This review is an experimental study on the way playing video games, against watching violent video games, effects children’s aggressive behavior. This study was conducted by Utrecht University students, in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The research conducted, and article written was by Hanneke Polman, Bram Orobio de Castro, and Marcel A.G van Aken, and copy-written in year 2008. The hypothesis behind this article is how does playing a violent video, rather than just watching one, affect a child’s aggressive behavior in real life. In this new world of technology, children are exposed and entertained by watching television and playing video games. “One study showed that children spend up to 25 hours a week watching television and 9 hours a week playing video games.” (Polman, de Castro, & van Aken, 2008) 30 years ago, children spent their time doing other things such as going outside, being active, and using their imaginations to make their own entertainment. There is no solid way of determining if children aggression has increased between this day and age, and the days when technology was not a popular form of entertainment for children. The students of Utrecht University; have come up with a study to help determine whether, the violence in video games is affecting the aggression in children's behavior today. Participants came from four different places and schools in The Netherlands. All four schools were located in small towns. The parents were asked for permission for their children to be a part of the study. 57 children had permission to be a part of the study, 3 were only allowed to participate in the questionnaire, and one boy was excluded for not cooperating. This leaving them with 56 children, there were 28 boys and 28 gir... ... middle of paper ... ...aving issues with an aggressive child that plays violent video games often. This article may help parents realize how these video games may be affecting their child's behavior. They may find taking away these violent video games may help their children's behavior tremendously. Also, if the violence in video games is truly affecting our youth, their continual playing throughout their adolescence, can affect their adult life. Leading to aggressive behavior displayed at work, with family, and just in society as a whole. Works Cited Polman, H., de Castro, B., & van Aken, M. G. (2008). Video games are one of the most addictive things in the world. Researchers said that more than 1.2 billion people are playing games worldwide whatever genre is. Many people buy it to have fun with friends, other people buy it for themselves, and others just buy it because they don’t have nothing to do at home. What many people concern about is whether or not kids should play video games. In my opinion, I believe that video games can make kids more violent for three main factors.
At this day in age we bask in the luxury of having easy access to advanced technology at our disposal. From the World Wide Web, to cell phones, music, movies and video games the human race has thought of any and everything to keep us entertained. Over the years studies have shown reasonable concerns regarding the long-term effects of video games. These games can desensitize gamers to real life violence, which is usually seen in the younger crowd. The studies especially hit on the games containing player-on-player violence. Though these games are extremely entertaining and can get kids to settle down for a while, if not properly supervised, they can produce adverse effects. Other studies have shown that video games can be used as way to yield positive outcomes such as, good problem solving skills, cooperation in a group and the ability to flow. Although there has been psychological research on children learning through the actions of others some believe that children are automatically able to distinguish between what is just a game and what is reality. The longer they are allowed on their game system the more they become convinced that their games are real. Some researchers believe violent video games can channel the aggression of the child but the parents are to blame for what happens to the child after playing an excessive amount over a period of time. Children can become preoccupied with these violent video games which have been proven to be the cause of poor social skills, uncontrollable aggression and a false reality.

Research has shown that immediately after playing a violent video game, kids can have aggressive thoughts, angry feelings and physiological effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure. In addition, studies that survey large populations of kids on their game-playing habits and measure aggressive personality traits or self-reported aggressive acts — physical fights, arguments with teachers — often find an association between games and aggression.
Have you ever wondered if violent video games can cause aggression in children? Thousands of children all over the world engage in violent video games for a large amount of time during their day. According to ProCon.org 60% of middle school boys and 40% of middle school girls who played at least one Mature-rated (M-rated) game hit or beat up someone, compared with 39% of boys and 14% of girls who did not play M-rated games. I will be using naturalistic and case study research methods to determine if violent video games cause aggression in children.
These days, not only does violence found in video games intended for adult, but also, in video games intended for children. Furthermore, almost 100% children and adolescent play video games and some video games in this era that content violence. For example ‘counter strike’ is a game intended for age 13 and older, but these days, children at age 8 years old already played it every single day. Video games have positive and negative impacts. Some of its positive impacts from playing video games are to learn sharing, consideration with others and finding ways to solve problems easily (Barclay, R 2014). Many people believe video games do not affect children and adult real life violence. Zawn Villines argued playing video games daily does not affect children aggression (Villines Z, 2015). Moreover, some people argued that by parents control in playing video games, their children will not practice violence in real life (Villines Z, 2015). However, video games actually do have more negative impacts to be considered because it affect violence in real life. According to Rachel Barclay, 90 percents children play video games and that every year the duration for playing games increases (Barclay, R 2014). Hence, the consequence of video games are several condition such as more aggression and become easily influenced by other people. For instance, Brad Busman claimed that playing video games can do violence
One article points out that video games have a big impact on children’s lives and that many of the games played are violent. Researchers have found that “nearly all children spend time playing video games” and studies have found that “8th graders spent an average of 17 hours per week playing video games” (Tamborini 336). Moreover, 68% of the most popular video games contain violence (Tamborini 336). So it is clear that many children have access to violent video games and they have a big impact on their lives simply because of the amount of time spent playing them.
By far the largest concern of technology today is video games. There have been so many experiments and studies to try and figure out if video games have a negative or positive effect on our children. A growing body of research is linking violent video game play to aggressive cognitive, attitudes and behaviors (D.A. Gentile, 2004). Video games can obviously be dangerous for our children causing aggression, bad performances in school and obesity. Although we cant blame all of these problems on the use of video game...
Violent video games can lead to aggressive and violent behavior in children and adolescents. “Violent media increase aggression by teaching observers how to aggress, by priming aggressive cognition (including previously learned aggressive scripts and aggressive perceptual schemata), by increasing arousal, or by creating an aggressive state” (Anderson and Bushman 355). As more children are becoming exposed violence in video games in the recent years, violence in schools and other locations where children are prominent has increased. “A national crime victimization survey compiled and maintained by the United States Department of Justice, shows that overall crime rates in United States society have fallen. Simultaneously, school- based studies reveal that many violent behaviors have increased among children and adolescents” (“Causes of School Violence” 1). Exposure to violence in video games can lead to aggressive behavior, desensitization, and an increase in crimes committed by children and teens in our society.

Are video games a negative or positive influence on children’s behavior and actions? Several studies have been pointing out that exposure to violence on television, movies, video games, cell phones and the Internet increases the risk of violent behavior in the viewer, like to grow in an environment filled with real violence increases the risk of violent behavior. Plentiful of the research on current media have focused on the violence spread by TV for experts in developmental psychology and John Murray of Kansas State University, United States, it is difficult to conclude otherwise than that violence on television has increased levels of violence and aggression in the society, and that video games have an effect even more powerful. Violent video games are more distress, than the films of the same sign and that the images of violence shown on television because they are interactive, because they use a technology environment that allows the user total immersion in the situation, while producing new objects cultural. The reason is that video games are not limited to violence to show a passive spectator, but require the person to connect with the character and act for him, while violence in film and television images whose exposure is limited only to visual perception. The video game violence has long-term real effects. Children exposed to high levels of violent entertainment can become more aggressive and develop a tremendous face the suffering of others, also increases the likelihood they interact and respond to violence in their social environment. In violent video games as success is clearly defined as killing or take, and failure as die or loses the good and evil as the wicked: they, different from us, it is just revenged, I mate,...
