The last two years during ninth and tenth-grade my knowledge has expanded and received a different view of the environmental field. I have realized there are great opportunities out there that enrich the minds of students interested in agriculture. I am currently attending TERRA Environmental Research Institute and a member of the environmental academy. The entirety of ninth grade and first semester of tenth grade my academy class was Introduction to Natural Resources. However, the beginning of the second semester (tenth grade) our academy class was replaced by a dual enrollment course. I am currently a student at the Florida International University Dual Enrollment Program. The class I am enrolled in is Introduction to Environmental Science. This course emphasizes a broad range of …show more content…
A major interest of mines in agricultural science is veterinary medicine. Veterinary medicine is a career I would love to be part of in the future. Ever since my mother was working with animals I got so inspired to learn more about this beautiful career. Whenever I turn on my television, I watch some surgical procedures on Animal Planet or National Geographic. Specifically the work of Dr. Jan Pol and Animal ER. It interests me how the technological advances in the veterinary field have expanded vastly during the last few years. One procedure that impacted me so much was the chemotherapy used to aid an elephant cancer. It was the first time this procedure was performed and it helped the elephant so much. I couldn’t believe it, it showed me how vital the field of veterinary medicine is to animals. Another area of interest is food sciences. The distribution, processing, and storage of products interest me, our daily lives consist of food. Which is why it is necessary to have people properly process and test the food that the consumers eat every
Vet Tech has always been an option for me, helping animals is something that is very interesting. It was introduced in 1989, the AVMA officially adopted the name “Vet Tech.” In 1998, emergency vets debut on Animal Planet. And in 2008, student population grows from 500 to 700. There are about 17,000 people employed in the career field chosen. Some of the common trends of the job would be, working at Zoos, Aquariums, Boarding Kennels, and Wildlife sanctuaries. These jobs are usually found working in an animal clinic or hospitals and sometimes at farms because that is the “normal” areas for this occupation. In this career there are some general duties such as: Observe animals behavior and conditions, Provide nursing care, Bathe animals, Clip nails, groom animals hair, keep animals calm during exams or procedures. The more specific duties of the job would be to: take x-rays of animals and develop them, get utensils and prepare the animals for surgery, keep and record patient's history. Most of the clinics are open 24 hours. There is not anything that is unusual about the number of hours/nature of the job. (Bls.gov.vettech)
For this project, I decided to take on the career of a veterinarian. As a veterinarian, I would have to examine animals to diagnose their health problems, treat and dress wounds, perform surgery on animals, test for and vaccinate against diseases, operate medical equipment(x-ray machines, etc.), advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments, prescribe medication, and euthanize animals. To get a job in this profession, you have to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. You also have to have to take many science classes including biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, zoology, microbiology, and animal science. You would have to take about four years of college which adds up to about $100,000 dollars in student
I am a biology and chemistry major at Harford Community College and am working to obtain an associate of science degree in biology and chemistry- calculus based physics from HCC. My plan is to transfer to the University of Maryland and study Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine with the goal of entering Veterinary School. I have been working towards veterinary school since I was fourteen years old. My passion for the subject began while I was working at Olney Farm, a horse farm in Fallston, MD. I began horseback riding at ten-years old and started volunteering at the farm within five months of my first lesson. I was homeschooled; therefore, I could get to the barn before all the other children got out of school. I learned how to retrieve the horses from their fields, groom them, and get them ready for the lessons for that day. Eventually, I performed these tasks for eight lessons a week. I enjoyed observing the various behaviors of the horses, administering special diets to specific horses, treating their surface wounds, and carrying out general tasks to maintain the horses’ health. This is when my desire for veterinary medicine began.
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
In one way or another, I have been taking care of animals my entire life. Growing up, I was completely dedicated to animals, caring for what could be considered a mini zoo. Naturally, as a child, I was set on a career as a veterinarian. Like most children, I was naive about the veterinary profession, but I had plenty of people to warn me about its challenges. Albeit initially discouraged from becoming a veterinarian, my search for a meaningful career not only revived my spark for veterinary medicine but also gave me the maturity and experience necessary to succeed in it.
