The Unusual Friendship
How can someone friend something that isn’t alive? In the book, The Old Man and the Sea the main character, Santiago is an old fisherman who has spent a large amount of his life in the sea. Often times in the book it was stated about Santiago thinking or referring back to past times fishing or being in the sea. The fisherman went out for days on the sea, receives a great catch the ocean held, and Santiago relies on the ocean for his income.
Santiago spent a few consecutive days out on the open sea by himself. While holding the line to the marlin the water prevailed. Santiago hooked a marvelous marlin. The sea remained seemingly calm as Santiago battled with the fish. The sea also allowed Santiago to get energy and strength for his hand by giving him a fish to consume. The sea holds all past and future catches of Santiago.
Santiago is a fisherman. As an old man there aren’t many jobs available. Fishermen rely on the sea for the fish to catch, sell, or possibly eat themselves. The calmness of the sea is a major factor to be able to catch something. “Animals are reliable, many full of love, true in their actions, grateful, and loyal. Difficult standards for people to live up to,” quote by Alfred A. Montapert. Santiago doesn’t have many friends or people to rely on, and he relies close to 100% on the ocean for his welfare; meaning his life.
Santiago relies on the ocean as a person would rely on a friend. The ocean holds; practically stores his future. The ocean is big, important, and valuable place for Santiago. Whether Santiago is relying on the ocean for its steadiness or the ability of giving him a fish. Santiago has a friendly relationship with the sea.
