Today’s society is full of products that have numerous varieties. But, little do customers know about the time before when there was one type of each product. In Malcolm Gladwell’s “Ketchup Conundrum” article, he offers many different situations providing an explanation on how some products came to be, and how some name brands made their way into the business world. Consumers are lucky today that there is almost any variety of product to fit their wants or needs.
The fast food restaurant industry, which includes quick-service and fast-casual restaurants, is highly segmented with the top 50 companies accounting for only 25% of the industry’s sales. The $120 billion industry includes over 200,000 restaurants with 50% of those specializing in hamburger entrees. (hoovers.com 2008) The major competitors in the industry include McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Subway, and KFC – Chick-fil-A’s major competitor in chicken sales. Chick-fil-A’s unique position in the market, specializing in chicken-based entrées, has lead to a competitive advantage which the company has been able to capitalize on. Recently, many competitors have added chicken entrees in order to compete in the market segment. Through marketing strategies and company initiatives, Chick-fil-A has tried to stay distant from competitors, offering a fresh alternative to the ordinary fast food restaurant.
Marketing is not just about selling and advertising products and services. If the bar is located in an area where the average age is 60, it will be safe to assume that the business will have difficulties finding many customers. Similarly, the business will not be able to survive if it is located in an area that has a lot of Mormon or Muslim residents as drinking alcoholic beverages is prohibited by these religious practices. Recently I watched a T.V. show called The Profit and recognized some similarities from the current Marketing chapter discussed in class. The current episode was about a company called Bentley’s Corner Barkery, which is committed in providing all-natural pet food and treats for their customers. The episode highlighted how Bentley’s Corner Barkery was struggling and not reaching all of their potential customer base because of its marketing structure among other poor managing and financial elements. Before Marcus Lemonis (he is the investor) the company marketing strategy was the quality of product will attract customers. Marcus Lemonis immediately ask for the company’s mission statement and help the owners identify their target customers by segmentation.
We have come to the phase that allows Team A to apply the research tools and implement a market research plan. Team A will review various marketing research tools that are available for researchers to use such as secondary research, secondary on-line research, exploratory research, nondirective interviews, and the Likert scale. Our secondary research is showing that consumers are demanding healthier menu options. This market research implementation plan will develop several market research tools; including questionnaires’ and the Likert scale to verify if McDonald’s consumers genuinely want and will purchase healthier menu items.
