyle as “numerous academic studies indicate that playing video games has many psychological and even physical benefits” (Guarini). Gaming helps stimulate the brain and advances your problem solving abilities. There are disadvantages to gaming, which is true, but the amount of benefits outweigh them by far.
This being said, it can be proven that advancements come with positive and negative effects. The video games of twenty-five years ago have evolved into something different and in some cases something dark. Research has shown in many cases that video games have negative effects such as: increased aggressive behavior, desensitization, and poor physical heath on adolescents. Many researches also think part of the problem arises because adolescents do not receive enough parental supervision with these games. After discussing these negative effects it will be obvious that more vigilance and regulations are warranted.
