Beauty?

What affects our perception of beauty? When we ask this question we tend to receive answers like models, movie stars and so on. And yes, you could say these answers are correct - but only partially. In our society our standards of beauty changes with the media. We as women are presented with this idea of a “perfect body” that revolves around our everyday lives through magazines, fashion shows and billboards that showcase, well, flawlessness.

I ask you this, what does it mean to be beautiful?

In 2015, a social media survey reached some startling conclusions. Women are 50% more likely to say something negative about their body image rather than positive and four out of five negative beauty comments made by women were about themselves. These negative comments are made because of the beauty standards. Women believe that they aren’t good enough because they don’t look like Victoria’s Secret Models or this “ideal standard of beauty”. These are the questions the media push us to ask. This is the reason why we are conscious about our body. We no longer feel comfortable in our own skin as we believe we aren’t perfect just because we don’t replicate the appearance of some model. They begin to think that they aren’t beautiful, or too fat, too different. The dissatisfaction with one’s body image can lead to depression and having low self-esteem. I personally stand with the women who are constantly bombarded with standards, those who are facing the challenges of going through with these expectations and living in a society idealized by an image of perfection.
