The first part of the video describes Pat, a 64-year-old retired field technician for a gas company. After he retired, he had a good deal of time on his hands and started to gamble frequently. After a year or two, he was going to the casino every day. Since seeing a woman hitting a progressive slot machine with a payout of 350,000, he became obsessed. Dr. Fong, an addiction psychiatrist, mentions, “40-50% of the risk to develop a gambling addiction comes from genetics.” I was taken by surprise to hear that such a high percentage comes from genetics. Come to find out, Pat’s father had an addictive personality as well. I was surprised by the fact that, after Pat had the realization of what he has done to his family, he seeks out help himself
As Allen Funt explains in his interview with Philip Zimbardo, Candid Camera hinges on five central ideas: the first being the reversal of normal or anticipated procedures. For this keystone, Funt provides the amusing example, “You pull your car into a gas station for a routine tank of gas and a five-man pit crew emerges and acts like it’s an Indy 500 pit stop.” The second idea is the exposing of basic human weaknesses in scenarios where “people try to hide the fact that they don’t understand something”—like the never-ending oil dipstick or the vertically challenged elevator. The third idea the show caters to is granting people the opportunity to fulfill a fantasy. Says Funt in relation to this idea, “We show people talking back to a traffic

The Bolshevik Revolution was a defining turning point in Russian history. This overall revolution consisted of two individual revolutions in 1917 which resulted in the overthrow of the Tsarist government and the formation of a socialist society led by Vladimir Lenin’s radical Bolsheviks. For a moment with such enormous weight like the Bolshevik Revolution, there will be various interpretations on the true results of that moment and the meaning and value of these results. The film Man with a Movie Camera deals with the results of the Bolshevik Revolution and the early Soviet Society it birthed as it utilizes footage of one day in this early Soviet Union, thus making it worthy of examination. In the film Man With a Movie Camera, Vertov impressively
"Fed Up (Soechtig, 2014)." narrated by Katie Couric, focuses on the growing link between sugar consumption and the obesity epidemic. The film aggressively attacks the food industry, advertising, and the government who, it claims, all contribute to the U.S. sugar-dependent, obesity problem. The film sets out to prove the government, and food industry is knowingly causing an increase in the amount of obese children. It reserves its most critical comments for government advisory panels who make and enforce food and health policy, and its failure to properly regulate the food industry. They claim lobbyists for the sugar board have been instrumental in the removal of negative statistics from research papers worldwide. Instead
I chose the movie clip entitled “King Kong”. It’s from the movie “Training Day” starring Denzel Washington. Training Day is a movie that follows a corrupted detective’s day to day mischief as he schools a rookie cop. Training Day depicts a product of the matchup between screenwriter David Ayer, who grew up in South Central Los Angeles, and director Antoine Fuqua, who grew up on the rough side of Pittsburgh. Both Ayer and Fuqua are highly familiar with the highly intensified relationship between police and criminals.
Addiction is something that may seem inevitable but at the end it’s entirely the fault of a person who is addicted. In the article by Charles Duhigg ‘the power of habit’ Angie Bachmann got addicted to gambling, it was because of her fault as she kept accepting the offers from cassino and many other reasons.. Both knew what they were doing but still Angie let herself get into the situation, and the casino encouraged it. She was a well settled housewife, when everybody used to leave the house she was all alone. One fine day, while passing through the street she took a visit to casino just for a change. “She knew gambling could lead to trouble, so she set strict rules for herself. No more than one hour at the blackjack table per trip.” (pg 247,
According to The National Gambling Impact Study Commission, the estimated report is that nearly 15 million men, women and children have a problem or pathological addiction to gambling. Problem gambling can be defined in many ways, it can be viewed as a addiction or a behavioral problem that can lead to family and psychosocial problems as well. In the story The Rocking Horse Winner, the topic of gambling addiction is illustrated through the theme of luck, greed and the overall impact of the addiction. From the start of the story, Paul's has a complicated life with a mother who loved money more than her children and in the end, Paul's desire of wanting to feel loved led to his excessive gambling addiction resulted in his death. Nonetheless, in recent studies, it's been shown that there is a direct relationship between society's stance on gambling behavior and the occurrence of family and psychosocial problems.
Based on the video “Five Dangerous Things”, I had to disagreed with the five and a half things Gever Tulley said about letting kids do dangerous things. For instance, he mentioned how parents should let their kids play with fire, as it helps them build control, which in my opinion is not okay because what if the kid get seriously burned. Another thing he mentioned was letting a kid own a powerful tool , like a pocket knife, as in other countries, parents let their toddlers play with a knife which I believe it is totally insane to let your toddler play with a dangerous tool, in my opinion if I was a parent I would let my kid own a knife at a appropriate age. Teller also mentioned two things like throwing a spear stimulates their frontal and
I have been mulling over this topic, it is just one of those awkward topics. This theory conceptualizes races, and separates white people from non-white people which seems to be counterintuitive. The assumption is that all white people are born into privilege and that is just not true. Don’t get me wrong, I do believe racism exists, assumptions get made, and it is a social issue, but it isn’t just white and non-whites.
The article, “The Power of Habit” (chapter 9), by Charles Duhigg, is about Angie Bachmann who was addicted to gambling. It all started one day when she felt so lonely that she decided to go out and play in the nearest casino. Angie started by setting rules just so she would not become addicted. As days went by Angie slowly started to break her rules and gambled more than what she should of have. Angie lost a lot of money. Although, Harrah’s casino would send her free stuff and vacation trips to get Angie to play more. Angie realized that she had a problem with gambling and went away for a time, but she went back to Harrah’s casino when her parents inherit her money. Angie lost all the money that she inherited and started to get loans
However, in stark contrast to The General, other films were being made around the world that did not follow a simple Hollywood structure, but rather were more experimental with what a movie could be. Man With a Movie Camera (1929), a very ahead of its time, utilized a completely different style of filmmaking that resonated strongly with the ideals of the Soviet Union. Thus, Man With a Movie Camera sought out to make the everyday people of the Soviet Union the stars of the film. This idea was completely revolutionary as well, and almost by necessity, introduced a new style of editing to fit the story—or rather the documentation—that director Dziga Vertov was trying to tell.
The adrenaline-rushing feeling of gambling offers people the idea that opportunity lies within their hands. Unfortunately, there are far too many consequences to gambling to even begin to count. To win you must play, and to win big you must play big. As more gamblers can recall their losses rather than their winnings, gamblers are often dealt with poor hands and must play the risky game to stay alive. Even though gambling has so many faults, some still fall under its corruptions because of gambling’s deceiving fallacies.
During the Stop Gambling download, the root of your gambling addiction, the subconscious, is targeted. Gambling addiction is an issue found in numerous areas where gambling is legal. People who are addicted to gambling, also know as problem gamblers, face many health risks including depression, suicidal thoughts, loss of sleep, loss of appetite, migraine and anxiety in addition to marriage breakdown, problems at work and bankruptcy (9). About 2 percent of adults are thought to be problem gamblers (1). In today’s society this costly addiction is not often considered to be a common problem among those who gamble. Only a small amount of states in the U.S. give enough attention toward this rising problem of people that are sometimes even willing to commit crimes just to aid their addiction. In the past our government has sought out a few solutions that help those who have developed an addiction and prevent a further increase in the number of people becoming addicted. Personally, my outlook on the problem is that it needs a better solution. I think that a higher funding to gambling addiction clinics, more ordinance and restriction laws, and more prevention and awareness programs should bee brought into consideration in order to lower the amount of people who become addict to gambling.
