Reflecting on my Marshals Service Internship

Final Reflection The Unites States Marshals service has been a very beneficial internship. The Marshals were all very nice and informative. They had me taking care of the front desk. More days than not, there was filing of medical papers for the year 2015 and the year 2016. Some people have a large stack of papers because they are always needing medical attention while in custody. The next thing I do is answer the phone. This happens to be one of the more interesting tasks. You really never know who it is going to be or what they are going to say. The three objectives are: to understand the various ways that criminals are identified, apprehended, detained, and treated in our criminal justice system, to understand the functions of the various components of the criminal justice system, from the police and the courts to the prison system, and being familiar with fundamental data manipulation tools and methodologies. The first objective was achievable to an extent. I learned this being informed by individuals on the task force. The task force has files about people out on warrants. They track these individuals down and once found they detain them by arresting them. They bring them back to the Marshals office to hold them in the cells. Apprehending an individual seems very difficult. From gaining information from the individuals on the task force, people are hard to find and sometimes are very good at fleeing officers. As an example, a man is out on a warrant and has been for years. They finally found the man, except he is so old he is in a nursing home almost dying. The second objective is to understand the functions of the various components of the criminal justice system. The only component I was able to really learn about was the courts. How I accomplished this objective was by attending court with the Marshal deputies. The deputies transport the prisoner from the cell to the court room. Once there, the handcuffs and chain are taken off. They are led to their seat where the Marshals surround them. One of side of the room is the prosecutor and on the other is the defendant. When the judge arrives everyone stands and then is told to be seated. Depending on the type of hearing, the judge will ask different things and then hear both sides. The initial hearing is when the judge decides if the defendant can afford counsel or if one needs to be appointed. Once this is done, the prosecutor reads off everything the defendant is being charges with. The defendant has to acknowledge understanding what he is charged with.
