Nineteen eight-four is written and published in 1949 by English author George Orwell. The novel goes under the genre of political fiction. Nineteen eight-four takes place in Oceania where the population is dictated by a political regime. It was written as a warning to protect our freedom after the world had experienced two world wars. The novel is highly relevant to today’s society, especially when it comes to different ways to gain or remain political power. Some of these factors are the Ministry of Truth, the constant surveillance and an endless war. 1984 the population is under strict control by its authorities, like Big Brother and his party. The society is under constant surveillance to prevent the people to commit crimes or illegal thoughts, mainly through telescreens and microphones. Where every they went, the authorities could track them down, just like todays society. The population, especially Winston, had to be careful with their action and thoughts. For instance, if you smiled at the wrong time, it would be counted as suspicious. If you spoke “illegal” thoughts out loud the consequences would be to be erased for history, it would be like you never existed. For every citizen in 1984 “There was no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system…”, they lived in constant fear of being caught by the authorities. However, telescreens and microphones like in Orwell’s society do not control today’s population. We are greatly spied on by the government or private individuals through social medias and surveillance cameras. Large number of us spends most of our time on social medias, where we share our thought and beliefs without thinking about the consequences that someone could be watching you. Everything you write or share on social medias will be taken serious by any higher authorities. Compared to this, 20th century is mainly controlled by several individuals, both political and private. The population is control through social medias, which each individual is responsible on how they used it, and surveillance cameras. However, in both 1984 and the 20th century nobody can be completely sure when, how often or by which system they are being watched. Secondly, in both 1984 and North Korea there is a branch of government who control all the news and entertainment in the country. Finally, both societies are experience a war with no end in sight.
