Drug abuse is known as a disorder and is the habit of taking addictive or illegal drugs. When doing too many drugs, it causes the brain to change and causes drug addiction which creates a feeling of need and dependency on drug use. Although others would like to believe that the drug user should just change their behavior, they don't realize that even with the will to do so, it is quite difficult. Since one time is usually all it takes to get you hooked on a drug, the amount of people doing them have started to rise. During the year of 2013, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime got a total estimate of 246 million people worldwide that were found to be using drugs(“2015 World Drug Report…”). In the same year, the National Institute on …show more content…
Drug abuse found that 24.6 million Americans had been using illicit drugs(“Nationwide Trends”). The number of drug abusers have been increasing as more people fall into addiction and as it it used at a young age. Although it may prove difficult for many, there are various types of treatments that are provided for those who seek help. The term drug addiction is stated to be a chronic relapsing brain disease that causes an uncontrollable urge for drug use even when it becomes damaging to the body.
According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, brain images studies have shown changes in areas of the brain that effect judgment, memory, decision making, and behavior control(“Understanding Addiction”). It is believed that due to these changes, it is able to explain the rash behavior of those with an addiction. There are many factors that appear when discussing the susceptibility each person has to addiction. Some of the common risk factors are whether or not they had aggressive behavior during their childhood, had little parental supervision, or were living at poverty level. A person's genetics is another risk inducer and as stated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse it counts for about 40 to 60% of how affected the person is able to get by addiction(“Drug Abuse and Addiction”). Drug addiction is seen as a disease and like most diseases, there are many types of treatment for …show more content…
it. When trying to stop drug addiction, one of the methods to help stop is to take medication. There are different types but before taking medication, the person must first go through detoxification. This is when the drug user stops taking drugs in order to get all of the toxins out of the bloodstream. As written by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, it states that the use of medications while going through detoxification was about 80% when a 2014 study was made in treatment facilities(“Treatment Approaches…”). One of the most common medications for drug use are methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone. The methadone and buprenorphine are used to fight back withdrawal symptoms and help reduce cravings while the job of the naltrexone is to block off the receptors the brain receives from drugs. A newer version of buprenorphine is being made to become longer lasting and according to Colette Bouchez, award-winning medical journalist, even a new vaccine is in the process of being created that blocks the effects of a drug, like cocaine, starting in the blood rather than the brain(Bouchez). All of the medication that is taken is meant to reduce the need for drug use but there are other ways to fight addiction. Rather than medication, therapy is used to mainly help with cravings and accepting a life without drugs. There are different types of therapies such as individual, group, behavioral, motivational, and family therapy. The one most needed depends on each person's addiction and personal need. When going through therapy, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in order for it to be of any help, the drug user cannot stop going in less than 90 days(“Principles of Effective Treatment”). There are more people that dropout on the treatment rather than completing it due to drug relapse and of other problems that happen . Although therapy is useful on it’s own, it is known to be the most successful when combined with medication. A study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that when both used at the same time, it leads to a more continuous and successful recovery(“MAT overview”). This method is also used to help drug use disorders. The time that drug abuse occurs is usually during the teenage years. There are various reasons as to why they do this such as them attempting to fit in with the others who do it, as a way to show rebellion, and even just experimentation. Although the bigger reasons as to why they do it is to be able to feel better as an escape from stress, depression, or pain and overall to just feel good due to the high effect drugs give. A research done by the National Institute on Drug Abuse has found that half of high school students would have taken an illegal drug by the time that they are seniors(“Introduction”). Since this is the time of adolescence for a student, the brain would still be in development. Doing drugs during this time, according to the Science and Management of Addictions, would stand in the way of developing skills and would take the decisions related to drug use and fix them into the brain over time(“The Effects of Drugs…”). This would cause it to turn into a habit and because it is during adolescence, it could last throughout the rest of their lives. To stop drug use at a young age, one of the options would be to try to prevent drug use from happening at all.
