One of the major dilemma that is face by the college freshmen is to decide a major. In the journal of nacanada stated that, “There are 20 to 50% of students entering in the college with undecided major and 50 to 70% of students change their major at least once after initial enrollment.” Undecided major is defined as the specific area of study that did not determined by the students. Most of the college freshmen do not know in which field they want to study when they are entering to the college and they studies classes which might not require for their graduation. Furthermore, some students who are changing their major after entering into the college after a year or after a graduation; these situations resulting into increase cost of education and delays their graduation. Students, who are with undecided major, has a higher risk of attrition. Students with undecided major have a lack of knowledge about their major, their career, and their own interest in a work place, so students develop prolong indecisiveness characteristics; Most of the students develops laziness because they developed mentality about liberal attitude towards their major. Ohio state University conducted 25-year observational study of 19,000 students who were not decided a major. Furthermore, 22%, 31%, and 43% of these students were with completely undecided major, tentatively decided, and various ideas about major were not ready to decide respectively. When someone is told they must have their mind made up, it hinders their creative mind to other ideas. For example, when I was shopping for my first car, I was told to consider my desires beforehand in order to make the process easier. When I decided I was definitely set on a black car, I would find something wrong with every other car I tested out. This is similar to attending college in the beginning. Going into college, it is suggested you choose a major. This is a difficult decision if a student is not sure of what career pathway they are interested in going down. Although “Undeclared” is an option, it is far more common for one to choose a major then just decide to change it later on. I feel as though it is important to keep options open, and young children should be able to keep their career options open
When students are in high school, is the end, they are finally free after 13 years of schooling, but for many people graduating from high school is just the beginning. After graduating from high school, students are faced with the difficult decision of whether or not to continue on with their education. And if they do decide to continue on with their education, what form of education will they choose. There are a variety of different options open to students each accompanied by their own pros and cons. These options include; no school, 4-year university, or 2-year community college.
Going to college gives students the chance to step out of their comfort zone, try new things, and discover who they are while pursuing a degree that may, or may not, interest them. In today’s world if a student drops out of college society assumes they are unintelligent, while in reality they could have come to the realization that being amazing at a trade job is better than being mediocre at a desk job. There has to be a way for students to want to finish college and find what they are learning interesting. If something doesn’t change, the system of postsecondary education will become a thing of the
Have you ever wondered whether or not there was any correlation between gender and college major? We conducted a survey consisting of 105 people (51 males and 54 females) and of those people, 34.3% (17 males and 19 females) did not think that there was a direct correlation between the two. Our goal was to see if gender did in fact influence one’s choice of major, or if it had no influence at all. After proper surveying and thorough analysis of literature, we found that both female and male students generally have college majors concentrated in certain areas and industries.

It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
In today 's society, there are multitudes of pressure high school students face. One of the biggest pressures put on high school students is the decision of going to college. From the moment students enter into a secondary education, they are constantly asked questions about their future plans. Teachers and parents expect students to perform their best, while giving them no chance but to look towards college. In some cases, however, college might not be the answer. Other options exist as alternate avenues after high school, however, these are not as often expressed as the idea of a four year university. Although a college education and degree is most often more impactful than a high school diploma, there is too much pressure
These eighteen year olds who had virtually no say in what they wanted to study in high school are now ask “ what is your major?” or better yet “what do you want to do for the rest of your life?” This is a big question, and most have no idea what they want to do. So, in a state of confusion they instinctively choose to study in a field that will benefit them economically when they graduate. Is this what a higher education means, to go through college fixed on the money? Or, is there a deeper meaning to it all, if so how can it be obtained? These are the sort of questions that need to be asked when considering going to college.
Within recent decades, college has become a more easily available path than it has been for the past generations. In a current news release, The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that, “Of the 2.9 million youth age 16 to 24 who graduated from high school between January and October 2014, about 68.4 percent were enrolled in college in October” (BLS Economic News Release from April 2015). When a student graduates high school, most of them intend to continue on to college. They have the idea that, while there, they can break away from all the general classes and just focus on what they want to learn. However, for almost all students, they find that this is not the reality. Just like high school, they find that they have to take approximately two years in general studies in order to attend and graduate with the major of their choice. General education classes should not be required because a majority of the information learned has already been covered in past years. Most of the courses do not benefit a student 's major, and the total amount of required hours for these classes can become a big waste of time and money.
Further education gives students an opportunity to develop skills, talents, and discover new interests. It teaches students how to examine, evaluate, and compare arguments with different people. Many young students are undecided about their career path when they think about college. Some people are not ready to decide their majors because they have not received enough information about the different subjects. Fortunately, colleges offer students the opportunity of exploring a variety ...
There has been a number of debates as to whether college students should be given the opportunity to choose their courses. Like any contentious subject, while others are of the opinion that, courses should be chosen for college students, others believe that, students should be given complete freedom to choose the courses they would love to study. When students join college, they are forced to study for subjects they do not want to. Many students complain that they are not allowed to choose subjects they are interested in; rather, they are forced to take compulsory subjects. In addition, students complain that, they are forced to spend their entire years in college doing things they really do not need. This is very wrong because, college students should have more freedom to choose their own courses for several reasons. To start with, students are always interested in studying different subjects, and they love courses they choose to study. Moreover, if students are allowed to study the courses they choose, it will be easy for them to concentrate and work hard so as to excel in this subjects.
Education Week reported in the “Metropolitan Life Survey of the American Teacher 2000” that seventy-one percent of students state their post-high school plans as a four-year college (Eduacation Week, 2000). The fact is seventy-five percent of Americans youth do not graduate from college (Starr, 1998). Due to the inconsistency of the reported statistics a counselor needs to advise each student in the direction that best suits them. This task is difficult considering the large number of students per counselor.
“Some students go to college knowing exactly what they want to do. But most don’t. At Penn State, 80 percent of freshmen — even those who have declared a major — say they are uncertain about their major, and half will change their minds after they declare, sometimes more than once” (Simon). Many students going to college have no idea what they want to become when they grow up. Many change their major and career path during college which proves to become extremely financially damaging. For me, I am pretty sure I know what I want to become in the future and will not end up stuck thinking what I want to become when heading into college in the future. I want to go into the medical field and the two jobs in that field that seems very appealing are
Making decisions is an important part of our everyday life. Decisions define actions and lead to the achievement of goals. However, these depend on the effectiveness of the decision-making process. An effective decision is free from biases, uncertainties, and is deeply dependent on information and critical thinking. Poor decisions lead to the inability to achieve set objectives and could lead to losses, if finance is a factor. Therefore, it is important to contemplate about quality and ways to achieve it in decision-making, which is the focus of this paper. The purpose is to look into the needs of decision-making, including what one should do and what one should not do.
First of all, parents cannot make a decision for their children’s major in higher institution because of the generation gap between them. In our modern era, it can easily be observed that our younger generation is more advance in term of science and technology compared to the older generation. On account of these new science and technology discoveries, a lot of new majors in higher institution have been added which also correspond to the number of new job opportuni...
