Using Technology in Sports
The ball comes speeding over the net and slams down onto the face of the court landing just beyond the base line, the line running along the back of the court. I had called her winning point... "out." As I turned towards her, I could see the anger building in her eyes. We walked towards each other, and with only the net separating us, she began to confront me. She argued that, as she saw it, the ball was obviously in and that we should replay the point. I wanted this game as much as she did and we were both standing strong. I finally decided that there was no use in fighting. We had to resolve this argument between ourselves because there were no line judges to decide for us. We decided to replay the point and she won. I tried to convince myself that there would be times when a call would be questionable and that I should try not to point fingers. I still went home discouraged that night because I knew that the call I had made was fair.
The next day I sleepily drifted in and out of my Ethics lecture, although, the teacher was able to catch my attention by an interesting question that he presented. What is morally correct? This got my mind going. I was bothered by the match the previous day and I began to question myself about my call. Was it morally correct or was I being partial to my own success? I reflected on that final call that I had made, the point that won the game. I was positive that I had made a fair call but a little hint of doubt kept ringing in my head. What if I had made a bad call? What if I saw the ball differently than everyone else? Questions like these continued to haunt me throughout the hour. One of my close friends, Sarah, noticed that something was bothering me. She asked me what was wrong, and I told her that I was upset about last night's match and was wishing that there was a way to tell for sure if the ball had been in or out. As soon as I had finished, an excited look washed over her face. Being a track star, she proceeded to tell me about a new technology that was being used for runners.
Reflect on this week’s case study (Erin’s Dilemma) and the class discussion. Think about the MORAL model. After reviewing your peers’ comments, has your thinking about the issue changed? Why or why not.
In closing, the undoubtable influence of music, more specifically of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society is responsible for a number of changes to the status quo. These range from sexual liberation and racial desegregation all culminating with other influences to create an intergenerational identity. Despite the desperate attempts of older generations to smother these influences, these changes ultimately shaped the years that followed, molding the country into what it is today. Along the way these changes as well as individual involvement in them has also eased the lives of many through empowerment and a feeling of community and purpose. Despite a lull and renewal Rock ‘n’ Roll continues to serve as an agent of influence and change in today’s youth culture and continues to burn in the heart of past generations of loyal fans.
So, over all, this helps you get a better understanding that ethical dilemmas happen for all people, in all walks of life, in many different situations. It shows us we must pay attention to our actions and the actions of others around us. As long as we follow the rules, and ask for a little direction when we don’t know what to do, we will all be better off in our careers as helpers.
3. In thinking about your experiences as a sport participant, consumer, and/or professional at various levels of sport (i.e., informal, organized, and corporate), what are some examples of ethical dilemmas you have faced, and how did you deal with them? (Chapter
Yarberry, G.A. (1979). An overview of the past, present and future of the band movementin America. Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, 14(2), 1-9.
When Serena was playing in a tournament, she became frustrated with the umpire because Serena thought the officiating umpire had made a call wrong on purpose. Serena said, "I 'm very angry and bitter right now. I felt cheated. Shall I go on? I just fell robbed" (Rankine 27).
When the music group Radiohead first burst on to the music scene seven years ago, it became immediately evident through information means such as music articles, album covers, and an extensive website, that this particular band was not just another long-haired, head-bobbing grunge group only out to sell as many albums as they could. This band had a much greater mission than that. It was to inform as many people as they could of their political, social and economic convictions through their personal website. While dozens of other websites have cropped up about Radiohead, this website remains uniquely their own because of its direct listing name and multi-faceted page within a page of personal comentaries, many written in a barely legible free-hand style, of such issues as upcoming protest rallies, animal testing, predictions on Middle East genocides, wrongful government spending, and barely sqeezed in daily journal entries on their current music progress. With Radiohead's political accusations constantly being updated in oversized bold print, their political cartoons of talking teddy bears appearing on a vast amount of web pages, and an often rushed-looking hand-written on their musical progress, it becomes evident that this website was created more as a world news commentary than a self-indulgent display case of itself.
As individuals we are taught to devote ourselves to singularity: that we all have one talent, one “true” love, one “best” friend, one favorite book, the list goes on. This black and white mentality is the reason people with double majors are viewed as masochists, and when a parent says they love their children equality the response is a storm of skepticism. However, in Kingsolver’s case this mentality manifests in her reluctance to join the Rock Bottom Remainders because “Why should good writers play mediocre music?” (129). In “Confessions of a Reluctant Rock Goddess” Kingsolver utilizes her rock band experience to emphasize the importance of being oneself especially when it deviates from societal expectations with regard to what is “right.”
... the end, getting your music on a series is a positive thing, but I think you also need a killer live show, killer songs to compete, and have staying power as a new band.”
Do the names “Dirty Diana”, “Superstition”, and “I Heard it through the grapevine” sound familiar to you any? Well does it? These are major hit records made by well-known artists and musicians whom we know couldn’t take overnight to accomplish. Where do you think most artists started their musical journeys? Maybe it all started while in their basements banging away at tools, shelves, etc., or while sitting on the swing set in their backyards imagining how it would be to be famous, or even while just having a good ole fashion play date in their tree-houses with friends or family discussing each other’s goals and dreams.
When most think of performance enhancing in sports, they think of steroids and other drugs. While this is true, drugs represent only part of the true picture. There are other ways to enhance athletic capabilities that are legal and may seem to some to be ingenious. Performance enhancements in sports are unethical, unhealthy and need to be banned in professional sports. High-risk physical training, the use of drugs, or altering the human body with artificial limbs, is all performance enhancing, unfair and unhealthy.
Skill, Ability, and Technique in Sports Introduction In order to be a success at a particular sport, whether it's playing football in the back garden or opening the batting for your country you must have skill, ability and technique. Skill is the ability to choose and perform the right techniques at the correct time, regularly and with the minimum of effort in a specific movement in a sport. Sportsmen use their skills to achieve particular objectives in their sport e.g. scoring a century in cricket.
When researching the math behind sports, I found that there are a multitude of formulas that go behind the simple actions in sports such as basketball and baseball. Basketball is a game played between two teams of five players in which goals are scored by throwing a ball through a netted hoop fixed above each end of the court. Baseball is a ball game played between two teams of nine on a field with a diamond-shaped circuit of four bases. To be successful in these sports, one must make their baskets, and hit the ball a certain way.
Band is the common factor that unites our past. Everyone in this program understands what it means to sacrifice. Together we have experienced night turn to morning, hundreds of hours rehearsing become a ten-minute performance, and working under unfair circumstances amount to seemingly nothing. I can say with great confidence that band has been the most challenging choice I have ever made.
Everyone always asks what is e-sports, to be simple it's an electronic game that's played on a competitive level with prize pools. Most recently the government has recognized one of the most popular games known as League of Legends as an actual "sport". By allowing this to be noted as a sport players are allowed to get visas to come and play in North America or Europe or even Korea if they so chose, some regions are harder to get visas but they are obtainable (US Government).
