It could be contemplated why so many people dislike vegans; they are simply living a sustainable lifestyle. Veganism is the practice of choosing not to eat meat or animal by-products. Being vegan is a marvelous choice because it benefits the lifestyle of many people, both directly and indirectly. The environment is a very relevant issue for every human, animal, and plant on this earth. Going vegan could help the environment in many ways. Numerous numbers of animals suffer for the entirety of their short lives each day.“Each year on today’s factory farms, over eight billion animals are confined in windowless sheds, tiny barren crates, and filthy wire cages. The vast majority of these animals are mutilated without painkillers, denied veterinary care, and ultimately slaughtered.” (Saved!) Any normal person that saw this happening before their eyes would think twice about ever eating meat again. These farm workers disrespect animals and think of them as objects. Despite the labels on food that claim they are “organic” or “free-range”,consuming these animal by-products is still not cruelty-free. “Many ‘organically raised’ cows are sent to crowded factory-farm feedlots to be fattened prior to slaughter. Cows who are transported long distances and fattened on feedlots can still be labeled “organic” as long as they’re given organic feed.” (The Organic) This is just one example, there are many more. It is easy to be manipulated into thinking that animals are being treated appropriately prior to slaughter, because of how the meat industry can lie with such ease. People are unaware of the harsh effects of meats. They contain toxic fats and hormones not intended for human consumption. Each year seven million people die from cancer internationally. However, a change into a healthier diet, such as veganism, can lengthen people's lifespans. Due to the low-fat, high-fiber diet, the vegan diet has a tendency to prevent cancer. Veganism has been proven to prevent certain cancers, studies show that veganism hinders the development of cancers such as breast, cervical, ovarian, and prostate cancer. Not only does veganism prevent diseases such as cancer, it also improves one's physical and mental health. The elimination of the animal products will cause one's Body Mass Index (BMI) level to change. Fattening food consumptions of meats can cause weight gain. Therefore, the elimination of these unhealthy proteins helps with weight loss. Along with a positive body image, not supporting the inhumane slaughtering of innocent animals could ease one's conscious. However, without meat, vegans aren't able to consume the right amount of nutrients that non- vegans get. For an example, vegans do not get cobalamin (B-12) naturally because it is only in animal by products. Vegans can always take vitamins to fix this problem. Also, they do not receive a lot of calcium, vitamin D, and iron, but just like they take supplements, or eat fortified foods, as a substitute for cobalamin, is the same way they are able to fix these other problems. Animals trapped in factory farms are severely abused and tortured from birth to death. Chickens sometimes will be starved for up to 2 weeks and given no water to shock their bodies into moulting, chickens and hens will have their beaks removed to prevent fighting between other animals. Pigs will get their tails cut off to stop other pigs biting them off. These cruel procedures are done to minimise as few of animals dying as possible so more product can be created by the farmer. Within factory farms, animals are abused with overuse of antibiotics to prevent disease and maximise their body growth to create a higher yield of product. According to Animal Rights Action, 2 out of 3 farms are now factory farmed worldwide and factory farming is only increasing this is leading to more animals being raised for slaughter, abused and tortured, mentally and physically. The bible states that God granted Adam and Eve the privilege to eat plants and herbs (Genesis 1:29). It was then when Adam and Eve partook the forbidden fruit from the tree of good and evil, sin was brought upon the world, and the consumption of meat followed. Humans were not designed to eat meat; thus, meat is not necessary for survival. One will ponder what veganism is. Well, being vegan is like being vegetarian, but on steroids. America has one of the highest obesity rates worldwide. Individuals who are overweight or obese present an overall higher risk of mortality including from many cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer. Truly, America is in the middle of a health epidemic. Because of this, there is an ongoing discussion of what a truly healthy diet is supposed to look like; it is as if there is an unspoken battle between a plant based diet and a diet that allows animal products. The problem within the battle is the lack of compromise between the two extremes.
The animals that are raised in factory farms, and the farms are ran just like any other business. According to the article Factory Framing, Misery of Animals, the factory farming industry strives to maximize output while minimizing cost, always at the animal’s expense. “The giant corporations that run most factory farms have found that they can make more money by squeezing as many animals as possible into tiny spaces, even though many of the animals die from disease or infection” (Factory Farming). This is actually quit disgusting that we eat food that walks around in each other’s feces and can attract disease. These animals live a life of abuse, but we sit back and say it’s okay because we will eventually eat them. “Antibiotics are used to make animals grow faster and to keep them alive in the unsanitary conditions. Can you imagine going through the pain that animals in slaughterhouses went through? Most people don’t think of that part of it but the real fact is that billions of animals went through a painful life to be killed for food every year. Most people like to keep the thought in there heads that these animals live on beautiful green farms where they are treated great and then have a very peaceful death, and never feel any or little pain. Well that is not the case, these animals are treated very unfairly. The animals in slaughterhouses are given a massive amount of antibiotics, hormones, and drugs to keep them alive in conditions that are so bad they would otherwise kill them.
