The event that inspired the cartoon was the Veterans Health Administration scandal that occurred in 2014. The scandal revealed that veterans were forced to endure incredibly long wait periods before receiving services at the Veteran Affairs (VA) hospitals and some veterans died because of delayed care. The neglectful treatment of the nation’s veterans was outright appalling to the nation. In turn, this caused immediate outrage and advocacy for better treatment of the nation’s heroes. The image is not entirely clear if it is supposed to be in the setting of the Arlington Cemetery or if the cartoonist just created a fake cemetery to put the headstone in. The headstone is supposed to represent a great number of U.S. veterans who died due to the …show more content…
The grave is an obvious marker of the failure of the VA as well as the cost of neglect and ignorance by the government. The artist may also appear to be using a little bit of exaggeration when it comes to the features of the VA representative. The look of calm and ignorance to the situation is exaggerated on the face to an extent where the representative is acting as if he is proceeding with another client rather than realizing that the failure to act has caused the death of a veteran. The nose and the chin are especially exaggerated in an ugly way that may be the artist’s way of making the representative look unapproachable and …show more content…
The artist sees veterans as those who have sacrificed much for our country and the artist recognizes that the veterans have been treated terribly. The cartoonist believes in the need to change the VA system and supports the idea of bringing in more appropriate officials to run and work the VA hospitals. It is obvious that the cartoonist sees the VA as careless and that the veterans are the ultimate victims of this issue. I think this cartoon is persuasive in the way that it makes the VA look ignorant. Viewers observing the cartoon would feel persuaded to be disgusted by the VA as well. The idea that the VA representative could be so inhuman is enough to persuade the viewer to dislike the VA .I think the appropriate usage of symbolism, exaggeration, labeling and irony help to persuade the viewer into being appalled by the VA hospitals and how our government is treating our
The mission statement of the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) is, “To fulfill President Lincoln's promise ‘To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan’ by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s vete...
Deriving from the Dutch word “karton” and the Italian word “cartone,” a cartoon is “ a form of two dimensional illustrated visual art” (toonsmag). A cartoon can typically range from being a child’s pastime to going as far as confronting the socioeconomic and political issues in a country. People known as editorial cartoonists draw these cartoons, often called political or editorial cartoons, using tools such as hyperbole, artistic proficiency, and satire in order to poke fun at and inform the public about a certain issue. One famous editorial cartoonist who is known for his cartoonist is Gary Markstein. “The Iraq Surge”, one of Markstein’s lesser-known works, and the “Five years in Iraq” both deal with the Iraq War. The Iraq war was an invasion
In this class, the stereotypes that were discussed were the ones that the cartoon portrays: violent and considered as an inferior race. The stereotype violent mainly came from Bare Knuckle boxing though because it was the best job an Irish man could get and they were reinforcing it. The stereotype inferior race came from the fact that the WASPs said that the Irish were black on the inside. They considered them as “simian, low browed and brutish” comparing them to Africans and apes, and also said that they were apelike, lazy, immoral, and uneducated. These stereotypes connect with inferior race because the WASPs think that they could have proved that the Irish were not just like them.
During World War II, propaganda was an ideal and important part in making American citizens boost much production upon war efforts, at work, and at home. Most propaganda within the U.S. followed six main themes that were controlled by the Office of War Information, or the OWI, that helped make citizens on the home front become more active in helping the war. These six themes that the posters followed were: The Nature of the Enemy, The Nature of our Allies, The Need to Work, The Need to Fight, The Need to Sacrifice, and lastly The Americans. Each encouraged people, in their own ways, to aid in any way they can with the war, and the most convincing was inside of the work place, where many American went during the war. Many posters conveyed
and I read it was the Korean War Veterans Memorial and immediately got the message the artists were trying to convey. It was very clear that they were showing the public that freedom is not freedom. The memorial symbolizes the soldiers that have fought for the freedom of others and it recognizes the importance of these actions and sacrifices. The intentions of the memorial are met by many people.
The cartoon shows the famous Bread March that happened on October 5, 1789. This cartoon depicts the women marching from Paris to Versailles. The flag the women are holding is a fictional flag that says “Blood or Bread”. The crossed pike and baguette symbolized how serious women needed bread to feed their children. The steak stick in the middle means that they would kill to get bread. There was an estimate of 6,000 women that were involved in the march. They walked 13 miles in the rain to get to Versailles for bread. After they went to King Louis XVI in the Palace of Versailles, they brought back the king and queen back to Paris which became there “prison”. All of these events had happened all during the French Revolution and during the Enlightenment.
