“Only God can judge us, forget the haters.” Miley Cyrus. In the play, The Crucible, it is full of liars, corruption, traders, and backstabbers. The play is about the Salem Witch trials, in Salem, Massachusetts in the year 1692. The play’s main protagonist is John Proctor, a holy and well respected man who does not believe people are who they say they are. The play’s main antagonist is Abagail Williams, the niece of the town’s minster, an unholy woman who is in love with John Proctor. There are many themes in this play but I believe that there is one universal theme. The Universal theme of the play is, people should never turn their heads away from the truth because the people of Salem are ignoring the courts wrong doing to save their own skin.
In Act III of the crucible it is obvious that Danforth, the judge, knows the truth about the girls, after Mary warren and John Proctor confess it. “She swears now that she never saw Satan.” (Arthur Miller 188). Danforth being a high ranking judge and having a high reputation, he does not want to be known as the man that sent 19 innocent people to their graves so he continues to press Mary Warren for another lie. At the end of Act I the girls are yelling out names of women who they want to accuse of being witches and Mrs. Putnam goes along with the lie that Goody Osburn was a witch because she wants to believe that it was witchcrafts fault her children died, “I knew it, Goody Osburn were midwife to me three times…” (Arthur Miller 162). And many people were accusing other people of witchcraft because they wanted their lands, it was documented that Thomas Putnam, Mrs. Putnam’s husband, accused people so he could get their land.
