My document is going to analyze the “United States Declaration of Independence” which was published on July 4th, 1776. It was written by Thomas Jefferson and adopted by the Second Continental Congress, states the reasons the British colonies of North America sought independence in July of 1776. The declaration opens with a preamble describing the document's necessity, in explaining why the colonies have overthrown their ruler, and chosen to take their place as a separate nation, and to be independent in the world. The United States of America only has a little over two hundred years of history, but it is the most powerful country in this world. I want to study what could cause this country with such a short history to become so powerful. This declaration is the beginning of the U.S.A. All people are equal. Nothing can violate certain freedoms and rights. I know in the United states history, some minority groups like black and Asian used to be supressed. They spent their lives as slaves without freedom. The rights include to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Government should be a place to help its citizen but not violate them. When a government fails to protect those rights, it is the duty of the people to overthrow that government. This declaration is a good lead. People in this land should establish a government that is designed to protect their rights. Governments are rarely overthrown, and should not be overthrown for trivial reasons. In this case, a long history of abuses led the colonists to overthrow a tyrannical government. I think this declaration was a big encouragement to support the revolution. Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743 in Virginia (Whitehouse.gov, n.d., para. 2). He came from a rich family, which afforded him to be very well educated. Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence; served as minister of France, governor of Virginia, secretary of state during George Washington’s presidency, and vice-president under John Adams (Thomas Jefferson, n.d., para. 1.) He was also the third president of the United States. Jefferson was an avid opponent of royal ruling and the suppression of individual’s rights, “…I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man” (Whitehouse.gov, n.d., para. 1).
Both are pushing for equality, and for citizens to embrace their natural human rights. For the declaration, its equality of the American citizens against the British; and for Americans to have their natural rights of free speech, freedom of religion, etc. Throughout the declaration, there is much polarization against the British Empire based on how the British were oppressing the American Citizens. "In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury" (America In Class, 5), a closing line in the Declaration of Independence, dictates how with every act of Oppression the British has put forth onto the American Citizens (For example, with the unreasonable search and seizures, " He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance" (America In class 3), showing how the Americans lost their right of privacy to the British), and how when the Americans try to exercise their right to speech; they are harassed and punished even more. The purpose was to justify the revolution of the “new” colonies. Many of the people were excited for the plan. The American people had thrived for the freedom, and to establish the government for themselves. The Declaration has three parts to the document. The first part was the Declaration of Natural Rights. The American Revolution was not only a battle between the British and the colonists; it was a historical movement that brought about new ways of thinking. The ideas of liberty and equality began to be seen as essential to the growth of the new nation. The separation of the American colonies from the British Empire occurred for a number of reasons.
