Understanding of Scholarly Writing
Different types of writing require different levels of research and rational. The quality of writing it takes to complete a dissertation for a doctorate degree requires a deep level of critical thinking and self-evaluation of one’s own personal beliefs in order to avoid allowing bias to interfere with the outcome. Scholarly works also come in different forms, gaining the ability to decide which works fit the criteria needed by the author to create his or her own scholarly work is imperative. Richard Nordquist wrote in his article “The term academic writing refers to the forms of expository and argumentative prose used by university students, faculty, and researchers to convey a body of information about a particular subject. Generally, academic writing is expected to be precise, semi-formal, impersonal, and objective.”(Nordquist, 2017) Not always an easy task to accomplish. Being able to write a paper and being able to write a paper supported by scholarly, factual sources are very different. Quality takes time and honest effort by the writer.
How does One Recognize Quality?
Scholarly writing is high quality and should reflect knowledge of content, a well thought out and cohesive argument, but mostly it should reflect a deep analysis of the topic in question. It should illustrate a higher level of thinking and should provide a well-balanced synthesis of both sides of an argument. The main idea should be interesting, important and meaningful to the reader. The author should use punctuation, spelling, and grammar that make writing consistent and easy to read and well organized.

Through quality academic writing, the author has the opportunity to communicate his or her perspective on an academic issue. It is important to understand that a group of people can be exposed to the same information, but their interpretation of that information can differ person to person. Therefore, academic writing is way to organize and illuminate one’s personal and individualized understanding of specific topic. The authors of the article Basic tips about writing a scholarly manuscript suggest that it is important to keep the main idea the focus of the document (Lambert, 2003). Often new writers make the mistake of writing about several topics and losing site of the main topic, in turn confusing the reader and causing them to lose interest.