The first Unknown Soldier’s corpse was from a battlefield in France. His remains were then put into a casket and sent to America. On the day of the tomb’s opening there was a large celebration that many attended to show reverence to the unknown, and to other men that died in battle. In America the soldier’s casket was followed by a large parade of military men to his resting place on top of a hill at the Arlington National Cemetery. In the video, US Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the narrator says, “In the amphitheatre of the Arlington Cemetery President Harding delivered a speech about the tomb. He then placed a congressional medal on the casket.” In this short video you can see the grief on all the civilians’ faces. This ceremony was a special part of America’s history. People were beginning to realize how real war was. People saw first hand that soldiers were putting their lives on the line for the sake of the U.S. citizens’ freedom. There were many soldiers to choose from to put into the tomb from each war. People who were high up in the military
Both the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong and the Vietnam Veterans memorial monument are places in which the dead are honored. The Mausoleum of Mao Zedong honors specifically the leader communist, Mao Zedong, where his body also lies to rest. On the other hand, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Monument does not contain the corpse of the dead. However, it is still a place that millions of people visit to honor those individuals who lost their lives during the Vietnam war. Although the bodies of the deceased do not lay to rest at the Vietnam monument, the names of the deceased are engraved into a large wall that can symbolically represent a tombstone and the location of the Vietnam memorial monument also resembles a cemetery. Some historical issues that
Cartoons help the audience analyze the author’s ideas and messages in a visual aspect, rather than with words. This particular cartoon from The Washington Post contains both a visual message as well as written words with a message. In terms of the rhetoric triangle, these two aspects join together to help understand the subject that the speaker brings across as well as the speaker’s ideas and beliefs to the audience with the subject. In this cartoon, the author uses the senses of ethos, pathos, and logos to show their beliefs on the ideas Rosa Parks presented. In order to analyze the political cartoon, one must distinguish the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, where the cartoon first appeared along with its political leanings, and the interaction
To conclude, it is now pretty clear to me that the image is focused on Uncle Sam. He is the ultimate fundamental figure in our studies of humans and Americans. By choosing to make Uncle Sam the central focus, Flagg created a countrywide known figure that almost every person could identify and relate to, which made simplified my studies. Regarding the actual poster, I understand that this poster had tremendous success at one point in time, but I think that it is now outdated. I don’t think that it could achieve the same results if, for any reason, our country went to war again. I need Uncle Sam to start thinking of new persuasive ideas if he wants those results again.
Superb pathos are used in this case. In this poster, Uncle Sam is very effective in displaying emotions in this poster. Uncle Sam attracts great emotions due to the fact that he is pointing at someone and saying “I want you”. When he uses the word you, he is able to establish emotions to any person who sees this post. Additionally, the use the flag is very effective since it ensures that it specifies on the audience being addressed. In this case, the audience is anyone in the United States of America. The poster was effective since it affected individuals. In the poster there is a person who is called Uncle Sam looking like an American flag, and ordering you to join the army. This can be seen through his facial expression and the fact that he is pointing. The colors are also effective since in the United States, they mean pride and
I believe that the flag is a symbol of death. When we look to the flag we think of our country and the people that lost their lives in the war, fighting for our freedom. In the poem line 93, reads, "I guess it must be the flag of my disposition..." meaning that the flag is a symbol of giving his life or the transferring of his being ...
Instead of explaining messages through words, they learn other forms of expression. One of these forms is art. When Belisa told the Colonel these two words, they brought him to his desired journey of change. In order to have the meaning of the two words by him at all times, the Colonel chose to get the two words and an image tattooed on him. This image shows a tombstone with a skeleton in a suit, and the two words Ignorance Dies below. It is also in dark colours because they are associated with power. The Colonel has an aspiration to be accepted, which he attempted to gain through power in the military. When this did not work, he approached Belisa to help him become President. The Colonel new that this was a position of power that he would be recognized for. However, in order to earn this power, he would need to change so that people no longer feared him. In regards to the image, the tombstone and skeleton represent death, while the suit represents him still being alive. This is because the Colonel is still alive, but his ignorance is dying. The skeleton represents the painful part of death. After the Colonel received Belisa’s two words, El Mulato noticed that the Colonel was as miserable as a man about to die. Death is a painful part of life that is not easy to accept. This is similar to how difficult it was for the Colonel to realize that he needed to change the part of himself that he felt
The figures present at the funeral seem to be close to the viewer, pushed forward by the artist who wanted to suggest realism to the scene. The painting represents a common sight at a funeral: people from a small community came to pay their respects to the deceased and each one has different concerns and behavior during the ceremony. The realism of the painting comes from the illustration of the characters: some seem bored, others mourn, while a dog focuses its attention away from the participants. There is no representation of fictional elements that would normally be seen in a classic artwork: opened skies that welcome the deceased, angels and saints hovering over the burial site, etc. Even the colors used express grief and authenticity of a burial
Pictures are not made without a reason. Every visual construct has some underlying purpose. Often times this purpose is to express the thoughts or emotions of its constructer. Political cartoons are used to this effect. These cartoons speak volumes about a period or event in time. If a picture truly is worth a thousand words, a political cartoon is worth one thousand one. Political cartoons are almost always drawn from the ideas of the public. Because of their significance to an event in time, they can be examined to reveal the opinion of the people during the time frame. Cartoonists are voices of the public and Greenberg is not an exception.
