Student debt is rising. These days, people are still trying to pay off their college debt at the age of 40. In college, trying to balance a good GPA to keep up your scholarship, a good job, and still have time to enjoy yourself is no easy task. However, being exploited by your boss for an internship that is supposedly going to give you experience, is unacceptable. In the wake of an economy where college can cost $65,000 a year, one would think that employers would pay a student for an internship, especially since many internships are full time. According to the Labor Department rules, the employer cannot immediately benefit from the student’s activities and training must be for the benefit of the student. While these rules are in place, they are evidently hurting the intern. A common argument is that the simple fact that students are getting exposure, that should be a gold mine to them. Many people say being emerged in that that work environment should be more important than money to a college student. On the contrary, in my opinion, college interns are still being exploited into doing work for no pay. So, in theory, a college intern is doing mindless, unnecessary work for free, that is not helping he or she with their future career goals. However, opponents argue the internship, “looks good on a resume.” As mentioned in, “Unpaid Internships Should be Illegal”, a regular summer job in the intern’s field of study would be just as, if not more beneficial. Nonetheless, to employers, they could easily just hire an intern to do the work for free.
