I was a little let down by this very engaging book by Dr. Burns. Not because of the plethora of information, research, and insight into youth ministry. Simply, as I had just finished two great books on building youth ministries by Doug Fields Your First two Years in Youth Ministry and Mark DeVries Sustainable Youth Ministry. Both of the above books were published after the eminent work of Dr. Burns. Fields and Devries books I read before Dr. Burns Uncommon Youth Ministry. Do not get me wrong, all three books are very pertinent and applicable in their own way to growing and maintaining a vibrant and health youth ministry. What did pique my interest in Mr. Burns’ book, was how he pointed out three key elements in growing youth ministry. Acceptance, validation, and empowerment of the youth of today.
It is just that I believe Fields and DeVries borrow from the sagely Dr. Burns, which is in a way the greatest compliment you can give to another writer, teacher, or mentor. So a lot of the information I had already read. Mr. Burn’s book is filled with many ways a church can enable a youth m...
To say the least, I felt like a failure and that I had wasted people’s time and money. Reading this chapter helped me realize that it is important to learn through a failure (Fagerstrom 126). Failures happen in ministry often, and the way you respond to the failure is important. Chapter fifteen, “Developing a plan for lifelong learning”, is essential for effective leaders. Per Fagerstrom, there are four areas that need constant attention: skill (competency), wisdom and knowledge (learning and thinking), spiritual formation (godliness), and personal development (focus on the word personally)
Christopher “Alexander Supertramp” McCandless was a dreamer. However, unlike most of us nowadays, Christopher turned his desire for adventure into reality. Similar to Buddha, he gave up his wealth, family, home, and most possessions except the ones he carried before embarking on his journey. He traveled by various methods, mostly on foot, to eventually reach his desired goal in the Alaskan wilderness. Unfortunately, due to various mistakes, Christopher ultimately passed and his body was found in a neglected Fairbank City Transit Bus. His motivation to achieve his goal was based on the many aspects of his life. Chris’s dysfunctional family weighed heavily on him, one prime reason for driving him onto the road of freedom.
“Go to New York City and help those boys.” When Pastor David Wilkerson, founder of Teen Challenge and TImes Square Church, heard that one evening in his home in Pennsylvania, 350 miles from NYC he knew that it was not a random voice in his head. It was the voice of God. Pastor Wilkerson started Teen Challenge, an organization that was made to help teens and young adults with problems. He also started Times Square Church, in New York City. This is why Pastor David Wilkerson should win the Pastor of the Century Award.
My internship, Friends of Youth, is closely connected with Lakeside Milam Recovery Centers and I therefore decided that would be a great place to learn more about incase I needed to refer any of my clients to them. In order to gain more information about Lakeside Milam I spoke with the administrator, Dan Labuda and the director of the inpatient facility in Burien, Mary Fredrickson. Dan provided me information about Lakeside Milam as a whole, while Mary gave me an intake look at inpatient treatment and gave me a tour of Lakeside Milam.
In my paper I will talk about my visit to The Community Church at Murphy's Landing (CCML). I have chosen this particular Church because it is a family church type and my neighbor goes there and she encouraged me to go with her. I went there with my neighbor on April 6, 2014.This church is an appropriate for this assignment because the people there are welcoming me with an open heart and they are willing to help and provide me with information. When I visit the Church’s site I read these words “We know visiting a new church can be intimidating. But, we want to help you to be as comfortable as possible when and if you join us”. The people gather in the church weekly to glorify God in joyful worship. The expressions of worship on CCML take many forms a prayer, a hymn of reverent awe, a guitar ringing with a chorus of praise, or a warm handshake and a welcoming smile. Their weekly services begin at 9:30 each Sunday at church. Also, they have weekly podcast if anyone wants to listen online. They have many types of services for parents, kids and students. People at CCML were so friendly; they gather around me and start welcoming me, one by one. People there introducing themselves to me, one after another and provide me with their contact information and help. Then we start talking about the church services and Christianity in particular. The mission of CCML was knowing, growing and loving. They seek to live out our mission by worshipping together as a local community of believers, growing in spiritual maturity through discipleship, education, and small groups, caring for one another within the context of the larger church body and small groups, and Communicating the love of Christ to our world, both through local outreach and global mis...

