Trust No One

A wise man once said, “Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer.” If only Fortunato knew that he was more of an enemy than a friend, then he wouldn’t have fallen for Montresor trap. I guess you can’t blame Fortunato for believing in Montresor because they consider one another as friend. However, according to Montresor, Fortunato has step on his foot way too many times. In person, Montresor doesn’t show his true feeling to Fortunato because I think he’s the silent but deadly kind of dude. As reader, we found out that not only did Montresor want vengeance; he wanted to inflict as much pain as possible to Fortunato. Putting trust into a person can be hard to do; Personally, I think people should take everything into consideration before saying “I trust you.” The three main topics that I found interesting in the “The Cask of Amontillado” are the value of trust, the weakness of Fortunato, and the irony of the situation.
According to dictionary.com, trust is defined as reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing. Montresor, as I previously mentioned, doesn’t show his hatred toward Fortunato actions. We know that Montresor is untrustworthy because he told the audience the truth about his feelings toward Fortunato. A symbolic picture that can describe the relationship of Fortunato and Montresor is the coat of arms that the Montresors’ stands by. The coat of arms is a giant golden is a gigantic gold foot, smashing a snake in the blue grass. The snake’s fangs are stuck in the heel of the foot. There was no background information on what Fortunato did to the narrator, but whatever it’s, it seem to have broken the last straw in their ...

...ly, I find it amusing how Montresor tell us audience this story 50 years later and at this moment he doesn’t sound like he was pleased with his decision making.
Overall, the story presents to us a situation where one man was so blind of the obvious and it caused him his life. Of course you wouldn’t consider one of your friends to end up killing you, but if your friend motto is “You can’t mess with me and get away with it”, then maybe you shouldn’t mess with them at all. There are friends whom would laugh at all your jokes and then there’re those whom get offensive if you cross the line; therefore, watch what you say at all time. Don’t shows people your weaknesses because that will be the other person advantages. Just because you trust a person doesn’t mean you reveal everything to them. At the end of the day, “Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer.”
