Tsar Nicholas II was the last tsar of Russia. He was born in Pushkin, Saint Petersburg, Russia on May 6, 1868 and would live to reach the age of 50. His actions during his rule could be credited to the rise of communism in Russia, and opposition of him led to his forced abdication in 1917. Because of his significance during his reign, Nicholas is also represented in the novel Animal Farm by a farmer named Mr. Jones, as this character symbolizes Nicholas’s non qualification for ruling, as well as how he plunged his country into devastating poverty and eventually fell out of rule.
Firstly, Nicholas II was known for being unfit to rule. He, “. . . had very little experience of government,” (BBC 1) and, “. . . did not visit factories or villages, or go on tours,” (History Help 1). Even he himself knew he was unsuitable for the job, as he said, “I am not yet ready to be Tsar. I know nothing of the business of ruling.” Even with extensive education, he was not a born leader like everyone expected him to be. Jones were taken out of power. As for Nicholas, he, “. . . [was] forced to abdicate the throne by the Petrograd insurgents, and a provincial government [was] installed in his place,” (History.com staff 1). Following his abdication, the Bolsheviks took over, and thus was the beginning of Communism. The animals of Animal Farm, after similar discontent of the peasants of Russia, overthrew Mr. Jones to establish “Animalism”, as they, “. . . chased Jones and his men out on the road and slammed the five-barred gate behind them,” (Orwell 14). The animals believed in equality for all and did not appreciate how they were treated under the “rule” of Mr. Jones, which can be compared to how Russia was unsatiated with Nicholas as their tsar and why Communism was set
