TASK 1
Baz Luhrman Red Curtain Genre
To a large extent Baz Luhrmanns film The Great Gatsby is considered as an example of Red Curtain cinema. Baz Luhrmann is a uniquely talented producer who bases his movies on a Red Curtain Theme. This theme is represented in The Great Gatsby with his use of unrealistic scenarios to captivate his audience and remind them that this is a unique mad up story and has no facts.
In the film The Great Gatsby many red curtain techniques are used by Baz Luhrmann as they have been used in his older films. The Great Gatsby starts with a golden frames and an introduction to the narrator of the story, Nick Carraway. This is the start of all Baz Luhrmanns Red Carpet films. This form of introduction helps the audience understand

that this is a movie they are watching and whilst still feeling engaged the audience knows that by the different elements of the film this is in no way a true story and more of a show. This highlights the key points of Red Curtain theatre as the audience knows this is a made up show they are watching. Furthermore, Baz uses a number of hyper realistic and over the top techniques in order to remind the audience that they are watching a made up film. This is shown in The Great Gatsby by use of modernisation in a time where most elements weren’t created yet. In the party scenes the soundtrack is Jay-Z, a modern hip hop artist as well as all the fancy houses and accessories Gatsby has. This is known as anachronisms, it is the placing of events and objects in the wrong time period to remind the audience this is no true ordinary story. This technique only strengthens the theme of Red Curtain by reminding the audience this is no true event. Additionally, Baz uses a series of extreme long shots and low-angles representing Baz’s signature male gaze technique. This symbolises the distant relationship between Gatsby and Daisy. The male gaze shows the audience the kind of objectifying or possessing look that men exert off of women. This is a Red Curtain technique used in both Gatsby and Moulin Rouge. The technique allows viewers to identify the main characters point of view. This still creates the view that the audience can identify that the film is a made up story. In conjunction, another Red Curtain technique used by Baz to allow the audience to identify the focal points of the film is that in the beginning of The Great Gatsby the ending of the story is given away at the start. This is shown when the film starts Nick is talking to the doctor about the story of Gatsby’s death at the very start of the film. This shows that it is not important on how the movie ends but what the in-between is. Baz also uses quick cuts, vibrant music and excessive imagery to go through normal scenes. However when there is an important scene everything is slowed down and is payed much attention to in order to highlight the importance of the scene for the audience. This in addition highlights Baz’s Red Curtain theme in The Great Gatsby. The Great Gatsby is to a great extent considered as Red Curtain Cinema as many of the techniques used above are the similar to those used in Moulin Rouge such as the male gaze, revealing the ending in the beginning of the film as well as the excessive camera shots and foregrounding. These original film techniques all relate to Baz and his Red Curtain created cinema. [615 words] TASK 2 Part A In the very beginning of Macbeth we are at the scene where Macbeth speaks to the tree witches.
The witches tell him his prophesy and what lies ahead. They mention right in the beginning that he will be killed by only that who is not born of a women. Many quick cuts take place in this scene to show the chaos of the witches. This technique gives a small outlook to the audience to highlight that Macbeth will die and that is not the important factor in the film. The importance is what leads to his death. at this time spotlight by Lil Peep is being played. This song will create anachronism and is fitting as Macbeth is now in the spotlight.
Macbeth is told by the witches for him to seek the throne the only thing in the way is king Duncan. Macbeth then tells his wife about the witches prophesy. Lady Macbeth then eggs Macbeth on into killing king Duncan to take the throne now. Lady Macbeth tells him she will slip drugs into the guards drinks and will give Macbeth the clear signal when he can murder king Duncan.
No more quick cuts take place and the setting is quite and still with many up to date set designs such as flat screen TV and cell phones and iPads by the bed. Macbeth puts a pillow over Duncan head and shoots him with one of the guards
guns. The soldiers run towards Macbeths castle firing machine guns and throwing explosives all seeking to kill Macbeth. Macbeth is unfazed by the attack as he remembers the witches telling him that no man born of a women will harm him. At this moment Skyfall by Adele will be playing in the background simulating the chaos unfolding. Macduff tells Macbeth that he was not born of his mother as he was a caesarean section. Macduff then shoots Macbeth in the head. TASK 2 Part B The techniques used in the above are all extracted from Baz Luhrmanns Red Curtain cinema. There is use of anachronism such as new set design in olden day time as well as new songs which were not around during the play. As well as other distinct characteristics used as a trait by Baz Luhrmann. In the opening scene the plot is given away at the very start as the audience is informed that in the end Macbeth will be killed by one not born of a women. There is also use of anachronism by adding a current song which would not have been placed in that time era. These techniques help match the red curtain theme as these are specific traits used to highlight that this is a farfetched story and breaks traditional methods of production. Additionally, looking at both the first and second scene quick cuts are used to create a sense of chaos by not having implied focus on a specific ideology. This is a technique used by Baz to show the audience that this scene is kind of a fast forward to the important part without leaving out details that may cause confusion to the audience. This once again makes use of red curtain cinema as it is a trait of Baz’s to let the audience distinguish the important from the unimportant. Furthermore, toward the ending scenes the use of quick cuts are reduced as the important scenes are highlighted such as king Duncans death as well as part where Macduff tells Macbeth that he is not born of a women. However it is important to note that Macbeths death is tragic but is not shown for too long as that is not of main importance. The main importance is stressed on King Duncans death as well as the fact Macduff is not born of a women. This again uses Baz’s signature move to stress on unusual scenes of the film. The fight breaks out with quick cuts and high angles on Macduff in the fight with Macduff to show Macbeths weakness unfold. The following helps highlight the comparison of a made up production to meet the same theme of red curtain cinema created by Baz Luhrmann. With much use of quick cuts, anachronism and stressing of importance in unusual scenes. [402 words]
Fitzgerald’s use of symbolism and colors in The Great Gatsby is prominent in every chapter of his novel. To fully understand the meaning of his color use, a reader must recognize the situations in which these colors are used. Throughout the novel Fitzgerald uses the color green. Green has many possible interpretations, and its’ use to reveal insight into Gatsby’s character is probably the most meaningful.