This can be done in various ways such as getting parents to be more alert of their teen, getting them into activities of their interests, or have discussions on peer pressure with them but one method that has seemed to work so far has been drug abuse prevention programs. A study found by the National Institute on Drug Abuse was able to discover that it has been scientifically proven to show positive results and has been able to lessen the use of illicit drugs in youth(“Preventing Drug Abuse…”). There are three different types of programs which are universal, selective, and indicated. In the universal program it speaks about protection and risk factors to children in a place like a school or community while in a selective program it focuses on children who are at high risk and those in the indicated program are those who are already using drugs. One research done by the American Psychological Association found a five year study of a total of 48 funded community substance abuse prevention programs that stated a drop of 10% in drug use near the end of the program and a 22% drop a couple months afterwards(“Researchers examine success…”). As they went along with these programs, they recorded that the boys had a more positive reaction to interaction with their peers while the girls responded better to behavioral life
skills. When a person does drugs, it can turn into a habit they can’t easily escape from or maybe a sense of relief they want to have. Instead of getting smaller, the number of drugs being used has been growing. People of all ages can be affected but the younger people start first the most. Even with the numbers growing, there is research being done and treatments to help.
Satel says, “Addiction does indeed discriminate, it chooses those who are bad at delaying gratification” (2). Those who simply cannot resist the instant relief or euphoria are more likely to become addicts. Addiction also preys on those who do not possess the proper skills for gauging consequences. Those suffering from this trait are unable to look ahead at the true horror that awaits them at the end of the long dark tunnel. Another trait that increases the risk of addiction is impulsivity. Impulsive people have issues controlling themselves, and they often make quick decisions that were not through. Impulsivity characteristics often go hand in hand with the previously stated traits, making it one of the hardest to overcome. While personality traits may be genetic or just how we are predisposed, drug use often alters ones entire being, including these traits. So, who is to say if the traits listed above were not birthed from the very womb of drug use itself.

Typically, almost everyone in the world has taken drugs at some point in their life. Whether it be over the counter medication or prescription drugs. People get sick, they have illness, allegories, sexually transmitted diseases or other aches and pains. As you may already know, there is medication for each aforementioned problem. This is called drug use, which is using drugs for its intended purpose. However, the real dilemma happens when people began to misuse and abuse drugs.
Lanthrop’s argument that substance abuse is caused by both your environment and genetics is very intriguing. Not only does Lanthrop use strong medical and statistical evidence in his statement, he uses personal experience. By using his personal experience in his argument, Lanthrop establishes credibility or ethos with his readers as well as emotional appeal or pathos. By establishing credibility and appealing to the emotional side of readers Lanthrop effectively argues that substance abuse is impacted by a person’s environment and their genetic code. However, out of the two main causes of substance abuse, genetics has the greatest impact on one’s substance abuse issue.
Drug abuse is part of everyday life, most of us know someone who is or was abusing drug at some point. A way to simplify a difficult time in our life, we find an exit in a product that numbs our brain to the surrounding. People find addiction through drugs, activities and action that creates chemical reaction within our bodies. Whether you love jumping off the empire state building or inject yourself with a drug, you are looking for a high that your body enjoys. The body creates chemicals which stop our self-control. According to the CDC website, “Deaths from drug overdose have been rising steadily over the past two decades and have become the leading cause of injury death in the United States.” (Birnbaum HG, web).
Drug problems may be curbed by involving your kids in avenues like sports, the arts, or aspects of your work which are of interest to them. Family lisfe is also very important in shaping a young person's attitudes towards drugs.
Addiction, like other diseases, has the tendency to be genetic. “Addictive drugs induce adaptive changes in gene expression in the brain’s reward regions” (Bevilacqua and Goldman 359–361). The disease is also influenced by environmental conditions and behavior. Addiction genes can be passed down through family members of many generations. If one has addiction in their genes tries a drug and someone who does not have addiction in their genes and tries the same drug, it is more likely that the person with the gene will become addicted over the one without. Environmental conditions can also be a factor because someone’s lifestyle could contribute to addiction. Factors such as stress and peer pressure can influence drug or alcohol abuse. Behavior can also contribute to addiction because if a person’s attitude is obsessive and they have an addictive personality, they could become addicted to a substance. In “Addiction is Not a Disease” Daniel Akst explains actual diseases are Alzheimer’s and Schizophrenia, not addiction. For example, Akst mentions that “addicts tend to quit when the going gets hard” (Akst.) He also clarifies that addicts have the choice to have that extra drink or those extra pills every
It is important to consider how addiction to drugs begins. “Genetics accounts for approximately half of an individual’s vulnerability to addiction, including effects of the environment on gene function and expression” (Volkow). This basically means that once a person is exposed to drugs, they are more likely to become addicted to drugs after that exposure if their genes make them more vulnerable to addiction. Consequently, not every person who is exposed to drugs will develop an addiction because they do not have the genetic make-up that makes them an addictive person, meaning that: “…predisposing genes interact with [exposure to drugs] and other environmental factors to create vulnerability” (Volkow). People cannot change their genetic make-up to prevent themselves from becoming addicted to drugs. They can only limit their exposure to a drug filled...
