Assessing Technology: A Groundswell Perspective

According to Groundswell there are five questions to assess a technology. The questions are:
1. "Does it enable to connect with each other in new ways?"(Li & Bernoff, 2011, Pg. 36)
2. "Is it effortless to sign-up for?"(Li & Bernoff, 2011, Pg. 36)
3. "Does it shift power from institution to people?"(Li & Bernoff, 2011, Pg. 37)
4. "Does the community generate enough content to sustain itself?"(Li & Bernoff, 2011, Pg. 37)
5. "Is it an open platform that invites partnership?"(Li & Bernoff, 2011, Pg. 37) In regards to question one, Linkedin allows user to connect in new ways because unlike Facebook with is used for simple communication and lighthearted fun, Linkedin is a positive and professional way for individuals to promote themselves and research and find jobs in their surrounding areas. Linkedin is a combination of a resume and a get to know me all merged into one convenient location. Linkedin like many social media sites requires an account to use it services. The sign up process is very easy like most social media accounts (name, email, and password). Yes, I feel Linkedin does transfer power from the institution to its users. Many of my first year instructors discussed it and encouraged us to create one, so I did. At first I didn't get the appeal, but know I really find it useful. Linkedin has allowed me to find possible companies to apply to for since they provide you with organizations that are looking for employees in a designated field or based off prior work experience/skills and it has also provided me with a modern networking tool since many day to day activities are moving to digital sources. I definitely found Linkedin a great resource to have, the only negative is, sometimes I get sent weird business plans from people I have never heard of, but overall it's a great site and resource to use and
