Vice Virtue Essay
After viewing the films Remember the Titans and Seven in class it made me realize all of the things in the media swirling around vice and virtue. Nearly everything we use as entertainment in the media revolves around these seven cardinal sins, the vices, and the seven cardinal virtues. The truth is our society today thrives on these things; many times we will not watch or listen to something that is all good, the evil is needed to supplement the entertainment factor. Our society enjoys watching struggle and violence.
Good versus evil is a very common theme in this type of media. It is shown in the two movies we viewed in class and nearly every other feature film in America. We are coming to a point today, where even the children's films, which used to be so innocent and good, are now making the transition to evil. Remember the Titans, a PG rated Disney movie, is somewhat of an exception to this stereotype. Yes, it does introduce the evil in the beginning when the players are struggling to come together as one, and the nation as a whole is not welcoming of the idea of integrating schools. This is really the only time in the movie though, that the evil plays a factor. This film is one of the true, "feel good" movies of recent years. The team comes together and in doing so brings the whole town together to realize that it isn't what is on the outside that matters. The makers of this film did a great job of making a movie that is appealing to both children and adults, something very hard to do in today's society. It was brought up in class that the movie was not marketed as a true Disney movie, and the marketers did that for a reason. Many teens and young adults are now somewhat scared off by the "Disney Movie" stereotype. They are convinced that it is a cartoon type, fake, happy ending story; which in some regards is true. Not knowing it was a Disney movie though; more teens saw the movie and enjoyed it for what it was worth, a rare, truly great non-violent story that leaves you feeling good.
Then there was Seven, a movie based directly on the "seven deadly sins". This film tells the story of two cops, who are trying to track down a serial killer who is committing murders based on victims who are role models for the seven sins.
The movie "Remember the Titans" is a character education filled film for all ages. To summarize, this movie takes place in the year nineteen seventy-one and follows the issue of racism. Two high schools in the town of Alexandria, Virginia are being integrated into an African American and Caucasian school, and that mix includes the football team. The movie follows the story of their development. At first, the two races sit, talk, and practice separate. After one practice camp, and one passionate coach, the boys learn to respect and become friendly with each other. Remember the Titans is a film from 2000 displaying a true story of a racially divided football team from the 1970s. The movie highlights the relationships of the black and white people, and how they learned to interact with each other in a time when this was not the way of life. It brings up a number of questions throughout, of what is right and what is wrong, and really challenges the characters, making it a very interesting movie to watch. I have seen this movie many times, and each time I feel like I get something new out of it. It is a movie that can be used as a teaching tool, it does a great job of interpreting not only what was happening in the United States of America at that time, but social psychology concepts through real life situations.
The word Contrast means comparing in order to show unlikeness or differences. Though this paper we will see the differences between the utilitarian theory and the virtue theory. According to Boylan (2009), “ethics is the science concerning the right and wrong of human behavior.” It is a method that allows us to organize our values and go after them. It helps us answer questions like: do I seek my own happiness, or do I sacrifice myself for a greater cause. Virtue ethics focuses on how to be; studies what makes the character traits of people. A person who has these traits will act by habit in certain ways not because of its consequences but because it is what a virtuous person would do.
What is right and wrong? This question that has been asked throughout history all over the world that perplexes society even today. Many philosophers have attempted to answer this question, but it is hard to make out what the right answer would be or even if it can be answered. Who would be able to tell? That’s why we as individuals must make up our own minds on what is right or wrong. We can only hope to find our own moral path. Though it is up to us we can take a look at philosophers of the past to be a guiding hand at times.
In the image of goodness in terms of society and/or personal actions and beliefs, people would probably want to believe what they want to believe, not let society choose who they should think is good and who is bad. In the book “The Crucible”, Arthur Miller demonstrates not only how people not only take what they believe in and use it to conduct their actions, but also, how it affects society all over the world. I,too would believe in my own personal beliefs or actions.
Is virtue all we need? Virtue epistemology is the theory that all of the things we believe are done so through an ethical process. They play an important role, in that our own personal experiences and intellectual facets are what drive this process. The fundamental idea of virtue epistemology is that knowledge is a form of a more general phenomenon, namely success through abilities. Which is turn means: knowledge is a cognitive achievement through cognitive abilities (perception, memory, experience, etc.). Knowledge doesn’t need to be anything beyond a justified true belief.
Virtue ethics is currently one of three major approaches in normative ethics. It may, initially, be identified as the one that emphasizes the virtues, or moral character, in contrast to the approach which emphasizes duties or rules (deontology) or that which emphasizes the consequences of actions (consequentialism). Suppose it is obvious that someone in need should be helped. A utilitarian will point to the fact that the consequences of doing so will maximize well-being, a deontologist to the fact that, in doing so the agent will be acting in accordance with a moral rule such as “Do unto others as you would be done by” and a virtue ethicist to the fact that helping the person would be charitable or benevolent. A modern day virtue ethicist virtue Alastair Macintyre points out that different virtues have been prized by different societies, and at different points in history. Virtue Ethics is therefore a morally relativist, non-cognitive theory.
According to Morrison and Furlong, normative ethics discovers what is right and wrong and guides decision making for all situations in many areas including health care. A normative ethical theory that this research will discuss is virtue ethics in the American health care system. The purpose of this research is to develop potential for excellence and to find the highest good for humans by doing what is right short-term, long-term, and to compete globally (Morrison & Furlong, 2013). Giving certain situations each theory can provide tools to assist in decision-making but virtue ethics concentrates on excellence and perfection.
Secondly, the possibility of the right to lie is refuted on the basis of virtue ethics, which maintains that lying is morally wrong though the argument or claim is less strict as compared to Kant’s statement. Virtue ethics generally provides a different approach to ethics by focusing on character development of individuals. As a result, virtue ethicists tend to look at what people should be with regards to their character rather than determining the right or wrong of a behavior simply on the basis of reason and desired and undesired behavior (Mazur par, 5). In this case, virtues are desirable characteristics of individuals that make them act in a specific way. According to virtue ethicists, being virtuous is regarded as being ethical because it is a reflection of the individual traits of fairness and striving towards accomplishment of human potential.
Randall recently finished graduate school with an M.A. in advertising and works at a major agency in account services. His job requires him to work as an assistant account executive for a client that is introducing a new sports car. His responsibility would be to drive the new sports car for six months while selling the car and hand out supplementary materials to whomever was interested in the car. Randall would not be able to tell the individuals that the car was not his and this promotion seemed deceptive to him.
The kids innocence, and them being naive leads them to believe that most everyone is good, because they have never really encountered evil before. When they are encountered with evil, the evil of racism and things being so unfair, and whirls them into an adulthood state of mind. They both have to balance the ideas of good and evil that are in a person, they used to believe you could only be one or the other, but in reality, the good is within the evil and vice versa. Even the good main character, Scout, has some evil within her, she constantly gets into fights. The theme is displayed heavily through Boo Radley, a man who they believed was evil, bt really was misunderstood and showed himself to be good. Then Tom Robinson, a man who is believed to be evil based off his skin color and the evil accusations made about him, but who is reality is good. The kids can see he is good, because the ideas of racism haven’t infected their innocent brains yet. In the present world we’re often taught key principles in order to live a flourishing life. Young children especially are often reared in school to become successful, and be the best they can be; and be a good person. We pose the question what does it mean to be a good person? According to Jacques Thiroux & Keith Krasemann mentions, when individuals apply these virtuous behaviors into their daily lives it promotes a decent human being (Thiroux & Krasemann, pg 78).
