On November 11, we celebrate a holiday called Veterans Day. This day used to be called Armistice Day. It was called this because, November 11, 1918, was the day that World War I ended. This war was known as the War that End All Wars. Sadly, it was not the last war so they changed the name of this day. When Congress changed the name of this holiday in 1954 they called it Veterans Day. Congress named it Veterans Day because it honors people who have risked their lives for you and me. Americans can sometimes take our veterans and our military for granted. I am proud to be an American. I am proud of our government system, our history, and this land. I am thankful for the positive impact our beautiful flag has made on the world.
Americans are defined by the respect they have for their country and its government, in taking advantage of their freedoms and rights that they gain by showing respect through allegiance, pride, and loyalty.
America’s veterans should be honored because they have suffered through so many hardships that others could not and have not survived, and they did it for their country that they loved and still love today.
I chose the easy route of interview my grandpa (Dean Randel) who served in World War II as flight deck operator that signaled the aircrafts and got them ready for flight. He was station in San Diego on the USS Wisconsin which was of course a aircraft carrier. As I grew up he always told me stories of the good times he had with buddies and just living the good life. This is a first for me to sit down one on one with him and hear about what went on. Before I could even get a word in my grandpa ask me, “Do you know how Veterans Day was brought about?” I was so shock he was into doing this that I just shut my mouth and listened. He continued by saying in 1921, an American soldier -his name "known but to God "-was buried on a Virginia hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, DC. The burial site of this unknown World War I soldier in Arlington National Cemetery symbolized dignity and pride for all American veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an "unknown soldier” was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor (I later researched and found out it was in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I hostilities at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). Spiro Veterans of Foreign Wars received an award from state commander Bob Mason on Thursday January 11 celebrating Fifty years of service to the local community and veterans. The Post has members from every branch of service with veterans from the Korean, Kuwait, vietnam wars. State Commander Mason said that renewal rates have held steady but that he would like get those who had dropped out over the years to come back and renew and that many of the changes he had put into place since taking over was helping to drive this. War is hell. War is misery, suffering, pain, and anguish. From the days of rocks and sticks to today’s high tech drones and aircraft carriers one thing above all others has remained the same; war is a terrifying, nightmarish endeavor. Unfortunately for those who fight for their nation, the battlefield does not remain in the far off land where the battle took place. In fact, those warriors bring back that battlefield, festering in the hearts and minds, sometimes long after their uniforms have been put in the closet to collect dust. It should come as no surprise that for a variety of reasons all stemming from combat experience, many of our nations Veterans will act in unconventional or perhaps even illegal ways, in an attempt to cope with the stress of their military service. It may be easy for some to say that these men and women, despite their service, are criminals and should be locked away like any other who breaks the law. However, if rehabilitation is truly a goal of our justice system it would not make any sense to take a group of offenders suffering from the side effects of combat experiences and throw them in prison, which is little better than combat anyway. This is why the advent of Veteran’s courts is so important. Due to their service, and the effects that PTSD and other service related conditions may have on their criminal behavior, Veteran’s courts are not only an honorable way to treat our nation’s defenders, but a way in which to protect them from the negative impact of incarceration. In June 1944 the landing ship tank is preparing to go to battle. On the home front the ship was mass produced in a factory for the D-day invasion. D-day was June 6, 1944 the largest invasion ever launched. Led by troops from the US, Great Britain and Canada, and involving Allied divisions from across the globe, the invasion in to France occupied by Nazi Germany. The operation was secretive and was set up into 5 phases. The LST was preparing to attack sword beach. The ship in the photo above was being supplied tank, vehicles, cargo, and landing troops. A great thing about this ship was it didn’t need a dock the front of the ship would open up creating a ramp for the troops and supplies to go out. This photo was taken the day before d-day.

They marched in formation as they entered the camp, amidst celebratory whoops and the NODAPL cry ‘Mni Wiconi (Water Is Life)!’ Their Mission? Protect the Water Protectors from questionable tactics deployed by the Morton County Sheriff’s Department (MCSD), Dakota Access, L.L.C (DAPL) outsourced security, and other Law Enforcement Officers that have been sent there upon request of the state governor. They will be what separates the Water Protectors from the Authorities; they are there for the people.
The United States has thousands of veterans and many of them suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The care for veterans must be improved. Veteran care needs to be improved because they are not getting the proper care that they need, not receiving credit for their service, and they were willing to pay the ultimate price for freedom, yet people will not pay the price of time to help them.

Being an American comes with great opportunities and freedoms. One of those freedoms is a person’s right to fly the American Flag. Not only is this a right that many Americans express, I believe it is one that they should. There are many reasons that the American flag should be flown, and one of those reasons is to support our current troops. All of our troops are fighting for our freedom. They go day to day doing all they can to keep this country safe. These troops leave everything they have at home, including their loved ones, just to fight for our country. The least we can do, as the people they are fighting for, is show some respect by flying the flag of their country. On top of the current troops, flying the flag shows gratitude to those who have fought and have returned home. I am sure it is one of the greatest feelings coming home after being away for so long. Not every soldier's experience is a good one, but if they get to return home, they deserve to be thanked for their sacrifice. On October 10, our grade threw a Veteran’s day assembly for our whole school. My role in the Veterans day assembly was decorations meaning I had to decorate the whole gym. My partner was Joey. Joey and I came up with some great cute decor for the gym. We had two posters, paper flowers, stars etc. I personally think the gym turned out amazing! The Veterans day assembly turned out great! We had music, a slideshow, a few speeches, a poem etc. We did have a little trouble towards the end of the assembly, but other than that it turned out swell. After, the Veterans day assembly was over we got to hang out and serve food to the veterans. I even met this one veteran who brought all his medals and had a purple heart! It doesn’t matter where you came from, as long as you live here, as long as your soul is here than you’re a true American. America shall live in our hearts forever. I believe as one country we can accomplish anything because we are Americans and we have the rights to fight for our freedom. As true Americans we should keep fighting to show the other countries that we’re not going to stop fighting for this country. The flag shows me a lot of privileges and opportunities.