King Duncan arrives with his party to Macbeth's castle, being welcomed by Lady Macbeth, without knowing what will come. She being the one who wants her husband to rightfully be king
At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a trusted soldier, who is honest and noble. Unfortunately, he meets three witches who tell him three prophecies; that he will become thane of Cawdor, that he will become king and that Banquo’s sons will become kings. These three prophecies slowly change his opinions on life and turn him into a greedy, dishonest, tyrant, full of ambition. Lady Macbeth’s thoughts change as well when she is told about the three prophecies that were told to Macbeth. In the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth is ambitious, controlling and domineering. She is the one who encourages him to kill the king, she not only encourages him, she makes all the plans herself, which shows her determination and persistence."Yet I do fear thy nature, it is too full o’th milk of human kindness. To catch the nearest way thou wouldst be great. Art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it." (Act 1, scene 5). Lady Macbeth is the force behind Macbeth’s sudden ambition and she tries to manipulate him into feeling guilty and unmanly for not following through with the murder, by using her husbands emotions, she manages to convince Macbeth to murder Duncan.
When Macbeth was off at war, and told Lady Macbeth that the witches greeted him as Thane of Cawdor, and King of Scotland before he received those titles, she was probably scheming on how to fulfill those before he returned home. Once home, they had King Duncan stay at Dunsinane. Lady Macbeth then b-tches at her husband and ridicules his masculinity in order to make him commit murder (Friedlander). Macbeth reluctantly murders Duncan, even though he wanted to wait and have it all play out without killing anyone. When he went to the well to wash off his hands he speaks of his remorse, and lady Macbeth finds out that he did not implicate the guards, so she tells him to go do it.
Macbeth begins on a bloody note: a battle rages from which Banquo and Macbeth survive bloodied, but heroes. They are the generals of Scotland; the country’s future is in their hands and in their blades. However, when one clutches once to such power, it is hard to let go. Macbeth cannot let go. Macbeth also ends on a bloody note: Macbeth’s head is cut off and presented to Malcolm, his replacement. Peace is restored through war; bloody injustice is righted finally with bloody justice. What falls between these two notes—the beginning and end of the tragedy—is a symphony of treachery, deceit, and murder. The images of nature gone awry spread all through the play—from the gardens that have turned to weeds to the horses that have turned to cannibalizing each other—for murder of one’s king is so unnatural that the entire landscape, all that is natural, is affected. Macbeth, by killing Duncan, is himself made an enemy of nature. Macbeth murders sleep, the ultimate embodiment of peace and nature, when he murders Duncan. However, the title character is not as evil as is first suggested; Macbeth is only led to his evil deeds by those who surround him. Macbeth’s only crime may be that he is weak minded and afraid. Macbeth was lured and cajoled into his mistakes by his wife and the weird sisters.
After the image of the three witches fades away, the audio of a battle is brought into focus, which sets the scene and the context within the movie. The audience is driven into a chaotic world of conflict and violence, both key elements in this adaptation of “Macbeth”.
Lady Macbeth gets a letter from Macbeth, in which she learns that the three witches had told Macbeth his destiny was to become King.
All of the scenes leading up to these two have been advancing the plot in such a way that scenes seven and eight are able to take the audience completely by surprise. For example, the supernatural plays a large role in this play and the audience knows that it will have something to do with the destiny of Macbeth and the outcome of the story. It is this prediction that makes the audience remember what the witches said to Macbeth: "The power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth."
Macbeth’s ambition to obtain power convinces him that it is his destiny to become King of Scotland, and that he should do anything to fulfill that destiny, even if it involves him committing tremendously immoral acts such as murder. After Macbeth realizes that the witches may actually speak the truth due to the second prophecy (Thane of Cawdor) becoming true, he begins to have an eerie and frightening thought of him killing his king and friend, Duncan, in order to ac...
The opening for the Red Curtain trilogy was established by this film. The opening of the films consist of a red curtain being opened much like one would in a live theatre performance. As per Baz Luhrmann’s style, it makes it clear to the viewer that they are watching a performance and not a slice of real life.

THE GREAT GATSBY: IV PARAGRAPH IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS An Entertaining experience is mostly impossible when it comes to me reading a book; but ¨The Great Gatsby¨ is an exception. One of the strongest points in the film ¨The Great Gatsby,” directed by Baz Luhrmann is the casting choice. One member of the cast who shines the most is the brilliant actor Tobey Maguire as the humble Nick Carraway.
