The question “Does loss cause people to re-assess their values and reconsideration of what is important and one’s life?” means several different things to me based on the poem from Anne Bradsheet. In some of the verses in the poem she said that she could not be sad that her home was destroyed because God had her a home in Heaven. At first it seemed like she had a struggle with materialism and she was mourning the loss of her home, then later on she discovered that he had a much better plan for her and the family. I believe that sometimes it takes something bad to cause someone to think about what values are really important to them. They realize that material things can be replaced and family cannot. People tend to step back and look at the tragic loss of their possessions in a whole different matter when it comes to material things and family. Material things in life can be replaced but family cannot. When things tend to happen because of a tragic event such as a house fire people re-access what is really a value to them and what is a possession. In this poem Anne really explains what is more important to her. At first she is upset because her home and possessions are gone and she can no longer enjoy them but then she realizes that God has a better plan. The house fire helped her understand and draw a line between what she values and considers important to her. Her having her family and a place in heaven is what she finds is the most important to her in life “There’s wealth enough; I need no more. Farewell, my pelf; farewell, my store” (Bradstreet 51-52).She understands that all the material things can be
