UC World Fest Reflection

On February 2016, I attended UC World Fest at the University of Charleston main campus. The UC World Fest is a celebration of diversity and culture that is held annually at the University of Charleston. During this event, students of different cultures would showcase their talents, customs, and attire to represent their country of origin. The students had made custom exhibits to express their cultures along with a talent and fashion show to demonstrate the different aspects of each other’s culture. My role at this celebration was to observe and appreciate the unique perspective that different cultures can offer. Also, I interacted with the students by inquiring about their culture and their favorite aspects of culture. This event has increased my awareness of the perspective each culture can offer. I can apply this knowledge in my pharmacy practice by acknowledging the unique perspectives of my patients as attributes of their culture. This will help me become more welcoming of people from different backgrounds. When working with patients in the pharmacy setting, I must be attentive to my patient’s diverse background and accommodate cultural customs and traits to avert misunderstanding and conflict. To do this, I would have to communicate to the patient my acknowledgment of their cultural differences and express the ways in which I can accommodate their needs. In recognition of my cultural differences, I have an understanding of how different things and be and therefore I can empathize with patients of diverse backgrounds.
