Recommended: Merits and demerits of community service

Everyone should do some sort of community service at some point in their life. Community service is voluntary work that is intended to help people in a particular area. It teaches people what is right from wrong. It helps you develop respect for others and understand that there are people who are living a harder life than you. You should not be sitting around doing nothing and complaining that your life is bad, instead you should be helping others realize that there is something out there that can benefit everyone. In order to achieve my recommended twenty-four hours of community service, I volunteered with the VFW Wagner-Good Post #216 in Hamburg, Pa. What is the VFW you may ask? The VFW or Veterans of Foreign Wars is a non-profit organization. Their mission is to serve our veterans, the military, and our communities. I personally chose to work with the VFW because of my grandfather. My grandfather; Joseph Deesing, served in World War II and the Korean War. I thought a good way to show him some respect for fighting for our country would be to take some of my time and help out the VFW. I love my grandfather which is why I would do anything to make him proud. I do not know what I would do without him in my life. I also chose to help out the VFW because my parents said it would be a good thing to do and because they know some of the employees so it was easy for me to get ahold of them. Knowing some of the employees of the VFW made my experience easier. I was able to get started right away since they already knew me. Everyone was so nice and made things easy and fun to do. Jennifer Naftzinger was my mentor all throughout my volunteering at the VFW. She showed me how to operate the different machines and made my volunteer work enj... ... middle of paper ... ...ittle could actually mean a lot to those who appreciate it. I also learned that doing something for others could be really fun. Volunteering with the VFW also increased my social skills. By working at the hamburger fest I got to work with other people and that increased my social skills. Doing voluntary work does not have to be boring. If you volunteer with friends or family it could not only benefit you by having fun with people you know, but it could also benefit others as well. The vision of the VFW is to ensure that veterans are respected for their service, that they always receive their earned entitlements, and are recognized for the sacrifices that they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country. I am proud to say that I volunteered with the VFW and I will continue to volunteer even though I have completed my recommended twenty-four hours.
