The Turner Thesis in the Modern United States

Despite being written over one hundred years ago, Frederick Jackson Turner’s Frontier Thesis is still valid to this very day. Turner developed his Frontier Thesis as a means to determine where distinctly American characteristics developed. Turner stated that it was the Western settlers who developed a unique identity as they adapted and tamed the Frontier. Consequently, Turner saw this process as an evolution of a distinctly American culture – people who were not afraid to venture westward in order to exploit resources. As these people relocated westward in search of resources, more settlements developed in the West. While the physical Frontier is no longer present in today’s America, one simply has to reinterpret the Frontier as a virtual space with economic opportunities with limited government influence. As a result of this reinterpretation, it is obvious that a new Frontier has developed – cyberspace.
While the physical Frontier, or the unsettled West, is no longer in existence today, a new Frontier has emerged – cyberspace. Turner’s Thesis defined the Frontier as a space of freedom, individualism, and endless opportunity for those who were willing to venture and exploit the existing resources. This same definition can be used to define cyberspace. The Frontier, originally, was seen as a new place to be settled and exploit resources with minimal intervention from the American government. Cyberspace can be seen as comparable to the Frontier. Today’s cyberspace is a place of limited government with boundless opportunity waiting to be exploited. ...Thesis in 1893, the process of the Frontier is still a predominant force in American culture. The Frontier Thesis is less about settling the West than it is about Americans adapting to their environment in order to capitalize on resources. Because of this, the new Frontier lies in cyberspace. In cyberspace, Americans are changing their skills and personality traits in order to capitalize and utilize available resources for personal benefit. This process not only defined how the Frontier became civilized, but it also explained the development of the characteristics of the ideal American. In a response to their savage environment, settlers developed certain characteristics that are distinctly American. Because of this, the process of the West can be seen as a social evolution which helped to advance traits that are uniquely American – even in contemporary America.
