Impatience sets in, as her family waits while she puts on makeup and does her hair, as if getting ready for school. Conley defined culture in many forms in chapter 3. Culture is utilized to rationalize many human behaviors and descriptions of all sorts of individuals and patterns. In other terms, Conley stated that culture can be considered a set of beliefs, traditions, and practices. It is also the sum total of the social categories and concepts we hold in addition to beliefs or viewpoints, practices, and behaviors. Based on my reflections on the various definitions of culture discussed by Conley, the one that makes sense the most is Material versus Nonmaterial culture. The documentary gives a better understanding on how children are affected by the poverty they are faced with. The majority of the film focuses on their lives and it shows how they are living five years after the initial recording. It gives insight on how each family faces different circumstances due to their poverty.
In the documentary, Food Inc., we get an inside look at the secrets and horrors of the food industry. The director, Robert Kenner, argues that most Americans have no idea where their food comes from or what happens to it before they put it in their bodies. To him, this is a major issue and a great danger to society as a whole. One of the conclusions of this documentary is that we should not blindly trust the food companies, and we should ultimately be more concerned with what we are eating and feeding to our children. Through his investigations, he hopes to lift the veil from the hidden world of food.
According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 32 million adults and 15 million children. For over 35 years, Feeding America continues to be in the forefront in solving this crisis by providing food to people in need through a nationwide network of food banks. In the late 1960s, Van Hengel established the nation’s first food bank and years later established the first national organization of food banks, Second Harvest. Second Harvest was later called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network and in 2008, the national organization changed its name to Feeding America.

Using pathos, facts and figures, and association, Hungry for Change delivers a meritorious performance that engages viewers and leaves them questioning their own diet and lifestyle choices. The film’s use of rhetorical and advertising strategies and its ability to captivate viewers make this an effective, life changing documentary.
Basically the farmers and companies are getting the profit from this while the workers aren’t getting paid enough for the hard work that has to be put in to work on the fields. In the text, the workers were eventually free of this exploitation and the workers were able to work to their abilities receiving goods and services to their needs; not from someone telling them what to do in an aggressive way. In the video, exploitation for the workers was still demonstrated; such as not having a break to eat (sometimes), very low pay, long hours, early mornings, aches and pains, filthy clothing, exhaustion, dehydration, and sweaty bodies. The teenagers and their families are looking to be free from this bondage and live like normal people. The parents just wanted to see their kids out of this because they had to deal with it since birth, but their children thought very differently.

In the documentary, “The Harvest,” the migrant works are exposed to subjective meanings by the way they view their work environment in the farming fields of agriculture. Most of the migrant works shown in the film are depicted as interpreting their social status as poverty and the inability to escape the harsh and demanding work environments they find themselves in. This can be best scene in the video where the young migrant female child is picking apples hoping that maybe her relocation to family in Florida might better her chances of a better education. Many view their situation as helpless as the one father finds himself with the daily struggles of vehicular upkeep and the challenges of always having to move from field to field for work.
The word culture is often used to emphasize the most unique aspects of a people's customs and beliefs. Thus, to refer to the culture of a people or group is to call attention to all the things that make that group different or distinctive from others. When anthropologists compare different cultures they do not mean that one culture is better or worse than another culture.

In sociological terms, there are two types of cultures: material and nonmaterial. Material culture includes the sacred texts or scriptures, monuments, traditional clothing, food…etc. Alternatively, nonmaterial culture involves the celebrations, values, and traditions…etc. For instance, in Christianity, the Bible is part of the material culture, but the values taught and embodied by this community constitutes as nonmaterial culture. Interestingly, cultural memory is the encompassment of the two! Culture is the totality of learned, socially transmitted customs, knowledge, material objects and behavior. It includes the ideas, value, customs and artifacts of a group of people (Schaefer, 2002). Culture is a pattern of human activities and the symbols that give these activities significance. It is what people eat, how they dress, beliefs they hold and activities they engage in. It is the totality of the way of life evolved by a people in their attempts to meet the challenges of living in their environment, which gives order and meaning to their social, political, economic, aesthetic and religious norms and modes of organization thus distinguishing people from their neighbors.
