Recommended: A thesis on dehumanization
Unlike the previous cases of dehumanization in the history mentioned, unborn children are mainly dehumanized in today’s society by the lack of understanding of vocabulary, whereas the majority in previous time periods intentionally and strategically used their diction to prove that they are superior. A word involving human development often misinterpreted by society is fetus. Webster’s New Compact Desk Dictionary and Style Guide defines fetus as, “the unborn of young of an animal, esp. in its later stages and specif., in humans, from about the eighth week after conception” (Webster’s Dictionary 2002 180). People often misinterpret fetus as meaning a “clump of cells” a part of a woman’s body, although biologically once a person is conceived …show more content…
Even though unborn children are dependent on their mother, unborn children are just like any other human that exists on Earth because humans are organisms. Discover Biology 5th Edition, written by Anu Singh-Cundy and Michael Cain, defines an organism by its characteristics: “are composed of one or more cells, reproduce using DNA, obtain energy from their environment to support metabolism, sense their environment and respond to it, maintain a constant internal environment (homeostasis), can evolve as groups” (Sing-Cundy Cain 12). Technically unborn children can and have the potential to do every characteristic listed in the 5th Edition of Discovery Biology which would classify them as organisms. Similar to children that have been born and adults who obtain energy from their environment, unborn children obtain energy from their environment which would be considered their mother’s womb. So when the right to abortion is being discussed, the act of terminating a human life should be evaluated, not the termination of a “clump of cells” because when unborn children are not classified as human beings, society continues the vicious cycle of degrading the meaning of …show more content…
The right to abortion is often justified by a majority of people because unborn children are considered unviable due to their inability to survive outside of the womb. A section from Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia titled “Abortion” explains the history of abortion in the United States. This encyclopedia explains during which week of pregnancy a fetus is considered viable, “In 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court held in Roe v. Wade that the right of privacy protected a woman 's right to end an unwanted pregnancy before the fetus has developed the capacity for viability outside the womb—usually construed as 24 weeks after conception” (Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia). When someone is considered unviable by society they are not useful to the general populace or themselves. It would be best for them to be disregarded or disposed of to benefit and help society progress as a whole. Nazism is an example of disposing of “unviable” and “inferior” people for the profit of the majority. An article hosted on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s (USHMM) website titled “Victims of the Nazi Era: Nazi Racial Ideology” states, “The Holocaust…was the premeditated mass murder of millions of innocent civilians. Driven by a racist ideology that regarded Jews as “parasitic vermin” worthy only of eradication, the Nazis implemented genocide on an unprecedented scale” (USHMM). The Nazis took a social
There is no excuse to killing an innocent child and abortion is giving people an excuse. Before a child even has the chance to be born and live, their life is taken away because of the mothers decision. There are so many alternatives to abortion. When a woman doesn’t want to keep her baby or does’t have the ability to take care of it, abortion shouldn 't be the first option taken. There are many options out there to be taken like “Abortion alternative clinics [that] offer services such as adoption referrals, free pregnancy testing, crisis pregnancy counseling, post-abortion counseling, and homes for pregnant women” (Chittom & Newton, 2015). With that many options to choose from, why would a woman choose to take the abortion route? When the abortion is in consideration, many women admitted they were not fully educated on the topic. Chittom and Newton (2015) wrote: “these heart wrenching stories describe the violent reactions these women have had to seeing images similar to what they had done in the process of killing their own babies”. After the abortion process was over, many women were shocked and mortified at how the abortion was preformed. For many, only guilt and sorrow remain since the damage was already done. Flat out plain and simple, abortion is not the right route to take. It kills and innocent baby and puts the mother’s life at risk
How would you feel if someone took away your ability to live and have a future? You wouldn't have the opportunity to crawl, take your first step, have your first kiss, or experience those butterflies in your stomach at the sight of first love. Millions of special moments, a life, shredded to pieces. This is essentially what abortion does. Abortion is not the answer in the case of an unplanned pregnancy and needs to be stopped! First of all, abortion is a type of unnecessary murder that occurs in inhumane ways and cannot be tolerated. Moreover, there are alternatives to abortion and many families who are looking to adopt. Lastly, the side effects of abortion can cause life threatening health risks to the mother. Excuses will always be made, but the bottom line is that abortion is not acceptable and should be stopped.
