When confronted with the age-old question: “are humans innately good or bad?” many people say neither, that a person’s character is molded in the environment in which they are raised. While assumptions behind the stereotypes that children raised in poor environments may be mean-spirited and aggressive, compared to the pretentious children raised in a wealthy environment are usually true, there is a science behind parenting. The environment in which children are raised has a lasting impact on their personalities. Psychologists believe that there are four difference patterns of parenting styles. Children who are parented in this style are neglected by their parents (Impact). It’s as if they have no parents. Some fail to learn to care for themselves, with tragic consequences, and some manage to survive. Almost all children who grow up with uninvolved parents have the worst developmental outcomes of any of the parenting patterns. They are aggressive and hostile from a young age (as young as three), and continue this behavior into the adolescence (Impact). Uninvolved parenting sets the child up for failure in life, as they have low self-esteem and are not as intelligent as their peers. They do not have self-control and are usually selfish (Impact). Parents who use this style are moderately demanding, of their children, asking the children for their point of view. They preach open communication, acceptance of a person for who they are, and encouragement. Children who are raised in this environment are found to be the best adjusted for life. The balance of control and freedom given to them by their parents enables them to be self-reliant, intelligent, and socially responsible (Gross). Authoritative parenting that lacks physical punishment produces the most positive results with the fewest problems in the world. They score better on tests, have better relationships, and are happier with themselves. This is not only true at a young age, but the traits continue throughout the rest of their lives. This parenting style typically comes from middle class families
