History is an important aspect of life that effects everyday life for everyone, and there are many reasons for why it should be valued. Valuing history allows people to not repeat the same mistakes, and this can be applied in relation to preventing war as well as discrimination against minority groups; ensuring the Earth remains habitable and simply in preventing individual mistakes in everyday life.
A common saying that most people would’ve heard before is that, ‘history repeats itself’, and it’s important to value history so as to learn from your lessons and not make the same mistakes. This saying is often paired with discussions of war, and done in an attempt to stop major was from occurring in the future; specifically, in today’s context,

One basic way, is that you use history every day to know how you should dress for that particular day, based on the previous’ days weather. But there’s a much more serious way in which history is important to the weather. Climate change, specifically global warming, is serious issue that will continue to get worse without appropriate measures being takes. However, the issue of global warming only came to light because of history, and without history there would be no effort to make a change. Global warming is the term for the Earths’ average surface temperature, increasing every year. By scientists observing how the temperature increases every year, this use of history lead to the discovering that global warming is occurring. As global warming and climate change in general can, if no intervention taken, make the Earth inhabitable for human; this can imply that history is important for the survival of the human …show more content…
After centuries of racism and slavery, many social movements occurred, led by people such as Malcom X and Martin Luther King. While these movements did not end racism, they did vastly minimize racism and helped achieved equal rights for people or colour. Though people of colour eventually gained their human rights, despite still not always being treated equally; people did not learn from this and history continued to repeat itself through the discrimination of other minority groups. This is especially seen today through the discrimination of gay people. Social movements to gain rights for LGBT have been occurring for the last few decades, and have been seeing improvements specifically in the last decade, with many countries finally granting them equal rights. However, it is a battle that is still being fought, with countries such as Australia continuing to discriminate against them. This shows how history repeats itself, and emphasizes the value of learning about history so as to prevent making these same
He argued how history has been affected by short-term climate change. The ice age period was a time of extremely changeable climate. He also argued how climate did not cause history, but how climate impacted the lives of humans, animals, plants, and the world itself. Climate played a major role of history because it affected the agriculture. When the agriculture is affected the people of the land must adapt to the climate changes and adjust their way of life in order to survive with these drastic changes.
Learning history has given me a new perspective on the World today. I have learned how WWI and WWII shaped how the world is today – from the visions of the modern to the three-world order to globalization.
“History never says goodbye. History says see you later” (Eduardo Galeano). History teaches us valuable lessons from the past, which can be used for the present time, yet our leaders usually overlook these lessons and repeat previous mistakes. I have recently immigrated to the United States and since in my home country history classes are not a place to really discuss the history, I was amazed by the way that this history class challenged every event and fact. I have learned that history is told by bias, so we should be able to think critically and question what we are taught. History is usually written by the dominant group of the society, so if we are looking for the truth, we should study each event from different resources and different
It was not until the modern civil rights movement of the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s, a period that some call the Second that these discriminatory laws and practices finally began to give way. During this period, African Americans and their allies finally confronted long-standing oppression, injustices, and prejudices as a unified movement for integration instead it became a total liberation and identity movement.
One of the world’s greatest social movements known as the Gay Rights Movement stemmed in the late 1960’s in America. After events known as the Stonewall riots, the Gay Rights Movement gradually became increasingly influential and empowering for all sexual minorities and gender identities.
The civil rights movement deeply affected American society and on a larger scale the world. Among its most important achievements were two major civil rights laws passed by Congress. These laws ensured constitutional rights for African Americans and other minorities. But racism was and still is by no means solved. Today’s society is still plagued with a fundamental discriminatory outlook on minorities, but the Civil Rights Movement created a step in the right direction for african americans among other minorities and inspired countless other
For many generations, especially in North America, homosexuality was not accepted in any way, shape, or form. Many believed that it was a medical illness that was curable, when in reality, people were, and still are, ignorant and could not come to terms that everyone in this world is different from one another. For many instances of being treated unjust, many individuals in the gay community did not want to “expose” themselves and remained in the “closet”. As means to make gays and lesbians proud and take a stand for who they are, a movement spread across internationally. This movement is known as “The Gay Liberation” movement which occurred between the late 1960s and the early to mid 1970s (“Gay Liberation”). The Gay Liberation movement urged individuals of the gay community to “come out,” revealing their sexuality to their loved ones as a form of activism, and to counter shame with gay pride (“Gay Liberation”). The Stonewall Riots are believed to have been the spark that ignited the rise of the Gay Liberation movement; it influenced the way the gay community is viewed socially and how their rights are politically present day.
