Introduction: Jessica is a 23 year old woman who recently graduated from college and started a vegetarian diet because of the health benefits she heard read it. Jessica read that “Vegetarian diets are often associated with a number of health advantages, including lower blood cholesterol levels, lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure levels, and lower risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes.” (American Dietetic Association) She was going strong on her new diet for a few months, but upon her trip to her doctor’s office for her regular check up her doctor showed more concern about her diet than admiration for trying to live a healthier life. The main reason her doctor had concerns was because Jessica has a lactose intolerance and he was concerned with her getting a sufficient amount of protein in her diet. He asked Jessica if she had done any research to what kind of foods she would have to eat to replace the meat she had cut out of her diet. When her answer was none, he decided to write her a referral for a diet counselor to help with her new life style choice. Jessica went to the diet counselor to help get the most out of her diet and keep her healthy since that was …show more content…
And opened to page 208 to show Jessica what most likely was taking place during her time of deficiency. The book stated that “Muscle proteins can release some of their amino acids should the need for energy become dire, as in starvation.” (Sizer, 2013,p.208) He explained that the body will take nutrients from other sources if it is not getting a sufficient supply. He gave her an example of someone being dehydrated and explained that to compensate for dehydration, the body will take water from the skin and mucus membranes. She was still concerned of the impact she had done to her body, but the counselor reassured her that with a proper diet she should do just
I will first show the lack of validity and soundness to Howard’s claim that A) a vegan lifestyle is a healthier choice and B) his claim that one must switch to that lifestyle to enjoy these said benefits. To the claim made in A, Howard uses his own health problems he endured on his meat diet, and uses it as a constant variable comparing it to his now relative healthy lifestyle as a vegan. On first glance anyone who eats a calorie-laden, unbalanced diet and ends up weighing 300 pounds, as Lyman himself admitted, will have health problems regardless of his orientation to meat or vegetables. With this said his comparing analogy is inertly flawed and must be disregarded from the argument he presents. On march 8 before the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, Mary K Young, MS.,R.D,NCBA Director of Nutrition Research and Information, presented the benefits of eating meat. Using Data from the 1995 USDA Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSI) she confirms that red meat enhances one overall diet quality. Young goes on to point out that red meat is the number one source for protein, B12, and zinc, number 2 source for B6 and third greatest source for iron, niacin and potassium. She also pointed out that red meat alone has the greatest concentrates of iron and zinc together. Also included cited in Young’s report was the research recently published in the Journal of the American...
This article details the benefits of a primarily vegetarian diet in primary prevention of heart disease.
To keep nutrients in balance, Joe would need to change his source of protein to more fruits, vegetables, and grains.
There are a myriad of myths and misconceptions that surround the words “vegetarian” and “vegan.” One perhaps thinks that becoming vegan is synonymous with becoming weak and holier-than-thou or only consuming foods such as Tofurkey. Thankfully, this isn’t the case for the vast majority of vegans or vegetarians. For financial and health concerns, many Americans are consuming less meat and poultry; approximately one third of Americans follow a diet centered upon vegetables and whole grains, with the occasional consumption of meat. Nonetheless, meat consumption per capita is still extortionate in America—the highest per capita with the exception of Luxembourg—largely due to its ingrained nature in our economy and culture.
The vegetarian diet has become very popular in the United States. How does not eating meat affect a person's health? It is important for people to eat a nutritious diet that will fuel their body. Some people think the vegetarian diet is bad for a person because there are so many nutrients that we can only get from meat. The vegetarian diet has a stigma that it is not very healthy, however the vegetarian diet can be very beneficial to a person's health.
Society has recently become increasingly obsessed with health and nutrition, as more and more individuals realize that they can dramatically change their quality of life by adjusting their diet and lifestyle. One way that people have tried to pursue a healthier lifestyle, is by removing meat and other animal products from their diets, whether they become a strict vegetarian who eats no animal byproducts, or a lacto-ovo vegetarian who still eats eggs and dairy. As with any other lifestyle, research is always being done to see if the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, and so far, the results of vegetarian diets have been encouraging. Vegetarian diets have proven to decrease the risk of heart disease, cancer, obesity, and many other health problems. With a little planning and dedication, a vegetarian diet will be healthier and more beneficial than a traditional diet
If a plant based diet has all the nutrients an omnivore diet has, why are we still eating meat? Many say that it’s easy to be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals, but a well-planned vegetarian diet can provide all the nutrients and more. Vegetarianism not only is beneficial to your health, but to the environment too.
