Nonverbal communication allows us to convey thoughts and feelings through certain behaviors. These behaviors are expressed by the different forms of nonverbal communication such as body language. This type of communication is important as it makes up most of our daily conversations. Use of nonverbal communication is an integral part of communication in when trying to comfort others. A field that this is seen the most is in the medical field. When used appropriately a nurse can build rapport with a patient. This then enables them to show compassion to the patient. When first introduced to the counselor I saw that she had a warm smile and it gave me comfort. She also was open in her body language by having a relaxed posture and keeping eye contact with me. Her tone was soft, setting me at ease and just inviting me to talk. This use of paralanguage is really what made it easy for me to talk to her. Once I had begun talking it was my body language that closed in on itself. I had crossed arms and tried to draw my legs close to protect myself. My eye contact was always staring at the wall or roaming the room. But, when I did make eye contact, her eyes were always there. At first I kept a bit of distance between us as to not overwhelm her and introduced myself with a relaxed posture and uncrossed arms. When speaking she would not look me in the eye and her voice was strained like she was trying not to cry. Her facial expression showed her eyebrows drawn together and she kept biting at her lip, like she was concentrated on keeping her emotions contained. As we continued to talk I put myself more at her level and gave her eye contact at all times so that she could see that I was interested in what she had to say. This way I could also show that I was there to welcome her and not to scare her. Slowly she became more relaxed in her posture and uncrossed her arms.
