The festival began in 1936 at the famous West Virginia Wesleyan College professor J.E. Judson and served as a place for local strawberry growers to showcase and sell their fruits. The website timeswv states "Known as the Strawberry Capital of America, Buckhannon is situated in the center of the state and boasts a population of about 5,000. But the number of people roaming the small-town streets skyrockets every year during the third week in May, when Buckhannon welcomes approximately 100,000 people for the annual West Virginia Strawberry Festival. “Buckhannon is a classic small town in West Virginia,” Laura Meadows, the executive director of the Upshur County Convention & Visitors Bureau, said. “But then you see that small town evolve into this major event, and it’s just amazing.” Many people come out from all parts of America to a little small-town festival. This small-town festival would be going on now for 77 years this year. The little Strawberry Festival was discontinued for 5 years due to World War 11. It expanded from being just a one-day festival to be a nine-day long
The Calle Ocho festival was originally named the Open House Eight, because the two organizers wanted the festival to be an open welcome to southwest Eighth Street. With no credit, Pantín and Bermello ran into a slight problem with their idea. They needed money to start up their plan for the festival. Relying solely on the aid of friends for finance, they managed to raise $37,000 to put on a fifteen block street party. However, Pantín and Bermello still needed coverage for the new festival. Thanks to knocking on many doors, making presentations to advertisers, and receiving television coverage, they received all the publicity they needed. People from all over South Florida came to attend the Calle Ocho festival. The first festival, held in 1978, was a major success.
It started out as a moneymaking venture a rock concert, pure and simple. An attempt to duplicate or maybe even surpass the success of Monterey Pop, which attracted 50,000 people two years earlier. The Woodstock Festival was expected to attract 50,000 to 100,000 people.
Exchange Avenue in Fort Worth, Texas, is an interesting place to visit. You will learn a great deal about the history of Fort Worth and have fun in the process. There are always special events going on such as parades on Saint Patrick’s Day, Easter Egg Hunts, and photos with Santa. If you get a chance to visit Exchange Avenue, wear comfortable shoes and plan on making a day of it. There are plenty of attractions to keep you entertained for hours and many of them do not cost anything. You might even see me and my horse in a parade walking backwards. For some reason, she likes to watch the other horses and walk backwards.
“When people arrived in the morning on the 17th there was a display of horses, cattle and farm products” (Drury 807). “The first Montgomery County Agricultural Fair was held in Dayton at Swaynie’s Hotel on East First Street October 17th and 18th, 1839” (Drury 807). 1853, the state fair was held on Washington Street, the same year the county fair was held there (Drury 807) then in 1874, “the Southern Ohio Fair Association began having fairs on the Montgomery County Fairgrounds for fifteen years” (Drury 808). This set the stepping stone for many fairs in the years in counting. When individuals see the Montgomery County Fairgrounds today, it is seen as just being a place where random fairs or talent shows are held at. Not knowing its history, one could be right. Much has changed on the Montgomery County Fairgrounds; from its architecture to the people that now visit it.
earth is there to do in such a small town such as Monticello? Well, there are
Virginia found prosperity in Tobacco. Pocahontas’s husband, John Rolfe, innovated this inexpensive crop making it a stable economic source for Virginia. The high demand for tobacco produced in the New World increased the demand for the land to grow it on. This desire for land depleted the quality of the soil and also pushed Virginia’s borders further west. Virginia was predominantly protestant and the basis of its government was the assembly known as the House of Burgesses. It was a representative self government in the form of a small parliament.

The whites are mainly known for their wild and criminal ways, as they are for their Hill Billy tap dancing. West Virginia is the poorest state in the United States. Being the poorest state in the United States, the education system is not as we would expect. Without an education or available employment, the whites resorted to becoming a corrupt family to survive in the declining economy of West Virginia. Corruption within the White Family began when the father Ray White was murdered.
