Dear Mrs. O'Brien, during the third quarter, I read Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm. This book is about the main character, Turtle, being sent away for the summer to live with her cousins, whom she has never met. Initially, she highly disliked it since it was warm, hot, and loud in the beach apartment. She gets to know her cousins and goes on adventures in the sea as well. She met many new people, including her grandma, who she was told was dead but is still alive. I would rate this book a 10/10 for the plot, character development, writing, and perfectly fitting setting and details. She meets with her and takes care of her, and although her grandmother never talks to or dislikes her, she persists in cooking the food. On the next day, she visits, and the grandmother and Turtle have a small conversation about Shirley Temple and how much Turtle dislikes her. She agrees and says, “Me too” (112). “Shirly Temple is a young girl who was supposed to “heLP” America out of the Great Depression,” says Turtle later on. They later bond over their dislike of Shirley Temple. This small conversation is the initial opening up with her grandmother and allows later on in the story for Turtle Mother and Grandmother to make amends. This displays character development for the three of them in unique ways; Mama initially wanted to ignore that her grandmother was alive and despised the thought of visiting her. However, as Turtle and her open up to each other, she opens up to her and makes amends after such a long time. Turtle initially was really shocked she was alive and wanted to get to know her better to get more information on Mama. However, as time progressed, she was more focused on having fun chats with her rather than finding hidden answers. Lastly, we can see the development of the
