It's easy to remember back when I was a senior in high school being faced with a decision of where to pursue my college career. It was an enormous and somewhat daunting decision, as I knew from living only in Vermont, I wanted to reach out beyond State boundaries. I attended the University of Rhode Island. My freshman year was filled with amazing experiences and I did well academically, however, it wasn’t the right school for me. I transferred to the University of Vermont with hopes of a greater cohesive atmosphere and learning environment, and for the next three years, I got that and so much more.
Having attended URI and studied abroad for a semester in Australia, I have experienced other universities and formed a sense of comparison. I found UVM provided the best professors, classes, advising, campus environment, opportunities, and holds great professional accreditation. These aspects have been powerful influences during my undergraduate experience at UVM, more specifically, unleashed an unequivocal desire to learn more. I have enjoyed all my undergraduate professors. That being said, I'd like to draw attention to two academic professors who have greatly influenced my desire to learn and stirred my ambitions to continue my education. Professor's Shamila Lekka and Mark Starrett taught amazing courses, were enthusiastic about the subject matter, and incorporated updated and exciting research within the field. Professor Lekka sparked my interest towards the attachment theory and Professor Starrett introduced me to therapeutic horticulture. As I reflect on my college life, I wonder about the choices I have made that have led me to where I am today and that will guide me into shaping who I long to become. The things I have had to sacrifice, the support and experiences I have had with family, friends, strangers and work colleagues. I don’t know what I will be doing three months or thirty years from now but I do know that I want to have new experiences. When I graduated from high school, I knew I didn’t want to be that person that moved back to the same town and stayed there for the rest of my life. I even contemplate leaving the United States in my adult life. Who really knows, maybe those cards are still in the deck. For now, I know my immediate goals include focusing on completing my college education the best I can, and moving away from my comfort zone, broadening my horizons and taken risks.
Imagine the senior year of high school when students are poised to enter college and become adults. It's a time of responsibility, of being on one's own, and of shaping lives by making daily decisions. One of the major decisions is where to attend college. Should a person stay close to home and attend an in-state school where people and even campuses are somewhat familiar? Or should the decision be to start a completely new chapter in one's life by attending a college farther away, with totally new challenges? I believe the answer is definitely to leave town.
After being on the road for three years, I decided to check into returning to college at the University of Delaware and the University of Pennsylvania. Both universities informed me that I would have to retake my first two years that I had completed at Chattanooga State. I would have to commit for another four to six years of college. I did not have the time to do this. I wanted to be finished with my bachelor?s degree within two years if possible. So, later, when they realize that their choices are limited, their futures sealed or semi-gelled, they decide that school is where they need to be (Smith, 2001).
So after graduation I decided to explore my options at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh. Wow, was this a mistake? Not only was the college to big for my own well being, but the big university provided too many distractions. This is why I feel I have finally taken the right and first step. in securing my future.
I have been tirelessly searching for the best university for me for a while now. One with superb facilities, and a beautiful campus. One that offers me top education, a conducive environment for learning, and a memorable experience. A university that helps me develop both spiritually and intellectually. A university that allows me to find myself, not just in the classroom, but also outside the classroom.
Before starting the Fall 2016 semester, I wasn’t sure about what I had wanted to do with my life, unsure of where I would start and most of all how I would to the point I wanted to be in a couple of years. And finally from a whole month of contemplating, I decided to go to a Community College.
Headed off to college, I thought I knew what I wanted. I thought the school I chose would be the school I would find my major in, a niche with best friends, and the four year experience I would fall in love with. I had experienced the motivating campus lifestyle while visiting friends and relatives. This has been an inspiration for me to carve out my educational path to lead to Rutgers University. Attending the University of North Georgia as a freshman has given me the incentive to use the independence I am given to be more than a better student, but allow myself to be a leader and a role model who advocates the benefits of going to college. As the end of my senior year in high school approached, I had to make an important decision. What school was I going to spend the next few years of my life at? When the financial aid packages arrived, I was torn between two colleges. After sitting down with my mother and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both schools, I came to my final decision. It seemed like a year ago I was imagining what college life would be like and suddenly before my eyes, I would be a college student in a matter of four months.
As a young woman growing up in an urbanized setting and attending public schools all of my life, when the time came to start planning and searching for colleges, I searched for schools that I felt fit my persona, that I would be comfortable attending for some of the most integral years of my life. My search included schools such as Temple University, and Pennsylvania State University, higher education institutions that allowed me to challenge myself, but at the same time would put me in a setting where I would be with others just like myself, fitting into the standard American university fashion.
I must confess that I never intended to attend a community college. Whenever my mother suggested the idea of my living at home and commuting to Ivy Tech, I wrinkled my nose at her and said that I wanted to go to a four-year university. Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. At the start of my undergraduate education, I was taken aback by what I had ahead of me. Now finally out of high school, a bevy of opportunities suddenly sprang themselves upon me. I was faced with the questions of what classes to take, what to study, what to participate in, how to fend for myself, how to accomplish my goals, and countless others. After struggling with these monumental questions, I realized that, in fact, nothing had changed. I was still the same person I had always been, only now presented with much more opportunity and room to grow.