Throughout millennia, issues of civil liberties have been on the forefront of human rights movements. Civil liberties change from each culture to culture, but in America there have been noticeable phase shifts. First, the issue was between natives and conquistadors, then black and whites, then women and men, and now one of the main battles is between gay and straight people. Dr. Martin Luther King was an instrumental public figure during the black civil rights movement. He argued that there are four basic elements that each represent a fundamental step towards a situation that needs change: collecting facts, negotiation, self-purification, and direct action. Though these were the components he suggested for black equality, this module can also
The civil rights movement in the 1950s-1960s was a struggle for social justice for African Americans to gain equal rights. One activist who became the most recognizable spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement was Martin Luther King Jr, a christian man dedicated to the ideas of nonviolence and civil disobedience. Although the Civil war had officially abolished slavery, blacks were still treated as less than human for many years after. Martin Luther King Jr has positively impacted the world with his peaceful protest approach to gaining social justice; but with the increase of hate crimes being committed, I believe individuals today need to pick up where King left
Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you are a man you take it.” (Malcom X, n.d) This quote perfectly explains the uprising for equality of African Americans. The black civil rights movement of the 20th century took place, between the years of 1954 and 1968. These movements did not just change the way African Americans were treated but also marked the start of many black leaders. The civil rights and arts movements created social activists that have been remembered, as the people who laid the stepping stones towards African Americans being treated equally. Martin Luther King JR, Malcom X, Nelson Mandela, Rosa parks, and Marva Collins are all examples of African American leaders. The movements never officially ended, because yet legally African Americans have equality but there are still numerous incidents involving racism. There were three major eras in the movements. The black arts movements started with the post Malcom X era which lasted between the years of 1965 and 1967. Next came the “I have a dream era” which occurred in 1968 and then the post Martin Luther King JR. Era which lasted between 1969 and
- It is important to remind people of history because it teaches them about previous happenings. It shows that for every action there is a consecuence, therefore every action or decision you make will have an effect that will impact your life and the life of the people around you. It also gives you an insight of what happened years ago so that in the near future, we are prepared well enough to make the right decisions in order to avoid reliving similar or previous events.
Have you ever thought how much progress the LGBT community has made and how it affects other people? The gay rights movement was and is currently a movement that “strives to end all discrimination towards the LGBT community” (Redlingshafer). As early as 1924, the Society for Human Rights in Chicago becomes United States’ earliest known gay rights organization (“Milestones in the American Gay Rights Movement”). However, most people recognize the Stonewall riot in 1969 as being the beginning of the gay rights movement. Almost ninety years later, society and the government have progressed over time and are still growing. Harvey Milk, author of “The Hope Speech”, was a politician who led a portion of the gay rights movement. Also, a more recent and well known leader of the movement is Dan Savage, the creator of the “It Gets Better Project”. The followers of the gay rights movement are not just homosexual. There are followers and supporters of every gender, race, and sexual orientation. The gay rights movement and its issues are represented in “The Hope Speech” by Harvey Milk.
“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” This famous quote from Edmund Burke is one that many of us are familiar with. In spite of this, many people disregard history, branding it as unimportant or irrelevant to modern-day situations. However, history is actually a quite important subject with a myriad of lessons to be learned for anybody to apply now and in the future. Additionally, history gives us much needed information about our past, keeping us from forgetting why our nations became the way they are. It allows us to draw parallels between modern events and past events to collect our best judgment and gives us the important knowledge of the origin of our modern world, giving extra credibility
Millions of people have gone great lengths to record every part of the past. We may not know much about the future but we have more than enough information about the past. The knowledge about our past has helped us in many ways. Historians, teachers, doctors, students, lawyers and many more have relied on history books and researches on significant events in history to prove their point. The question why history matters has been asked many times. It has been asked by students, teachers and parents sometimes. Some people may see this question as ridiculously easy but I see it as one of the hardest ones yet asked. Does History matter? This question can’t be answered in one sentence. Try asking people why history is important and the answer is usually “It’s to learn from our mistakes”. It’s not right to summarize over 4 billion years of history in one sentence. This question can be easily answered in numerous ways. I would side with the numerous historians who say history holds huge significance. History is older than any object or human being we have ever come across. History has proved itself significance with the help of human beings. We, the people have used history and made it one the most significant thing in present. History holds itself significant because it has helped us understand human behaviors, change in societies, mistakes influential figures have made in past, the past events occurrence and many other reasons. The most important reason is that history protects us by preparing us for the incoming. This essay would analyze the importance of history today by using the past events for evidence.
When most people think about history they remember a boring class they took in school a long time ago, they recall memorizing important dates, taking map tests, and falling asleep while listening to a lecture. The truth is that history really is an important subject to be teaching students. History is more than just some lecture you receive in class, history lets us look back, see the good things and the bad things, it allows us to learn from our mistakes and prevent such mistakes from happening in the future. Things that happened in the past are still changing things that are happening today. History is needed for everyone, from government leaders down to individuals; everyone has learned one thing or another from history at some point in their life.