In order for the pro-life argument to be valid, it must have both a true premise and true conclusion. It falls short of validity by assuming that a fetus up to 22 weeks old is a person, and has its own rights independent of its host, or what we often refer to as its mother. First we must recognize the subtle, yet extremely important distinction between a human being and a person. It is obvious that a fetus is a member of the human ...
While family appears as an unpretentious concept, it rests undefinable; “it’s most basic terms, a family is a group of individuals who share a legal or genetic bond, but for many people, family means much more” (Mayntz, n.d.). With a foundation in this broad definition, half a million children remain without a family, residing in foster care. Although foster care offers temporary households to brokenhearted children, this video destroyed my faith for American society. Rather than provoking the appalling number of children in foster care, Americans disregard the issue, dreading the unforgiving reality of the dehumanization of their children. One remark that utterly traumatized me, stood that it takes one child, to make one accusation, and a
It is fully dependent on its mother 's body, unlike born human beings. Even if a fetus was alive, the ‘right to life’ doesn 't imply a right to use somebody else 's body. (Millstein par. 3). A fetus cannot survive on its own and if the caregiver does not want to bring the “fetus” into the world, then, unfortunately that is their decision. “People have the right to refuse to donate their organs, for example, even if doing so would save somebody else 's life. The "right to life" also doesn 't imply a right to live by threatening somebody else 's life. Bearing children is always a threat the life of the mother.” (Millstein par. 4). In a nutshell, we see the author clearly advocating for women’s rights and discussing whether the fetus is a human life or not. The author strongly believes that the fetus is not a fully functioning organism and should therefore not be given the option of living. That option is solely up to the mother.” Banning abortion violates a woman 's right to control her own body.” (Millstein par. 38). The author believes that when you don’t give a woman the right to choose what’s the best option for them, then that it is violating women’s
Infanticide is not unique to humans. It is practiced by many mammals including some primates. The main difference between human and animal infanticide is that infanticide in humans is performed by the parent(s) of the child while in the case of animals it is usually a male suitor (Caldwell and Caldwell, 2005, p. 208). In pre-modern societies infanticide was done instead of abortions as it allowed for sexual selection, it was much more effective than pre-modern contraception, and it did not require any special skills or esoteric knowledge (Caldwell and Caldwell,2005, p. 205). Infanticide has a history as a method of population control. It is more frequent to throw away girl babies. This may be because of dowries or other cultural reasons. Infanticide seems to occur primarily when it aids one parent, both parents or additional children to survive better or if when the infant has little chance of survival.
In my freshman year of high school, I had taken an ROTC class. My instructor brought up in a discussion on opposing abortion or not. The students in my class disagreed with the right of abortion, while I quietly sat back and listened to their opposing views. They thought of abortion as murder, and considered that there are other alternatives to take other than that route. Later on, I remember my mother and I both agreed to abortion having its reasons to be considerable. That the reality of keeping a child is being able to financially support the baby, house-hold family issues that abide by certain morals by life’s standards, and the mother of the child may still being school, which leads to a stressful environment. Later on the discussion of abortion was brought up again when attending Bowie State in my health class. By watching a video, I learned how more people involved in a group called pro-life opposed abortion because it was looked at as a form of murder. I disagree because the baby isn’t fully born yet, and if aborting a chil...
Admittedly, too many young mothers find themselves in unwanted situations which carry with them very difficult and painful decisions. This we cannot overlook. They deserve our mercy, compassion, and love rather than harsh words and uncharitable judgment. Nonetheless, their difficult plight can never warrant an unwarranted solution; the extermination of their defenseless baby. Eliminating the problem resolves nothing, but instead often triggers a long path of guilt and depression. In a haste to solve the problem, we ignore the long term consequences for both mother and child. Both will inevitably suffer. Ours has become a culture of death for the child..and the mother. One dies physically, the other begins dying spiritually and emotionally. Thus under the banner of freedom we enslave souls. In a thirst for "rights" we respect no one's rights. And in a frenzy to respect a woman's choice, we impede her from making a choice according to the truth which would free her from a false sense of liberty, from the lies of propaganda, convenience, and our me first generation.
