In the beginning of my first semester at Claflin University, I did not understand the reasoning behind the University 101 and 102 courses. However, as the time progressed, I learned to understand the significance of the courses. The University courses were created to guide students through their first year in college, but there are some positive and negative aspects of it. Although University 102 is uninteresting at times, I admire the fact that my instructors try to inform the students about internship opportunities and scholarships. Most professors do not seek out scholarship and other opportunities for their students, but my University 102 instructors stress the importance of applying for internships and scholarships. First of all, I feel as if the University 102 class should only be scheduled on Mondays because I do not understand the logic behind attending the class three times per a week. Secondly, I disagree with the mandatory community service due to the fact that it is unnecessary and my grade should not be determined by my good deeds. As a freshman in college, it is already difficult to adjust to the college lifestyle and the mandatory community service is overbearing. Community service should be optional because in the real word, nobody will force a person to give back to their community. Therefore, community service is ineffective if someone is forced to participate in order to receive a good grade in University 102. Overall, I could not have asked for a better University 102 class. In spite of all the misunderstanding and conflicts, my University 102 is the best because we are always supporting one another. My professors are demanding, but it is obvious that they want all of the students to succeed in college. Imagine a typical teen, they have a job, homework, sports, and other extracurriculars. They don’t get home till late at night and they are exhausted. This teen can take much more and thankfully they are about to graduate, but wait the school wants them to fit in one hundred of community service into that schedule in order to graduate. How on earth is this busey teen suppose to do that with all that they have going on? Students should not have to do one hundred hours of community service to graduate high school.
At the beginning of this class, students were warned about coming into this class with a certain mindset. Students were warned not to have the preconception of thinking that COMS 201 would teach them how to manipulate others into doing what they wanted. Guilty of this mindset I attempted to trick myself into thinking that I did not have that mindset. Getting through the first few modules on theory was difficult. I remember asking myself, “What did I sign up for?”. After getting through the first few modules I began to enjoy what I was learning, so much so, I caught myself referencing what I had learned in COMS 201 in other aspects of my life. This school should not require 100 hours of community service as a graduation requirement because of the busy lives of teenagers, the pressure of graduation, and loss of enthusiasm for community service. Schools should encourage community service but this is not the way to do it.
AP Seminar was my first experience in an environment that was completely dedicated to learning, without the fixation on the letter grades that ‘determine’ success. My peers were my teachers. As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. In COL 101 I have learned many new things about college. Since this is my first semester at college I did not really know where everything was. This class really helped me to learn new things about myself, including what resources are available to me, what my plan for the future is, and the many changes I have endured during this course.
Lastly, graduation is a big part of anyone’s life, and disallowing it can be devastating, especially for a very small problem. If a student works countless hours getting straight A’s every year, they should not be denied graduation because they didn’t work service hours at their local laundromat. Forcing community service hours is completely redefining what graduation is, since it used to be that the student excelled enough in each subject to get the passing grades, which isn’t the case when students are concurrently forced to do worthless
During this semester in middle school principal and practices we spent time doing workshops, which gave us a chance to teach our peers and learn from our peers. We learnt quite a bit during this semester, from Deb as well as from the textbook. We learnt how to teach tweens, what we can do to push the students, engage the student and how we as pre-service teacher and future teachers can improve in our classroom, yet there are still some unanswered questions to be answered as well as some questions that still need to be discussed. This semester the class has had countless opportunities to learn and question what we are learning and ask question that we still have.
Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
I was given the assignment was to reflect on certain subjects in the class English twelve that is through Madison Area Technical College but it was at taught at Deerfield high school. It was a class that taught me more than I thought it was going to teach me. It really has prepared me for college and got me sort of used to the college reading level and writing level. University, to me, is a totally different concept from high school, where teachers, expert in their specific field, would introduce you to the beauty of it. Yet, after my two-and-half-year college life, I gradually come to realize that although professors at college are good at teaching, the most important thing I have learned is to learn by oneself.

During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas. Community service is beneficial in a number of ways. The first reason community service should be mandatory is because for years service learning has been closely correlated with scholastic achievement. The majority of students who engage in community service activities tend to perform slightly better in school than those who do not do any sort of service education. Community service gives students the possibility to take what they do outside the classroom and implement it with the learning they do inside the classroom. Doing service work is a prominent route for students to check what they’ve learned and even add new knowledge. Some would argue that community service is not correlate with scholastic achievement because it adds additional work and stress on a student.
