On February 2016, I attended UC World Fest at the University of Charleston main campus. The UC World Fest is a celebration of diversity and culture that is held annually at the University of Charleston. During this event, students of different cultures would showcase their talents, customs, and attire to represent their country of origin. The students had made custom exhibits to express their cultures along with a talent and fashion show to demonstrate the different aspects of each other’s culture. My role at this celebration was to observe and appreciate the unique perspective that different cultures can offer. Also, I interacted with the students by inquiring about their culture and their favorite aspects of culture. This event has increased my awareness of the perspective each culture can offer. I can apply this knowledge in my pharmacy practice by acknowledging the unique perspectives of my patients as attributes of their culture. This will help me become more welcoming of people from different backgrounds. When working with patients in the pharmacy setting, I must be attentive to my patient’s diverse background and accommodate cultural customs and traits to avert misunderstanding and conflict. To do this, I would have to communicate to the patient my acknowledgment of their cultural differences and express the ways in which I can accommodate their needs. Cultural competency is a very significant necessity in health care today and the lack of it in leadership and in the health workforce, is quite pressing. The lack of cultural competency can bring about dire consequences such as racial and ethnic disparities in health care. For my Cultural Plunge, I participated with Project Excell (Extending College Education for Lifelong Learning). This is a group that meets on campus, in the union, every Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 AM. Each participant has a developmental disability and they come from various places around Manhattan. Project Excell offers around 4 different classes for the participants to choose from, which range from dancing/theatre to the history of Nigeria. After completing a “session,” the participants go through a graduation ceremony and then begin a different type of class for the next few weeks. I joined this group as a student ambassador, who assists the classroom teachers while building relationships with and tending to the needs of the participants.

Going to a different country or area of the world can open up anybody’s eyes to see that culture makes a huge impact on the understanding and practices of healthcare that seem to be so common to other areas of the world. Cultural Competence is important for many reasons. First, it can help develop culturally sensitive practices which can in turn help reduce barriers that affect treatment in health care settings. In conclusion, dental professionals need to recognise, understand, address and respect the issues that may arise within the diverse range of patients that they encounter. Being aware of the nature of the diversity of patients will help manage trans-cultural issues that may arise during the utilization of dental services and better accommodate individual patient needs and concerns while reducing health inequalities (CQC. 2010).