According to St. Thomas Aquinas, Catholic priest and philosopher, a fetus is not a human being because it does not possess language or articulated thought - one of the defining aspects of human nature (qtd. in Eco 51). Theoretically speaking, a fetus is not a human until it can think and talk. With that being clarified, the rest of the essay will first include arguments for, and then arguments against, abortion. Karen Pazol, et al.
Many people have their own opinions on abortion, that a fetus is a human being with a right to live so abortion is similar to murder. While other groups argue that a woman has certain rights, especially the choice whether to bring another life into the world. The groups that are for it think that abortion gives women the control over their own bodies, which it is their choice when and whether to have children or giving an option to choose to bring or not to bring a child with abnormalities to the world. Some children are born with severe disorders and some parents, being unable to care for their disabled child seek abortion as their one and only option because taking care of a child, especially born with abnormalities is tough work to do as a parent, so they decide whether bring a life into the world. They look ahead on what is best for them, and it is selfish. Or even having in mind that some do not want to become a single parent taking up two roles; a mother and father and they feel like every child should come into the world feeling wanted, loved and cared for. Another reason some women have an abortion is because they do not want to stop work or schooling, and these reasons are consistent across many countries, including America. Other reasons are because of societal pressures, women get little to no social support. But
With this in mind, I learned that six weeks after conception, the baby's heart starts beating. Certainly, it is an actual child that assembles inside a woman's body. It definitely cannot be an alien or an animal. As far as I know, following the moment it is conceived, it is a child. Realistically, upon being pregnant, the life is called a baby instantaneously the mother to be officially starts preparing for the birth of the child. This could include, purchasing walkers, prams and so fought.
However, does that mean fetuses are just a soulless piece of meat, spending almost a year inside a woman only to achieve sentience at the very late stage of pregnancy, or even upon birth? Does it have the right to live? This has been an issue for many years, as we do not know for sure at which stage of pregnancy the fetus has gained the right to live, we are just clueless about it, and even if we assume it does have the right to life anyway (since we don’t know exactly when), it only makes the matter worse since abortion is taking that right away from the fetus, by the choice of not by itself, but its own parents. One cannot talk about morality without mentioning religions, as they have contributed a huge proportion to what we used to define morality. In Christians and Catholics, abortion is considered a sin, and they were strongly against such an idea, however, they did not go for another Crusade, but rather “encourages people to think through the issue of abortion very carefully and recognises that each individual will have differing views on the subject” (BBC). In Buddhism, traditional Buddhists rejected abortion because it goes against their belief, as life should not be destroyed, while modern
During the Holocaust, six million, seventeen thousand, seven hundred and sixty Jews were killed. In contrast, abortion kills between forty and fifty million babies annually around the world. In both cases, these deaths are justified by saying those murdered are “sub-human”. Also, countries and civilizations were or are divided due to the Holocaust and abortion. They are different because in the case of abortion the killed aren’t discriminated against, but the ones who “ordered”
Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion of a fetus or embryo from the uterus before viability (dictionary.com). Those who disagree with abortion think that this is not right, evil and a form of murder. All of those thoughts are correct: abortion is the act of removing a fetus from the protection of the mother’s uterus. However, is it not the duty of the mother to protect her unborn child? In this day in age, we are still allowing this barbaric method of ending a pregnancy to happen, despite the many alternatives.
Discussing the personhood of a fetus is problematic, partly because there’s no clear distinction between a growing fetus and the person it develops into, but mainly because of difficulties in defining the proper role, or extent of rule, by governments in granting that fetus certain rights as a person. In short, the moment we say whether a fetus is or is not a person, and decide to give—or withhold—rights to life to that fetus as if it were a person, we adopt an approach that bears numerous ethical as well as legal implications which need their due diligent consideration.