In recent years, vegans and vegetarians alike have been looked down upon by society. They have been called crazy, unhealthy, stupid, and more by carnivores. Being a vegetarian for 3 years has brought my attention to the hatred and obliviousness of those who are uneducated about animal cruelty. All it takes is one short video on YouTube to gain the knowledge that could potentially open up a new world of thought. That is how my journey to vegetarianism began.
"We human used millions of years to climb up on top of the food chain, why should we go back to eating grass?" The author of this quote is unknown, but it has been around for a while, at least in my family and community. When eating meat becomes one of the natural intuition of humanity, the idea of Veganism seems like an unwelcome topic. But as a matter of fact, the concept of veganism was being introduced during the past few decades, and it is becoming more and more popular, multiple reasons are behind this trend, maybe we will understand the idea of Veganism a little better by examine the leading causes. Perhaps the purpose of this article is not forcing any of the audience to pursue a vegan lifestyle, but rather lead you to explore the positivity and various aspects of the veganism, and whether it is the one-for-all solution to human health.
Do we as individuals have moral responsibilities tied to our food? Peter Singer and Jim Mason, two controversial and influential authors have arisen debate over the ethics of eating animals. Many of those who favor vegetarianism insist that eating meat is as repulsive as condoning racism or slavery in past centuries. Eating meat is natural. It appears to be likely that humans are omnivores. We are designed to eat meat. When vegetarians talk about doing the right thing, they are not talking about doing the natural thing. To you, it may be just a meal, but to them it is their life.
The first benefit to being a vegetarian is health reasons. Recent research studies have shown that vegetarians have better health than people who eat meat. The risk of a disease is less likely when being a vegetarian. For example, vegetarians have a lower rate of gallstones, kidney stones, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and colon disease. Studies have also shown that not only does a vegetarian diet have a greater chance of preventing these diseases but becoming a vegetarian can sometimes even cure these diseases. In a study conducted by Dr. Ornish from the University of California, he found that a vegetarian diet is also good for unclogging arteries of patients with very serious heart disease. The American Medical Association announced, in 1961, that heart disease, which is the cause of over half of deaths in the United States, could be eliminated by a vegetarian diet. The AMA has also reported that a high saturated fat diet is a key component to high levels of the diagnosis of coronary heart disease. The reason for vegetarians less risk for heart disease ...
Moderation is vital in all aspects of life and is necessary for overall health, including with one’s food intake. Protein is one of the many important nutrient building blocks that is necessary for proper growth and good health. However, eating excessive amounts of any nutrient or inadequate amounts, can cause various health concerns. Scientists have been able to estimate the amount of nutrients that the body requires. However, the amount of any particular nutrient varies from person to person, depending on your “age, sex, general health status, physical activity level, and use of medications and drugs” (Schiff 2013). It is also important to remember that consuming the required amount of nutrients that meets your dietary guidelines does not
The health benefits of a vegetarian diet are hard to ignore. Vegetarians have a lower chance of developing many diseases, such as cancer and diabetes. Women who eat meat daily are more likely to develop breast cancer. According to an article in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, “consumption of well-done meats and, thus, exposures to heterocyclic amines (or other compounds) formed during high-temperature cooking may play an important role in the risk of breast cancer.” Men are also more than almost more likely to develop prostate cancer than those who do not include meat in their everyday diets. “Up to 80 percent of prostate cancer is attributed to dietary practices, and international comparisons show strong positive associations with meat consumption” (Alexander, 2010). Vegetarians have also shown to have lower blood pressure, better digestion, and more energy than humans with a meat based diet. The effects of a vegetarian life style ...
The Advantages of a Vegetarian Diet Having a healthy dietary method can reduce the chances of receiving many health diseases. These health diseases include obesity, heart disease, and cancer. By consuming certain foods and nutrients in one’s diet, the risk factors for these health diseases can be reduced. A healthy dietary method that is beneficial to reducing and/or improving these health diseases is the vegetarian diet. The vegetarian diet follows a dietary pattern that is characterized by the consumption of plant-like foods and the avoidance of flesh foods (meat, poultry, and fish).