Employment for veterinarians is expected to increase by twelve percent by 2022 (“Veterinarians: Career”). As they first start off at a hospital or clinic they make on average forty thousand to sixty thousand depending on what size preference (small or large) animals they work with (“How Much”). Veterinarian 's salary is that high because of their duties; they are to examine the animals’, diagnose and treat the animals, dress wounds, perform surgery, test and vaccinate the animals, operate the machinery needed, give advice to owners, write prescriptions; fill them, and do euthanizations. Working with animals is not the only part of their duties they have to continue to work on being compassionate, their decision-making skills, interpersonal skills, management skills, manual dexterity, and their problem-solving skills. While the veterinarians are working they are trying to improve on the public health by diagnosing, treating, researching on illnesses for all types of animals (“Veterinarians: Career”). As veterinarians give vaccinations and do regular check-ups they prevent some of the complications the animal can acquire. Some vets on their down time perform task like making new medicine by doing scientific research (“Fact Monster”). These jobs that veterinarians do is not all with animals it is also with people
In addition to helping sick animals, another option for veterinarians is doing scientific research and trying to make new medicines (Fact Monster).
When I first walked into Ag class I really just had “what ifs” going through my head like, what if the teacher doesn’t like me or what if the class is too hard. Turns out, i’m enjoying the class and then, I decided to join FFA. I never thought I was going to even try to do anything in FFA, but turns out I was asked to write a speech for the SEMO District Fair and just like that I was, hooked! Now you may wonder why is agriculture so important? Why is being an Ag teacher important? How can an ag teachers build communities? Throughout this speech, I will answer some of the greatest and most meaningful questions anyone could ask about agriculture and agriculture education.
This job appeals to me because I really enjoy working with animals and I would like to travel around the word to study all kinds of different animals. I think it would be fun to travel to places like Africa and the Amazon to study the different animals in those two places.
Lesson: Sustainable Ecosystems Engage (15 mins): The class will start with students being divided into groups of four. By asking multiple choice question, students will be asked to answer based on their prior knowledge of ecosystems through a Power Point presentation. Each team will compete for points on
Improvement of technology that is involved in producing, processing, storing and transporting the technology is a model that has been around for a while. This would allow the food to be stored for longer. This model has been developed over time, however, hasn’t been able to improve at the pace required as improving technology would cost a lot of time and money and possess a lot of risk that many businesses aren’t willing to take. Over the years many theories and models have been brought up to solve this issue however, none of them have been affective due to the amount of time and cost being involved, lack of knowledge that the general population has, not enough research behind it and many other various
What do the following approaches have in common when considering environmental education; Across the Spectrum chapter one and Urban Environmental Education chapter’s one-two? It is all about balance, environmental education encompasses many avenues; connecting students, community, politicians and others. When considering starting an environmental education class or program, it important that all the individuals mentioned are working together. Different foods are processed in various ways. Therefore, the modern food industry has impacted today’s workforce negatively by outputting processed foods into the majority of
The basis of the discipline focused on understanding of the chemistry of food components such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats and water and reaction during processing than storage. Good understanding about processing and preservation method are needed which includes drying, pasteurization, canning and irradiation (Susan, 2012).
Also, when I was a counselor at the Ecotarium in Worcester Massachusetts, my fellow counselors and I tried to show the campers why preserving the environment is so important. We did this by showing them that the vast majority of our resources, including medicine, wood for houses, and food, come from nature. We showed them how fragile many animals are to changes in the environment. Part of Ecotarium is dedicated to rehabilitating and caring for animals that have been injured in the wild. The campers enjoyed working with the animals and began to realize that many of the causes for the displacement of these animals stemmed from the loss of their habitat due to human intrusion. I feel that incorporating the importance of environmental preservation at a young age is crucial because it well help to establish environmentally-friendly habits.