Drug abuse dates as far back as the Biblical era, so it is not a new phenomenon. “The emotional and social damage and the devastation linked to drugs and their use is immeasurable.” The ripple of subversive and detrimental consequences from alcoholism, drug addictions, and addictive behavior is appalling. Among the long list of effects is lost productivity, anxiety, depression, increased crime rate, probable incarceration, frequent illness, and premature death. The limitless consequences include the destruction to personal development, relationships, and families (Henderson 1-2). “Understandably, Americans consider drug abuse to be one of the most serious problems” in the fabric of society. And although “addiction is the result of voluntary drug use, addiction is no longer voluntary behavior, it’s uncontrollable behavior,” says Alan Leshner, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (Torr 12-13).
To begin with, the people who are addicted to drugs are hard to get rid of taking. Normally, a lot of people assumed that because of the lack of moral principles and willpower, the drug abusers cannot stop abusing through changing their behavior (NIH 2012). But in the real world, giving up abusing takes more than strongly will, because the ways of brain is changed by drugs that enhance the compulsive drug abuse. As a result, it is difficult of drug users to stop abusing the drugs.
Perhaps most substance abuse starts in the teen years when young people are susceptible to pressure from their peers. One of the main concerns when dealing with substance abuse is the long term problems with substance such as addiction, dependency and tolerance. The physical state of an individual, who is addicted to a substance, will deteriorate over a long period of time. This is due to the chemicals that are being put into an individual body. One of the most important aspects of the effect of substance abuse on society includes ill health, disease, sickness, and in many cases death. The impact of substance abuse not only affects individuals who abuse substances but it affects our economy. Our government resources are negatively impacted by individual who abuse substances. According to (Lagliaro 2004) the implication of drug users extend far beyond the user, often damaging their relationships with their family, community, and health workers, volunteer and wider
Humans are environmentally and genetically predisposed to developing motivated addictive behavior. Addiction is a brain disease and a behavior disorder. All behaviors are choices. Choices that adolescences make at a young age directly affect the outcomes of their futures. Many factors contribute to an adolescence, becoming an addict or exhibiting drug seeking behavior.
The use of drugs is a controversial topic in society today. In general, addicts show a direct link between taking drugs and suffering from their effects. People abuse drugs for a wide variety of reasons. In most cases, the use of drugs will serve a type of purpose or will give some kind of reward. These reasons for use will differ with different kinds of drugs. Various reasons for using the substance can be pain relief, depression, anxiety and weariness, acceptance into a peer group, religion, and much more. Although reasons for using may vary for each individual, it is known by all that consequences of the abuse do exist. It is only further down the line when the effects of using can be seen.
Drug addiction is a very big problem in today’s society. Many people have had their lives ruined due to drug addiction. The people that use the drugs don’t even realize that they have an addiction. They continue to use the drug not even realizing that their whole world is crashing down around them. Drug addicts normally lose their family and friends due to drug addiction.
Drug abuse has been a hot topic for our society due to how stimulants interfere with health, prosperity, and the lives of others in all nations. All drugs have the potential to be misapplied, whether obtained by prescription, over the counter, or illegally. Drug abuse is a despicable disease that affects many helpless people. Majority of those who are beset with this disease go untreated due to health insurance companies who neglect and discriminate this issue. As an outcome of missed opportunities of treatments, abusers become homeless, very ill, or even worst, death.
