During my junior year of high school, I met a new student who came from Morocco. She didn’t speak English and had a hard time adjusting to a different culture because we were the only ones who wore the hijab. I talked to my counselor about this and I asked if we could be in the same classes until she gets comfortable with this type of environment. Unfortunately, there came a time when a student started harassing her about being Muslim. I could tell that it was affecting her mentally. After seeing this, I decided to make a difference in Horizon High School. Three other students and I created an organization called Umbrella Project. Umbrella Project focuses on discrimination against students at Horizon High School. I believed that I could make
a difference in my community for my generation to positively affect the future as well. Teaching students about not using racial slurs helped the students come closer together. After hearing our speech, teachers were amazed and found it beneficial to the youth. As a result, our work is now a part of the Health curriculum for the Adams 12 district. Now, we get to work with multiple students from different point of views. These students can use their knowledge gained from Umbrella Project to influence others in public. If I was put in this situation again, I would handle this differently by talking to the student being harassed. It is hard to accept your ethnicity if you’re constantly being discriminated against. I have gone through a similar situation. My parents moved to the United States twenty years ago and we face many hardships because of this. It has always been hard for me to accept this because it is hard to adjust to a different environment.
This school has had 5 principals in 4 years. I spoke earlier about this school being a part of the I-zone. The I-zone is a special subset of schools within Shelby County that are given the task of leading a school from the bottom 5% to the top 25%. In that there is a high turnover rate with administrators and teachers. I was selected to be a turnaround principal given a certain amount of time with the authority to make necessary changes. The community asked for a principal they could relate to. They wanted to be involved with the school and wanted resources given back to them so they could help their children. I listen to community concerns and established a parent power committee so they could be partners in education with us. We reached out into the community to garner some wrap around services to help and support our students. We gained seven (7) new Adopters who have formally taken the charge to provide resources that all students will need to achieve academically. Life Church gives us food. Bellview Baptist Church comes in and tutors all our 2nd grade students. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has volunteered to come in and work with our students on STEM projects. We have Omega Psi Phi who comes in an exposes our kids to social and character development. And the list goes on. There just so many programs and organizations ready to work with us because they know

Title VII under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was enacted on July 2nd, 1964 as a mitigation strategy to prohibit any form of discrimination on grounds of a person’s religion, sex, color, race or their national origin. The law was originally meant to solve the problem of discrimination witnessed during voter registration. It was also expected to solve discrimination present at workplaces and schools where there was widespread racial discrimination. However, the law has become an even more relevant tool and has seen to it that hiring and firing processes by many companies are adherent to it.
High school is a time for students to develop new interests, talents, and hobbies. As well as, prepare them with material they need for college or the workforce. Most schools, Sequoyah High School being amongst one of these schools, are lacking the resources that students need in order to pursue these academic interests. Although Sequoyah High School is a great high school for students in Monroe County, there are several issues that still need to change in order to help better the school system as a whole.
The case study titled "School Officials from Marshall Metro High School Attempt to Motivate Students & Teachers to Achieve Higher Performance" is about the different ways the school system used to motivate the students to come to school (Kinicki & Williams, 2013, p.405). Participating in the nationwide school walk out is a good first step, but there is more I would like to do, but where do you start? The quote by Alice Paul, “Those in power should be held responsible not only for what they do, but for what they do not do” can relate to everyone, not just people in power because how can one say they support something, but not do anything about it. Truly, it does seem worse when someone is in a position of power and influence where they could do something, but do nothing because it does not fit the public view or their reputation. If I am ever in the limelight, I would hope that I would do something for those who are oppressed if it be through raising money to help immigrants establish themselves or using my voice to speak
At this time, I became a group leader in an after-school program for a 3rd-grade class. This was my first time working with children and as imagined, it was a tough transition. The students were Latino and African American, living in poverty stricken neighborhoods with a dysfunctional home life. The program focused on students who were at risk of retention. A large number of students were below average and had been recommended to receive extra academic support. As a result of my time spent working and learning with the students, I choose an educational path.

Sci Academy is a coed, charter high school in New Orleans, Louisiana. SA holds classes for pupils in grades 9 through 12. The school enrollment is around 400, and there is a 15:1 student to teacher ratio. The gender mix is evenly divided. Following state assessments, 74 percent of students are proficient in Mathematics and 69 percent are proficient in English. Our book defines affirmative action as a term that refers to programs designed to ensure that women, minorities, and other traditionally disadvantaged groups have full and equal opportunities in employment, education, and other areas of life. I would like the opportunity of being employed with the MPSD because my family consists of three generations of Lincoln High School graduates. Teaching in the district will allow me to build on the family tradition. I had the pleasure of completing my student teaching placements in the MPSD and I felt included and welcomed from the first day. I would truly enjoy an opportunity to work with the MPSD staff again. Kids with disabilities are nice young boys and girls, but they don’t always get the chance to show it. People judge them because of what they have. It could be because they can’t speak right, do a math problem like we can, or they could have a mental handicap. Children with disabilities should be treated the same as everyone else.
According to the U.S Department of Justice, “160,000 kids per day do not attend school for fear of being bullied” (American Society for the Positive Care of Children). Many people are being treated poorly due to prejudice, biases, and the “ideal” looks. To put an end to people being being treated poorly, two key actions are needed to be taken, such as helping people realize their prejudices and biases and standing up for someone who is experiencing inequality.
“How old are you? That’s right, I am the adult and you kids should listen to me! I have the experience and knowledge and you guys don’t!” yelled the coordinator who I collaborated with to plan a beautification day in his high school. This happened during my Junior year in one of my most dedicated extracurricular activities, Community Action for Teens. Along with 3 of my friends who are officers of the youth group and our program site manager and my mentor, we were working on building our capacity with other organizations and local high schools. In particular, we choose to work with one local high school. I was filled with joy to further apply my leadership skills to help out this high school. Even though I did not attend this school, because I got into the Charter program to attend Chamblee High School, the high school was still my home school, so it had all of my childhood friends that I grew up with.
