“Unbroken” Movie Report: Taking place during WWll, Unbroken is a movie about the remarkable journey of Louie Zamperini. Our story begins with a troubled young Louie, caught up in a world of smoking, drinking, and constant brawls. However, fate takes a turn when his brother steps in to guide him toward a new passion – running track. Little did Louie know that this newfound love would keep him out of trouble and propel him to great heights. Louie's dedication and hard work pay off as he becomes exceptionally skilled at running. During a search mission for a downed plane, disaster strikes as their aircraft crashes, leaving only three survivors - Louie, Mac, and Phil. Adrift on a raft for a grueling 47 days, they battle thirst and hunger, surviving on meager supplies and the occasional fish caught with a bird they refused to eat as bait. Hope seems to appear when a plane flies overhead, but their relief quickly turns to terror as it turns out to be a Japanese aircraft, firing upon them. Days pass, and tragedy strikes as Mac succumbs to malnourishment. Shortly after, Louie and Phil are captured by the Japanese and become prisoners of war in Japan. Their time as POWs is marked by immense suffering and brutal punishment. Louie, in particular, becomes a target of "Bird," one of the main leaders among the prisoners. Despite facing constant torment, Louie is presented with an opportunity to secure a better life by speaking against America on a national radio station. However, his unwavering loyalty leads him to refuse, resulting in his return to the POW camp, where his enemy receives a promotion and is transferred elsewhere. This indicates the true end to the war, and all of the men are freed. As for Louie, he returns to his family and the film ends with their embrace. The movie is incredibly faithful to the true events, with only a few minor discrepancies. One notable difference is the portrayal of how Louie and Phil were treated upon their arrival at the camp, which was actually much more humane compared to the movie. Additionally, the movie omitted the part of the story involving a plot to kill the "bird”. “Unbroken” was directed by Angelina Jolie, who is primarily recognized for her acting career, particularly her role in Maleficent. However, she has also been involved in the production of other films. The movie featured a stellar cast including Jack O'Connell, Domhnall Caleeson, Miyavi, and Garrett Hedlund. However, despite the star power, it received a mediocre score of 52% or 6/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics felt that the film failed to capture the full intensity of the story, leaving many disappointed.