A United Nations report states that land used for animal agriculture, both for grazing and production of crops fed to livestock, takes up an astounding 30% of land on Earth. ("Meat Production Wastes Natural Resources") To meet the industry’s demands, over 260 million acres of forest in the U.S. have been cleared to grow grain fed to farm animals. ("Meat Production Wastes Natural Resources") With that in mind, the meat industry also dumps disease-causing pathogens through animal waste that pollutes water and forces the need for waste lagoons to be constructed, which are susceptible to leaking and flooding. ("Facts about Pollution from Livestock Farms”) Scientists say that about 14% of the world’s greenhouse gases are released by said agriculture industries, which is a growing concern for climate change and global warming. (Silverman) The meat industry uses one-third of all the fossil fuels consumed in the United States. (Moore) There is no question that farming animals has a negative effect on the environment and steps should be taken to mitigate air and water pollution risks and future deforestation. If animal agriculture was phased out, land used for animal grazing could be returned to forest land and some of it converted into fields for cultivating crops for humans. A global shift toward veganism, resulting in the elimination of the meat and animal agriculture industries, would protect the environment from various detrimental effects.
Today people are concerned with what they eat in order to lose or maintain their weight. What people do not know is how their food is obtained, how veganism is beneficial to their health and what the food industry thinks of vegans. Veganism is the avoidance of any animal products particularly food. Veganism confronts the issues of animal welfare as well as dietary concerns for humans. It is an effective method to live a healthy and humane lifestyle.

A research done by Physicians Committee has stated that 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease daily. And how does cardiovascular disease start? From eating foods with high sodium, high in cholesterol and saturated fats—meat, eggs and dairy! And because United States constantly consumes meat, dairy and eggs it results in clogged arteries and raises the risks of cardiovascular disease. It is not at all a fad, it is a revolution. Veganism is important because of the health benefits, the environment, and the cruelty that the animals go through.
Being vegan also also reduces pollution in many ways. Having a vegan lifestyle will reduce the methane/ nitrous oxide. This production of gases comes from cows and sheep which account for thirty seven percent of the total methane. Thats twenty three times more than all human activity produces. It also reduces the amount of water wasted. It takes about 13,000 to 100,000 liters of water to produce two point two pounds of beef but only 1,000 to 2,000 liters for two point two pounds of wheat. Another issue is the manure or waste water containing manure that come from factory farms do extreme damage to river and stream ecosystems. Farmed animals produce 130 times as much feces as the entire United States human population. Unlike cities that have sewage systems factory farms do not which so it ends up polluting waters, destroying top soil, and contaminating the air we rely on to breathe. Also the production of meat requires up to three times as many resources as the production of plant foods which leads to even more harm done to the earth through pollution and global warming.
Currently, there are a lot of overweight people in the world. There are many different diets including the caveman, zen, magnetic, blood type, chicken soup, and three day hot dog diets. The biggest problem with these diets is that you shouldn 't stay on any of them for extended periods of time because they are generally unbalanced nutritionally (Roberson). A plant-based diet promotes weight management because it is loaded with lots of fiber, and vegetarians can eat large quantities of food without consuming large amounts of calories and fat. Fiber, which the body cannot break down, is part of plant-based foods such as grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans. Fiber moves through the body undigested and helps remove cholesterol from the body which helps to improve weight management (Andrews). A vegetarian diet is full of natural and unprocessed foods which are higher in fiber. A traditional American diet is full of meat, dairy, and sugar which contain little or no fiber. Furthermore, people on a vegetarian diet can eat large quantities of food without consuming large amounts of calories and fat. Vegetarians consume large amounts of whole wheat, brown rice, and whole grain bread. Vegetarians tend to eat lower calorie dense foods which allows them to eat more food with fewer calories and more nutrients (Andrews). This helps to keep weight management under control. People on a traditional American diet tend to eat large amounts of processed food because processed foods are not filling. Lots of these processed foods are high in fat and calories and low in nutrients. This leads to people overeating because they are hungry.
