Video games are one of the most addictive things in the world. Researchers said that more than 1.2 billion people are playing games worldwide whatever genre is. Many people buy it to have fun with friends, other people buy it for themselves, and others just buy it because they don’t have nothing to do at home. What many people concern about is whether or not kids should play video games. In my opinion, I believe that video games can make kids more violent for three main factors.
Violent video games affect your mental, physical, and social being. You become desensitized to violence; start acting aggressively, and you become and aggressive person with aggressive responses. These effects are directly tied to the amount of game play, so an effective way to stop or at least slow the development of aggressiveness is to cut back on the amount of time spent playing.
Video games are widely popular as a form of entertainment for young children and teenagers in the United States, and many of these games contain forms of violence. Because this causes exposure to such graphic images for many children, there has been a concern that these violent forms of entertainment affect these children. Numerous studies conducted by groups of psychologists have been directed on this particular issue, leading to evidence both for and against this claim. This is an issue which parents should acknowledge, as it greatly impacts their children. Therefore, parents must become aware of the issue of violence in video games and monitor their children’s access to such games because history as well as numerous studies and statistics to have shown that they have negative effects on children, causing desensitization due to the exposure to such intense images.
To begin, it is unquestionable that youth show more aggression when playing violent video games. According to the Director of the Center for the Study of Violence, Craig Anderson notes in his article, “The results, overall, have been fairly consistent across types of studies (experimental, cross-sectional, and longitudinal) and across visual media types (televisions, films, video games). There is a significant relationship between exposure to media violence and aggressive behavior. Lately there have been increasing amounts of people that say that violent video games are causing a number violent actions. To some extent this is true, but there are also studies that say games help people release their aggression in an appropriate way. I would tend to agree with the later.
The first reason that violent video games make people more violent is that people have been killed because of violent video game players. Evidence of this is from CNN news showing that someone killed another person due to violent video game, “An 8-year-old Louisian boy intentionally shot and killed his elderly caregiver after playing a violent video game, authorities say.” This evidence proves that even a boy at the age of 8 would even kill someone due to playing a violent video game.
If children are not taught that there are consequences in real life that there are not in video games or television, they might want to duplicate the actions they are shown. “An eight year old Louisiana boy intentionally shot and killed his elderly caregiver after playing a violent videogame, authorities say” (Russel, 2013, p.1). Video games are violent, children play video games, therefore children are violent. It takes an authority to teach the child what is wrong and right. “Violent video games are an ideal environment in which to learn violence” (Eakes, 2014). Giving the child a certain time to play is also a problem caused by the parent. Kids play games with guns and explosions and this attracts their attention. Children now a days believe video games and electronics are their life. As Emmons (2013) noted “Julian turned everything into a pretend gun and started running around the house like a pint-size Han Solo taking down Storm Troopers” (p.1). Violent media caused Julian to make a pretend gun and shoot his targets. This type of media can influence him to want a real gun and shoot real people as I mentioned earlier with the eight year old Louisiana boy. Violent media has such a great impact on children that some people might not see. if they see a movie and the main character steals something, then the child would want to also get an item that they might not have.
