I once submitted a terrible paper. The writing was awkward, the conclusions were weak, the research was sloppy. At the time I was frustrated and tired, disappointed in myself for having allowed procrastination and laziness to defeat me. To my shock and amazement, I received the top grade in the class. For my terrible essay to receive that grade, it had to stand out from all the other papers the instructor had to evaluate. My classmates must have turned in some truly awful writing for mine to be a higher quality, but that is not uncommon.
Ask any of the poor unfortunates who are tasked with grading undergraduate papers. The vast majority of student papers are unreadable rambling garbage. When writing a term paper, you are not competing with the great essayists of the world. Your output is being compared to that of your peers.
Of course you should write the best paper you can, always. Work hard, do the research, write a couple of drafts. But the most important thing you can do in writing an essay is to have a clear, easy to follow structure. You could have the best ideas in the world, but if you cannot state them clearly you will not get a good grade.

As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
I have never been the strongest writer. To be honest I was nervous about this course and how much writing was involved in it. With that being said, the research paper I wrote on James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues”, was very challenging me. I am overall satisfied with my essay but feel if I had practiced better time management and spent more time analyzing it, the result would have been a more detailed and better organized essay. I put my essay in the Successful category, although I did meet the course outcomes in my paper, it contains grammatical errors and does not flow as well as an Exemplary paper would.
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
This year in College Writing one has been very interesting. I understand now that there is a lot more that goes into writing a paper than I first thought. I especially realize this when I look back at one of my first papers which was the descriptive essay titled, "The Hidden Truth."
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
Over this entire course, we have written around 5 papers. This does not include this paper. Each of these papers were very different from each other. The types of papers varied. There was a new type of paper to write every 2 weeks usually. The papers I wrote were good but had much room for improvement in my opinion. I examined each paper after it was graded
This is one of the best essays I ever wrote. It was also the easiest and quickest to write because I had fun doing it. It was amazing how much my writing improved when I decided to have fun with it. "Forced" writing never turns out well no matter how skilled the writer is.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I stayed after class to arrange meetings with all three of my essays and showed up early each time. In which I read over comments made before hand and digested them myself and walked in with an idea on how to make my paper better, answer questions you may have had towards my paper, and had questions on what I could do to make my paper better. While my work in the class my not have reflected an A I feel my time and participation are well on the track to excellence in the world of academic writing. “Once a person is determined to help themselves, there is nothing that can stop them.” (Nelson Mandela) I am determined to hone my skills of writing and make an impact where ever I grace the strokes of a pen or keyboard.

I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
This class has been significantly more difficult than any other English class I have taken all throughout high school. This semester, I have been introduced to different styles of writing that I have never been exposed to before. This class has been stressful, but also fun. With using all of the resources I have been given throughout the semester, I have been able to do my best to further my writing abilities and hopefully only continue to grow them as I finish my later years in college. Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