Back in my high school, one day out of the month was dedicated to student-led clubs. On these so-called club days, most kids will go to any club just to get out of class. Some exclusive clubs, such as the Chess club, would look down on this. These groups would happily kick some kids, but there was one club happy to see everyone who came: the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The little exposure to Christianity found at this club was all that some kids would get and the moderators of my school’s club knew this. Little by little, this is FCA’s nation-wide goal: to change the world into knowing Jesus Christ. This non-profit organization is responsible for everything from small club meetings in middle schools, high schools, and colleges, to massive summer camps. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’s website lists the group’s mission which is to present the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church to athletes and coaches and all whom they influence (FCA). No matter whether on the court or in a group-led bible study, FCA focuses on this mission.

Although written for church leadership, everyday church members would also benefit from understanding the concepts that Dawn is directing at God-empowered leaders. Ms. Dawn's work is predominantly scholarly, and she cites several other works at great length.... ... middle of paper ... ...
I must say that I learned a lot from this class both through the readings and through class discussion. I really, honestly do not have anything that I starkly disagreed with in either. I found it all to be very valuable information for me and this class was extremely helpful in assisting me to better understand the current paradigm shift the church is going through. There are three take-a-ways in particular that helped me to better understand the post modern shift in the church and my role as a minister in this changing paradigm. The first take-a-way is the understanding that there is a shift occurring towards focusing more on the congregational life of the church with more attention on the laity and its formation. Second, is how to plan, as a church and as pastors, to adjust to this shift towards congregational life and how to be better prepared as a postmodern church to be relevant in this changing time. Lastly, I received a better way of explaining the meaning of what truth is in this post modern time.
The Family Friendly Church by Ben Freudenburg was an interesting book that I was not entirely sure how I would react to it because I had heard mixed reviews on it from different people; in the end, after reading it, I ultimately liked it. The book talked about a lot of truth in family ministry how it is not that important in many churches. Ben talked about how at one of his first church’s, he and his wife, Jennifer, took on the role of parents in the youth group and once they took another call the ministry fell apart because they had made it all about them and not the actual parents (Page 18). I like that Ben admitted this about his past and got me thinking about my home church’s youth ministry which parents were not prioritized to be involved
Overall, this book helped me become more aware of my weaknesses with my preaching style and also gave me tools to strengthen them. The examples are very basic and practical and helped highlight key skills and situations that a preacher can experience when doing a sermon. This book added more knowledge to me and gave me new insights that I can use as a tool when I go back with my ministry as a youth worker.
If you were involved in youth fellowship (YF) then it is very much about social control, we are educating young people on the bible and Christian beliefs and many youth ministry workers don’t leave room for that to be challenged, there is a motive behind it and aims that we want to meet.” (Youth work practitioner one:2014) This made me think about how the values of the youth worker impacts hugely on whether they are agents of social change or control. I know that in YF young people voluntary sign up to learn about Christianity and explore their faith, but I never thought about how some of my colleagues don’t allow young people to ask challenging questions. This in fact prevents young people holding their own opinions and beliefs and the youth worker forces them to conform to a particular way of thinking rather than giving the young people choice.
The foundation is rooted in fellowship, classroom, and weekly Reach Out services for the community. The foundation for the church is community service my pastor has set forth and shared vision of supporting one another through community service this is seen through repeated efforts to support Community functions computer computer community Education Community Resources in partnering and adopting the shared Vision has enabled me to support the growth of toddlers. I have seen children enter into the classroom sometimes shy, unsure or frightened not knowing their surroundings be confort by service. Having had a part in their development throughout a years’ time is rewarding. Taking part in a shared vision by nurturing a child 's education from one year old to two years old is gratifying.Knowing that my time is appreciated and desired includes me in the shared vision the church has for the future of the
Prayer and Bible studies are important in establishing a health ministry. It should start modestly in keeping within the resources of the church. As resources increase the ministry can expand to include other desired functions. The first step is to recognize that no ministry is a solo performance. The information gathering phase needs to include many people
