This paper will be focusing on the research done on verbal and nonverbal communication. First, we need to know what verbal and nonverbal communication is. Nonverbal communication is the way in which people communicate, intentionally or unintentionally, without words. Nonverbal communication uses nonverbal cues including facial expressions, tone of voice, gestures, body position, movement, the use of touch, and gaze (Aronson, Wilson, &Akert, 2013). Verbal communication is what a person actually says. This communication relies on the words a person uses to express themselves. The content of the conversation is the important part. This paper will specifically focus on seven different studies carried out regarding verbal and nonverbal communication. These studies will be about whether verbal and nonverbal communication should be studied together, and how nonverbal and verbal communication helps detect lying. There are a few studies on nonverbal communication regarding customer and employee, and physician and patient relationships, and how nonverbal communication needs to be improved so communication can be improved. Other surveys will discuss whether nonverbal or verbal communication is paid more attention too, and the gender differences in verbal and nonverbal communication, In a study done by Guye-Vuilleme, Capin, Pandzic, Thalmann, and Thalman, they mention that over sixty-five percent of the information in face to face conversations is given non-verbally. Their research is on how to improve nonverbal communication in virtual environments. I realized that you can decipher a lot from an individual or individuals by just paying close attention to what they do, and that words are not really necessary. The first link is about a pharmacist counseling a patient with fever and the prescription is levothyroxine. For this reflection, I am analyzing the nonverbal communication oft the first pharmacist in the video. The good qualities about this pharmacist were that she was siting straight which shows that she is attentive and ready for the counseling. From telephone calls to advertising billboards, communication is ubiquitous. Communication essentially refers to the generation and receiving of messages across a variety of contexts, channels, media, and cultures. This complex interaction is composed of both verbal and non-verbal interactions. Verbal language is defined as the use of sounds and language to communicate a message and thus accents, dialects, and languages all fall under this “verbal code.” Its counterpart, non-verbal language, is communication through a host of nonlinguistic methods, including physical appearance, kinesics, and olfactics.

Personal theories are based on, one’s own observation about how they themself communicate. Scholarly theories and concepts are based on evidence and research. Though the fundamentals of personal and scholarly theory are different, they can often relate to each other. My two personal theories are related to non-verbal communication. I learned a lot about Human Communication in this class when I read the chapter about Nonverbal Communication. Nonverbal Communication is the process of using messages that are not words to generate meaning. I learned that it happens every day. I also learned that is very hard to read or understand depending on the person you are speaking to or with. Verbal and Nonverbal codes work in conjunction with each other.
