Term: The expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. Synonym: sarcasm

The story “Heart Of Darkness” uses Irony. One example of when the story uses irony is when Marlow is complaining about how it is hard to convey what he is trying to say accurately to his crew. Now at this point in the story it says that it had become so pitch dark that they could barely see each other.