After reading the poem entitled “Youth”, I felt that James Wright was not only describing the life of his father but also the lives of the many other factory workers in the Ohio Valley. Many of these workers had either dropped out of school or went straight to the factories after high school, never really getting a chance to enjoy their lives as young `````adults. I think that has something to do with the title of this poem. It’s clear that Wright knew his father and the other men were not satisfied with their jobs and just chose not to speak about it. These factory workers slaved away and then came home “quiet as the evening” probably because they were content to just be relaxing at home with their families. They knew that this was their way of life and they had to do it, even if they had big dreams to someday get away. I think that Wright was also trying to make a point that these men who worked so hard every day were not valued as much as they should have been. These men did not have the education to get a higher paying job but they did have the proper skills and knowledge to work in the factories. I like that James Wright mentioned Sherwood Anderson in this poem as I enjoy his work. Anderson left his Ohio hometown for Chicago to pursuit bigger and better things because he knew if he stayed in the area, he would be unhappy. However, it is a little ironic that Anderson one day just got up and left in the middle of writing and was said to have a mental breakdown.
Coal mines have driven the state of West Virginia since the state has been established. The state of West Virginia has never been an on the top state and in my opinion never will be. Without coal or the federal governments assisting in bring jobs to the state, West Virginia will always fall short of the stick. There are a couple things you can do in West Virginia to keep you and your family afloat, you can join the military, work in corrections sense there is prison and jails all over the state, get an education which people struggle to support themselves and end up dropping out, or illegally sell prescription drugs. I’m not promoting selling drugs or in favor of it, it’s the hard truth of this state. West Virginia also leads the nation in the highest rates of overdoses from prescription drugs use (K. Loften ,2016, March 29). This all ties into what West Virginians like to do, is to blame big government for their down fall. Traditional, the people of West Virginia believe that it’s the federal government fault for the coal industry crashing in the state. The people of West Virginia beliefs system is off of coal mining, but there is a divide in the state now. You have part of the state that is for coal and the other half against coal for various reasons. Coal fuel no matter how you look at it, is harmful to the
The boardwalk is consisted of shops, arcades, and piers of rides. On the boardwalk, you will find adults, teenagers, kids, and even babies trying to have a good time. Also, there are shops located all over the place. Tattoo/piercing parlors, fast food places, curly fry’ booths, ice cream sellers, and even a mall filled with all types of shops. If you’re not into shopping, there are arcades located after every few shops. You can win prizes, spend your money, and get addicted real quickly. Although most people usually walk around, you can also ride the tramcar. The tramcar is a long yellow ride that takes people around the whole boardwalk (which by the way is two miles long!) for a few dollars. Usually, the tramcar can be heard by it’s famous saying, “Watch the tramcar please.” Other then shops and arcades; there are piers full of rides. On each pier their are rides basically for all ages and older people. There are roller coasters with and without loops, log flumes, haunted houses, carousels, mini golf courses, and even bungee jumping. For each pier you can either buy tickets which are pretty expensive, or a bracelet that will let you ride any ride you want to unlimited times.
Slavery was the main resource used in the Chesapeake tobacco plantations. Conditions in the Chesapeake region were difficult, which led to malnutrition, disease, and even death. Slaves are a cheap and abundant resource, which can be easily replaced at any time. The Chesapeake region’s tobacco industries grew and flourished on the intolerable and inhumane acts of slavery. The Chesapeake colonies of Virginia and Maryland were settled in the early 17th century.
Most of them are Christian festivals. There’s two major ones that everyone should know about. The first is Carnaval de Oruro which celebrates the Virgin of Socavon, the patron saint of miners. The statue that is unveiled at this festival overlooks a mining town, which really makes this special.
Festivals were meant to take the minds of the people off their everyday life , off the hard times and their work. Everyday life in Early Modern Europe was filled with rituals, both religious and secular. Songs and stories played an important role in their lives, although they sometimes adjusted the details of the legends and stories to fit the way they thought a certain festival should take place.
