Poverty in America
I had heard the rumors of Detroit, “its complete disaster” or “Why would anyone want to go there?” I never knew how badly the motor city was until I visited my uncle one Christmas. I was very alarmed; there were entire streets of abandoned houses, graffiti on every building, street lights were not working, and people losing their jobs by the minute. The story of a fourteen-year-old boy who had never left the city limits of Detroit and still couldn’t read proficiently is what kept me from sleeping that night. I remember that night thinking why the system gave up on him and if he was destined to live a life of poverty.
That little story that my uncle told me scared me forever. From that point on I realized that all I wanted to do in life was to help the people who live in urban poverty every day. One day I wish to sign a bill that helps eradicate poverty from our streets, which will create a better future for the next generation.
Ever since that day, I have tried to prepare myself for a career in social work and government. I have engrossed myself in rigorous history and government classes that help me better understand Roosevelt’s New Deal and Johnson’s Great Society. Through my learn and serve

In the United States, we have a flawed education system; the local community funds the school system, so if most of the residents in a community are in poverty it is likely that their education will reflect that. Communities that suffer from poverty aren’t able to give their kids a quality education they need to get out of poverty. Dan Georgakas in his book “Detroit: I Do Mind Dying” he analyzes the activists and formation of the black workers. The first project that he investigates was “The Inner City Voice” (pag16), a revolutionary newspaper that help to denunciate and expose the injustices of the black communities. Georgakas states that this newspaper “reflected a belief that the paper’s hard-hitting and revolutionary viewpoint was an accurate expression of the dominant mood of Detroit’s black population” (pag16). These crime-ridden communities (or ghettos) are springing up all through the country, mainly in and around major metropolitan areas. These areas are the most populated, so that means that within these areas are the most people there to be influenced by the crimes committed by fellow people. In Male's reading he shows statistics that prove the fact that once the poverty factor is taken away then teen violence disappears. He later adds, “That if America wants to rid of juvenile violence than serious consideration needs to be given to the societally inflicted violence of raising three to 10 times more youth in poverty than other Western nations.” (Males p386)

Everyone knows what the word poverty means. It means poor, unable to buy the necessities to survive in today's world. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job, a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not knowing how to overcome it. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to overcome the obstacles. There are mane issues that deal with poverty and many things that can be done to stop it.
New York City is claimed to be one of the greatest cities in the world. Many are blinded by the breathtaking skyline, the endless opportunities, and the hustle and bustle of the streets. As one of the economic capitals of the world, it is surprising to hear that about 30 percent of children currently residing in New York City are living in poverty (Cheney). New York City has evolved into a city for the wealthy by eliminating inexpensive housing and jobs, forcing many families to the streets (Elliot). Many are unaware of how prevalent child poverty is. To raise awareness, the New York Times did a series of articles that followed the life of a young girl named Dasani. The article highlights the brilliance that Dasani had at such a young age and emphasizes the everyday struggles that she had to face growing up as a child in poverty. Some ways that can lower the amount of child poverty is through after school programming and through work-for-rent housing.
Poverty is a prevalent issue that many Americans face and it has been a serious problem over centuries. Every year there are people at risk of hunger. Combating poverty is not an easy task; there are many underlying issues that need to be addressed. Fortunately there are policies in place to assist with in decreasing the negative effects of poverty; however, some of the policies may cause people to become more dependent on government assistance. As a result it may cause a rise in taxes to support these policies and programs. Poverty is very common and widespread around the world. Unanswered questions that arise in regards to poverty are what can be done to resolve it, what are the causes of poverty, and is it possible to eliminate poverty entirely. Based on research and my personal experiences, government aid and housing are some resolutions to decrease poverty.
People in America often suffer from poverty and the treatment that comes with it, throughout their everyday lives. The question raised is why are poor individuals dehumanized by high structures of power? Some people with a higher income feel like they have a choice and a real recourse to justice rather than a lower class individual. They also believe that they are entitled to the world and their opinion matters because of their financial status versus someone who doesn’t have material things. Lessin’s and Deal’s film , Natasha Trethewey’s Memoir, and Bell Hooks’ excerpts, depicts that the poor are often dehumanized and neglected by structures of power, such as the government and media, because of their lack of money and education, however some of structures of power are ignorant to how the lives of poor people really are.
The problems of race and urban poverty remain pressing challenges which the United States has yet to address. Changes in the global economy, technology, and race relations during the last 30 years have necessitated new and innovative analyses and policy responses. A common thread which weaves throughout many of the studies reviewed here is the dynamics of migration. In When Work Disappears, immigrants provide comparative data with which to highlight the problems of ghetto poverty affecting blacks. In No Shame in My Game, Puerto Rican and Dominican immigrants are part of the changing demographics in Harlem. In Canarsie, the possible migration of blacks into a working/middle-class neighborhood prompts conservative backlash from a traditionally liberal community. In Streetwise, the migration of yuppies as a result of gentrification, and the movement of nearby-ghetto blacks into these urban renewal sites also invoke fear of crime and neighborhood devaluation among the gentrifying community. Not only is migration a common thread, but the persistence of poverty, despite the current economic boom, is the cornerstone of all these works. Poverty, complicated by the dynamics of race in America, call for universalistic policy strategies, some of which are articulated in Poor Support and The War Against the Poor.
This theory however as some have argued has emerged from social disorganisation theory, which sees the causes of crime as a matter of macro level disadvantage. Many Americans blame the poor for their own poverty. They stereotype the poor as lazy alcoholics or drug abusers who would rather stay in the welfare system than get an education and a job. I believe that question: Are the poor responsible for their own poverty? Can easily be debatable, first you must define who/what is considered poor. This definition alone varies amongst individuals and their opinions as well as statistics with specified numbers. Here, for the sake of not doing outside research we will consider someone who is poor to live in unruly circumstances, possibly someone without a job, someone who works very little, or although they work minimum wage just isn’t enough. We live in an entitled society where we blame everyone else for our misfortunes but ourselves.
